NASCAR testing ways to open restrictor plates

Now this is not reported anywhere as part of yesterday's testing at Daytona. There's an article posted in the testing thread about that and another at NOL.

Keep in mind that this is from Mulhern, whose musings I dose liberally with salt.:)

NASCAR has been testing a new roof-deflector system that could allow NASCAR to increase speeds at Daytona and Talladega significantly for the coming races. Drivers have said that speeds are too slow at those two tracks.

NASCAR's advances have been made in the system that deploys roof flaps to slow the race car and keep it on the ground when it gets turned around in a crash. NASCAR has been wind-tunnel testing cars with a third roof flap that springs up as an air foil to increase the take-off speed by 15 mph.

Speeds at Daytona and Talladega are around 185 mph now. So the addition of the new flap, expected for next spring's Daytona 500, could allow NASCAR to open restrictor plates and let drivers run as fast as 200 mph. NASCAR might also order teams to add a fourth air flap, on the rear deck.
 
Ways to open a restrictor plate:

1. A drill...works wonders
2. A can opener
3. A hand grenade
4. A sledge hammer
5. A cutting torch
6. A hack saw
7. A file (if you have some time to kill)
8. A hammer and punch
9. Tin snips
10. A .12 guage
 
TnWard,How about just using it as a fressbee,And give it a good toss?:D Man with all those flaps,the car is gonna look like that wack-a-mole game at the county fair if it has a wreack. :p
 
Why doesn't WC just use a smaller carburetor for the big tracks, like that of the BGN cars? It would seem to be an obvious solution.

Good point strides, and what about heavier cars, smaller engines, or even all new and different rules for Daytona and Dega????
 
Heavier cars would actually be a plausible solution. If the engines have more weight to pull, the speeds wouldn't be as high, and then they could take off the plates, smash them with a 9-iron, and bury them in a shallow grave.

Or what about thinner tires? Make the tires about an inch thinner, and then the cars would be forced to lift and run a slower corner speed. Then the plates could go bye-bye.
 
Stridsberry: I have been asking for that over a year now.
Drivers would have to lift going in and accellerate coming out.
Would spread out the cars and also show some performace.
 
How about they take the damn things off and let the drivers run with what they bring like in the older days!!
