This is the weekly pick'em contest I mentioned starting. There will be a winner each week and season-long standings with a championship that proceeds through the playoffs. The structure of the playoffs will be determined after a couple weeks when I know how many regular players there will be. Please everyone feel free to participate for fun at any time. If you miss a game or a week, you can keep playing. The weekly and season standings will be ranked solely based on number of games picked correctly (wins). Failing to enter a pick for a game is effectively the same as picking a game incorrectly.

The deadline for entering a pick for each game is the published kickoff time. That means that if you miss the early games, you can still pick later games before they start. However, I would strongly prefer that when picks are posted for the week, they are all contained within a single post. If you post your picks and then wish to make changes later, make a new post specifying that you've edited your picks, listing all picks again (changed and unchanged).

The next post below will be the Week 1 schedule to make it easily quotable. You can make your pick by underlining, bolding, or by removing the team you aren't picking. Examples:

Dallas at Tampa Bay
Pittsburgh at Buffalo

or

Dallas at Tampa Bay
Pittsburgh at Buffalo

or

Dallas
Buffalo

Each week there will be a tie-breaker question. For Week 1 the question is "Which team will score the most points this week (and number of points they will score)?" To resolve ties in weekly results, whoever is closest to correct regarding the question wins the tie-breaker. If two players have the same answer or are equally close, the player who made their pick earliest wins the tie-break. Anyone who answers a tie-breaker question exactly correct will be credited with a bonus win.

Please let me know if there are any questions.

I still don't know anything about [American]Football but I thought I'd give it a try....
I'm not playing this year because racing season isn't over yet, but as a bona fide expert I'll gladly give you some free tips...

1. Washington FT always, because I grew up there. There's no NFL team where YOU grew up, so you might as well use mine.

2. Kansas City always, unless they play Washington. Because Andy Reid is pure class, the entire organization is pure class, and Patrick Mahomes is pure excitement... and class.

3. Whoever plays against Dallas Cowboys, always, always, always. This is the ABC Rule... Anyone But Cowboys. Because... refer to rule #1.

4. If you pick the Baltimore Ravens, they will break your heart. It's what you get for betting on a team named after a poem written by some Baltimore dude named Edgar something something. Don't pick teams named after poems unless it's cricket, badminton, or synchronized swimming.

5. (New York) Jets seems like a good team name, conjuring up speed and force... you know, manly stuff. But rumor has it the Jets were named after a group of Puerto Rican ballet dancers from a Broadway musical... West Side Story. The rumor is uncomfirmed, but man, why take a chance like that. My heart has been broken betting on the Jets.

6. Tigers would be a good name to bet on if you're into cats, but the NFL doesn't have any. On the flip side, Bengals is just plain stupid as a team name, being a province in northern India. Again, this ain't cricket! That name explains a lot of the futility of the Cincinnati team over the decades. So bet on the Cincinnati Bengals at your peril. Better to stick with Lions or Panthers. [Or maybe take Valentino Rossi's approach and place the slogan "Viva La Figa" on the team uniform... he he he... "long live pu$$y"... but I digress.]

7. As a general rule, savage animal names are over-rated, rarely earning winning records, even rarer to go deep into the playoffs. The best teams celebrate the blue collar, salt-of-the-Earth types that built American up and continue today purchasing team merch and seasons tickets. The Steelers of Pittsburgh for the hot, sweaty, sooty, molten goodness that polluted all three rivers in town, amen. The Packers are up there too, and we're talking meat packers, red meat by God. Houston Oilers too, that's a good one even though they moved to Tennessee and changed their name. And don't forget the Brewers of Milwaukee, except sadly that's baseball.

8. In sports, as in life, greed is good. Buccaneers made a living stealing from everyone else at sea. Titans did the same from their Wall Street banks. Raiders and Vikings... ditto. 49ers just tried to dig gold out of the ground. These are safe bets.

Final rule... Use common sense. If a Cardinal goes up against an Eagle or a Falcon, whose gonna win? It's obvious. Same thing with the Bears against the Salmons or the Dolphins. Good luck!

Final rule #2... When I played high school football, I was a badass Herndon Hornet. The NFL doesn't have any Hornets, but keep the Charlotte Hornets in mind for the NBA Pick 'Em game.

Glad we're up to 11 players. If anyone else wants to join in, you've only missed one game, which won't be a big deal over the course of the season. Anyone can also drop in and play a week here and there if they want.

Right you are, sorry. I somehow missed yours and Andy's Saints picks. So Andy has one more as well, and is tied for the lead.
