Nationwide Insurance will exit its title sponsorship of NASCAR's secondary series following the '14 season, but the company plans to increase its spending in the sport by sponsoring a Sprint Cup team, buying media, cutting track deals and maintaining its position as NASCAR's official insurer. Nationwide is in the sixth year of a seven-year series title sponsorship. The title rights and media package cost approximately $8M a year.

Nationwide CMO said that NASCAR's new TV deals with Fox and NBC, which will shift the Nationwide Series from the more-widely distributed ESPN to FS1 and NBCSN, did not affect the company's decision.

Why is it when someone of that position says something like that, I tend to believe that they are lying. I'm just sayin.

Wow, that's pretty big news. Interesting to see that they say that they are actually spending more to do what they have planed then what they currently spend to sponsor the series itself.
They've been sponsoring Stenhouse a lot recently, I wonder if they're going full-time (or close to it) with him. I really don't know how much that would cost though. Maybe they'll be sponsoring some races too.

That could be it.

Maybe they are also going to buy naming rights to a track too?

Heck, Stenhouse could be driving the Nationwide Ford in the Nationwide 400 @ the Nationwide speedway in Richmond. Who knows?

Now will their rates for insurance go down now that they won't be lining brains pockets? Just askin'.

I think it has changed the landscape, can't say for sure yet, this is the first big time sponsor making a change, but it sure looks like it. Removing Speed network and moving nascar programs especially N'wide and the trucks to FS2, and eliminating many news and pre and post race programs, practice and qualifying, Nationwide lost air time where their name is mentioned many times over the course of a day every day. They lost the ability to target their fan base. Didn't take the bean counters long to see that they weren't getting their moneys worth. Might start a landslide, Camping World, might want to quit or re negotiate, Bass Pro, along with a Can of Sonoco race fuel, and 4 fresh Goodyear tires. Bottom line, loosing our speed channel is not going to help our Nascar or motor racing.

I think it may be as simple as they think their sponsorship in a lower tier has run its course and they want to play in the big leagues for a while.

Hmmmmm... Im more wondering who's gona step up? Geico?

Update from Jayski:

NASCAR and Nationwide Insurance have finalized a new agreement to extend Nationwide's position as the official auto, home, life and business insurance partner of NASCAR through 2017. As part of the new contract, Nationwide Insurance also will become the presenting sponsor of the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award. The insurer, in its sixth year of a seven-year agreement as title sponsor of the NASCAR Nationwide Series, will pivot from its series entitlement sponsorship and focus its NASCAR marketing programs on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning in 2015.

...

Nationwide Insurance also will sponsor the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award. The NASCAR Foundation presents the award to a NASCAR fan who embodies the ideals of charity and community that Mrs. France has championed throughout her life. Nominees for the award honor the spirit of NASCAR, demonstrating goodwill and generosity in the interest of helping children in need. One winner receives a $100,000 donation to direct to the children's charity of their choice along with a NASCAR experience of a lifetime. The top three remaining finalists receive $25,000 to direct to their children's charity of choice.

"We approached NASCAR about sponsoring the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award because it embodies the spirit and culture of giving that Nationwide Insurance values", added Jauchius. "The Nationwide Childrens Hospital 200 race is a good example of the collaboration among sponsors, teams and the NASCAR Foundation pulling together to shine the national spotlight on a deserving organization. We look forward to working with Betty Jane and the Foundation to highlight other unique charitable efforts that NASCAR fans support all across the country."

Why would any sponsor do that? That guarantees fewer viewers.
That seems to be a main grip about the current Series. Personally, I like the Cup drivers to be there but I feel like I am in the minority. As far as viewers goes, I guess this weekend will tell the tale as there are no Cup drivers in the field. Are you not watching this week because of that?

I'm less excited about the future title name, and more excited to hear the talking heads screw the name up.

That is going to be a big change, who will do it for 8 mil a year? cough.. Manard or Bass Pro are a couple of big dogs

I don't know but whatever it is its gona sound weird lol. Just as Im sure Nationwide series did to those of u who were around for Busch. Or how Sprint Cup after Nextel and Nextel after Winston.. maybe they should go back to cigarettes .. those guys are billionaires lol.. the NASCAR DuMaurier series

The series was sponsored by a booze company and then an insurance company. Maybe it's time for a law firm to step up and pay the big money.

The new name could be screwem, porkem and stickem series.

How about the Bush series sponsored by Hooters? :D

Better hope it isn't Arron's or Napa. We would be seeing a lot more of Mikey and his name is mud right now around here

They help the series, then help themselves to the cash and trophy. I would love to see all cup affiliated teams get one less set of tires when a cup driver jumps in the car.

In conversation I still call it the Busch series. Although I've learned to just say "Cup Series" instead of being wrong :D How does the "Shell Pennzoil Cup Series" sound to you

LOL What do u think? I mean they might as well just do that... its gona be the most well known car soon enough.. might as well put the brand everywhere :p

"Nationwide is on your side" jingle becomes "Nationwide is in the rear" until Ricky gets going.

I wish they had a title name for the series and it was sponsored by " blank" At least with the Cup Series, they've been mindful to make sure that it was called the blank Cup series since Winston decided to sponsor the series.

Not in my eyes, heck I probably have more respect for him now then I did before... because he had the cojones to stand up for his team manager that actually made the split second wrong decision.

he doesn't bother me either, neither does his brother D.W. who I think is the most knowledgeable announcer they have out there, love it when he is covering practice and qualifying and Micheal is good behind the mike. They get criticized about their love for Nascar..duh

There are very few announcers that doesn't get under a fans skin if they announce long enough. Plus some fans just love to criticize.

I can't really blame Nationwide for doing this. NW is by far the least entertaining of the three major series. Maybe Sprint can pony up a few extra $ so we can call it what it really is: Sprint Cup Lite.

not to me, their road racing races have been some of the best races all year, and got the most comments in the threads for single races. Their points race right now is a toss up and going down to the wire so far. Lots of young and up an comers in the series.

Bush series was from 82 until 07, man that was along time. Looks like only 7 for Nationwide. Who's next, I bet they don't get as much money, now that TV coverage has all but disappeared.
