Nascar drug list should be public -- merged with other thread

I'm not a chemist nor did I stay at a Holliday Inn but I do know that certain chemicals that are basically safe when used for their intended purpose turn into something else when combined with other stuff. With the hundreds, if not thousands, of OTC medications availible who knows what you'll end up with if taken with prescription meds.
Cold pills, starting fluid, anti-freeze and some other things are ingredients in making chrystal meth. (Law & Order, dunk, dunk)

OK, personally, I think we've beat this horse into a pulp.

Until one or the other comes out and says what the substance was, we're all just guessing. Let's leave it until official word becomes available.

Mayfield allowed to drive after positive result: A day after learning #41-Jeremy Mayfield failed a drug test for something other than a performance-enhancer, NASCAR allowed him to drive a race car at Darlington Raceway at speeds up to 173 mph. A person familiar with the test results told The Associated Press on Thursday that Mayfield's positive test was not for a performance-enhancing drug. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because NASCAR won't reveal what banned substance was found in the random test, which ultimately resulted in Mayfield's indefinite suspension. Because Mayfield challenged the initial positive finding, as allowed under NASCAR's drug policy, the series did not take disciplinary action until his backup "B" sample also tested positive. That's why Mayfield wasn't barred from participating in two practice sessions and a qualifying session May 8 at Darlington. See the full Associated Press article at ESPN.com.(5-14-2009)

Black Confirms Claritan Is A tested Sub.

Black said Claritin D is among the substances tested for, but he would not confirm whether that was drug Mayfield used.

"I will say we have a threshold from something like Claritin D, so it's a drug of concern," Black said. "It could be that if an individual used Claritin D to excess that would be reason for action."

Guess who is one of Carl Edwards? That's right Claritan and Carl says "When I'm driving at 180 miles per hour, I can't risk taking a medicine that makes me drowsy. That's why I only use non-drowsy CLARITIN to treat my worst allergy symptoms,"

I guess Jeremy must have took Carl's advice.

I heard it was Claritin D 24 hour on one of the Nascar shows. It contains ephedra which is a banned substance.

What is the most important information I should know about des Claritin-D 24 Hour (loratadine and pseudoephedrine)?

Always ask a doctor before giving a cold or allergy medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough and cold medicines in very young children. Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, allergy, or sleep medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of a certain drug. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains an antihistamine or decongestant. Do not use a cough or cold medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take cough or cold medicine before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body. Desloratadine and pseudoephedrine can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of this medication.

NASCAR already said they will not reveal what the banned substance was.
And...yes, we have a pulpy horse here.

I read an article where Ryan Newman was quoted as saying he WANTS a COMPLETE list of substances and if any other driver doesn't want one, they really don't care. I think it's rather ironic that one of their sponsors who has a driver saying he'll only take Claritin so he can stay alert, is one of the substances on their list. While other brands of medication changed their formulations to exclude the ephedra, Claritin was one who didn't and that's why you have to ask for it behind the pharmacy counter.

Something else which puzzled us is, we only purchase the allergy meds which are not behind the counter and our daughter tested positive for amphetamines and we KNOW she didn't take anything but Benedryl. Things are not always as simple as they seem obviously.

I believe if you look at the date on that article it is before Friday when NASCAR / Brian F talked with all the drivers.

This morning on Wind Tunnel Ryan said while it wasn't a perfect system he feels much better about it now that he realizes you're not just automatically suspended that you are given multiple opportunity to clarify what you're using.

It is also my understanding that if you need and use something like Claritan D that is okay as long as you let the testing lab know. BUT they can tell how much is in your system and if you exceed (double, triple or more) recommended or prescribed dosages it is considered abusing the drug and you will fail the test.

Every persons system is different. I'm a firm believer in Dristan but I take 2 every couple of hours not every 4 or 6 hours as directed. If I do 2 every couple of hours I can function with the cold/flu, 2 every 4 or 6 don't do squat. My wife takes 2 a day and it knocks her flat.

Same with aspirin/acetowhatever, 2 don't do squat. I have a high tolerance for pain medications, especially when adrenalin kicks in, normal dosages do nothing.

There is no one perfect dose for everyone. Nor will everyones system assimilate the drugs in an exact manner.

I have a high tolerence for pain, low tolerance for medicine. Two tylenol put me out cold. :)
