Robby Gordon will not give up #7 for Danica: Robby Gordon says he won't give Danica Patrick the #7 when she enters the Sprint Cup series part-time next season. "C'mon!'' Gordon said on Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway. "Why would I?'' Patrick said on Thursday, when officially announcing plans to leave the IndyCar Series to drive a fulltime Nationwide Series schedule for JR Motorsports and part-time Cup schedule for Stewart Haas Racing in 2012, that she'd like to keep the #7 that she's had throughout her motorsports career. Gordon, who has had the number for six years in Cup, isn't willing to bargain. "'I've built my business around the # 7,'' Gordon said. "It's all fun and games, but I think she should be proud to drive the #77.'' The 77 could be available. It hasn't been used for a full Cup schedule since Sam Hornish Jr. lost his ride at Penske Racing after the 2010 season.(ESPN)(8-27-2011)

Good for Robby.

Agreed! I still associate that number with another owner/driver, though.
RIP Alan Kulwicki.

i certainly wouldn't give the #7 to danica without reasonable compensation. c'mon robby, how much is the #7 bringing into your business? double that and go from there....

I wouldn't be surprised if nascar steps in and screws Robby out of the number in some way.

Didn't he try to get her to sign with his team? He could be sore about that. Anyway, she should suck it up and just use 77.

I have no idea. I just remember years ago he was crying because they wouldn't make Danica add extra weight to her car.

Hell Junior should give her the 88, he ain't doing worth a damn with it.

Maybe that's the problem since he went to the number 88 instead of the 8 he hasn't had much luck and can't seem to win anymore.

Which reminds me why can't he run the 8 there's no one running that number now anyway?

She looks to be somewhere between a 32-34a cup to me.

She also needs to learn it is "Go Deddy" not "Go Daddy" if she doesn't want people to laugh at her.

Personally, I think that whichever number he uses has nothing to do with anything.

To answer your question, I think Earnhardt-Ganassi racing has the use of the number #8 for as long as they want it. Just as RCR has the #3

dad says same thing. How can Robby say no to money? Selling Danica the 7 could make more $$ in one sitting than he makes with S&Ping both cars

NASCAR holds the rights to the car numbers and if NASCAR wants Danica to have the 7, she will have it.

EXACTLY!

Robby is a jerk, always has been always will be. I am not saying that because he will not give up the number, I mean who cares. I am saying that because he actually had the guts to say "he has built his business around the #7"....WHAT BUSINESS?!? I get he is an owner/driver...good for him. But it is not like he really is doing anything other than start and park. He could do that with the number "24724" and no one would notice!

I beleive thats incorrect sir, Teams get their number from NASCAR and then they have the Rights to the number ( if you check you'll find that the rights to most teams numbers are copyrighted ) unless they fail to use the number for a set period of time then it becomes NASCARs again. The 3 and 8 are the only exceptions to this that I know of?

Guess again. NASCAR controls the numbers. The way the number is displayed on the car is copyrighted, not the number itself.

NASCAR owns and assigns car numbers to an owner(s). NASCAR reserves the right to revoke or transfer car numbers to another owner/team at any time. Car numbers are non-assignable and non-transferable, except by NASCAR. NASCAR works with teams and sponsors when a specific number is requested. If duplication of numbers occur, which usually happens with the part-time teams, the fastest qualifier usually gets to use the number unless one team is considered full-time. In 2002, the #27 was used by Scott Wimmer for Bill Davis Racing and by Kirk Shelmerdine, both part time, however, Wimmer was listed in the #27 and Shelmerdine in the #`172 and when they attempted the same races, Wimmer got to use the #27 and Shelmerdine ran the #72, so NASCAR uses it's judgement in deciding who runs the number.(9-6-1999/9-17/2003)

Thats what they say butt it's not how it works in real life. Reserving the right to do something/anything is in any sanctioning bodys paperwork.

Name One instance where NASCAR took a number from a full time competing team?

1) Robby is not a full time competing team
2) NASCAR loves Danica
3) NASCAR hates Robby
4) NASCAR controls numbers
5) Danica will get the 7

Last time I checked the #7 has shown up and attempted every race this year. How is this not full time?

I will say this if Nascar screws the #7 from Robby I am sure he will sue Nascar and win.

Either way she is only running part time in Cup next year and it will probably be the 07. Then in 2013 Robby might be broke by then anyways so who knows. I think it is still too early to say wether or not she will get the 7 when she goes full time. Hell she may run so bad in NWS next year that moving her to Cup would be out of the question. Time will tell.

If they try to Robbies # 7, against his will, it is wrong.

Bad PR. I don't think she's that dumb

Id say just do what JR did no #8 so he went to #88 so she can be the #77

I would not want to see Danica in #77, that number is horrible. I would like to see either the number #7 on her car which looks like will not be possible or #28. With Robert Yates out of the business, who currently has NASCAR usage rights to that number?

Name the last time Brian France, Steve O'Donnell, Mike Helton and John Darby have all made public statements welcoming a driver to NASCAR and said they're excited to have them in the sport.

I missed the Brian France statement welcoming Brad Keselowski to NASCAR.

Mag's right, Danica will get #7.

:( Good Point

However I might have missed lil Brian saying it.....I don't pay much attention to him :p

# 69 is available!!

In light of Robby's financial issues, he may be willing to part with the #7 for a nominal fee...

#7-Robby Gordon plans to start and park in all but three of the remaining Cup races unless he can get additional sponsorship, he said at Bristol Motor Speedway. Gordon said he planned to run the entire race at Chicago, Texas and Phoenix because he has enough sponsorship for those races. If he gets more sponsorship, he'll run more races. Gordon also continues to build the energy drink company he created to help fund his racing programs. So, wouldn't it be better if Gordon skipped some races and be better prepared for the ones he ran instead of starting and parking most of the time? "If you don't come to the race track, you don't learn,'' Gordon said. "If you don't come to the race track, I can't help it that we can't find a sponsor to pay for right now. I can't help that. I've tried. Trevor Bayne doesn't have any sponsors on his car and he won the Daytona 500. That's the reality of it. We've tried hard, and this is what I love to do, so I'm going to continue to fight the fight.(Virginian-Pilot)(8-28-20100)
