NEWS: Stewart granted release from Gibbs; going to Haas

I thought it was interesting that Stewart said Chevy had no financial influence in the decision to leave Gibbs and buy into a team.

maybe chevy doesnt want to be tied openly to getting a former chevy driver back into a chevy. We all joked about it in the winter that tony would not be driving a toyota very long, and here we are. With as big of a bow tie as he had on the dlm at the prelude i wondered if something wasnt up. Of course many people thought it ment something as well.

ESPN2 replayed the interview Marty Smith did with Stewart yesterday. He said there Chevy approached him in December about staying with them, hence the late fall rumors of him going to RCR.

He then follows that by saying he's an all-American guy raised in a small town in Indiana and those are the types of things that mean something to him. Reading between the lines, he didn't like the fact of driving for Toyota and started listening to offers.

Move ahead to the start of this season and he has the longer, sloppy looking hair. I always wondered all along what that was about. Looking back now, it's almost like it was a protest of sorts. He cuts it for the Texas race and rumors broke right after that he was looking at options other than Gibbs.

It's obvious for whatever reason that Stewart did not want to drive for Toyota. I guess he's like many others that sees them as a non-American company. He didn't want to go to RCR and be the #3 driver there in the pecking order, didn't want to go to HMS and be #4, or go to DEI and their sinking ship. So here comes the Haas offer via Chevy and he takes it.

I've been a fan of Stewart's since before JGR signed him. I don't pretend to know him, I have met him one time for about 20 seconds. But in seeing what's taken place the last few days, seeing who things have happened this season, and the rumors of the fall of '07, it's pretty obvious to see how all this played out from someone who's followed his career.

My guess is whether this venture is a success or not, he'll drive 5-7 more years, retire or race part time, and spend the rest of his time running his other ventures and mixing in a little DLM or sprint and midget car action.

Good luck Tony. I'm ready for the new gear. Now I have to figure what to do about all this orange 20 stuff. :D

Good for Tony.. I think its a great move for him and even though he already owns several race cars I think that driving what he owns will give him the momentum to get back to being the old Tony and race like he use to.. ALL OUT!!!!! But yeah its a bummer about all the #20 stuff.. think i can sell it on ebay?????.lol

LOL TONS and TONS of #20 stuff, probably more than ebay can handle. At least I don't have a room painted orange and black like some people I know. ;)

Ok, as much as I think of Terry Labonte, I never painted my kitchen yellow or placed a rooster on my walls.

Why get rid of the 20 gear? I've still got and still wear some Budweiser gear...and it wasn't Jr's stuff, but the #11 Bill Elliott stuff. I bought some of that stuff at the shops in Engle Hollow years ago.

I'm not getting rid of mine. ;) I just know people who have whole ROOMS FULL of 20 gear and I think they're going to want to make room for the new stuff. :)

Just what the hell am I supposed to do with this #20 tattoo?

Dale Jr took those into consideration when choosing his number. Maybe Tony will.:D
Sorry Tony, unlike in dirt cars, no you can't have 2 cars of the same number. nor can you append a letter to differentiate numbers. Nor use a 3 digit number.

The 2 is already taken, 0 is avaliable i think, make 80 out of 20 would be feaasible but fun, 70 would be cutting it..

hmm.

Maybe next time Dave you should think about tattooing the drivers name... they never change that. :)

Gibbs Focusing on Logano to Replace Stewart: Top management of Joe Gibbs Racing wouldn't come out and say on Saturday that Joey Logano will replace Tony Stewart in the Sprint Cup series next season, but they didn't say anything to indicate otherwise. Team owner Joe Gibbs and president J.D. Gibbs both agreed Logano will play a huge part in the organization going forward. They oozed with compliments for the 18-year-old phenom, who won his third Nationwide Series start and has three top 10s in four events. They talked about his maturity. They reminded that Stewart, who announced on Thursday he will leave the organization after this season to become the driver/owner at Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009, didn't have a win when he partnered with Home Depot in 1999. "We're going to look at everything out there before we make a decision," J.D. Gibbs said before the Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway. "Generally, guys that are really gifted and real good show it right away. We've had a lot of drivers at JGR. All the good ones have popped right away. He has that."(ESPN.com)(7-13-2008)

Not getting rid of mine either. I need to pick up a car from this year since it will be the last one of him in the #20.

OK, now all these Tony fans seem to be "coming out of the closet." LOL I didn't see a lot of support for him with the exception of one poster who's taking care of babies these days. It's nice to know there's other Smoke fans here besides me. :D

Ill keep some things of Tony things depending on who takes over the 20 car.... I kept all my M&Ms things from Sadler now look whos running with M&Ms.. I tell eveyone its cuz i love the candy :)
