Mebbe good for NASCAR, but Andy makes it sound like it is definitely not good for him. May cost WC a team or even two for next season.

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- NASCAR team owner Andy Petree is unwillingly back in a dwindling pool of hopefuls for a sponsor and Driver for the 2003 Winston Cup season.

Petree, whose Andy Petree Racing organization had to drop from two winning teams in 2001 to one this season when sponsorship for a second car did not materialize, said Friday morning at Darlington Raceway that summer-long negotiations to sell a majority ownership in his team to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not resulted in a deal.

"We have been working on it for a long time and it's not going to happen," Petree said. "I don't really know why we're not doing it, but it's not going forward, at least for 2003."

Petree said he had signed all of the contracts that called for him to surrender control of the team he has operated for the last six seasons. In the end, it was to no avail.

"I said I would say something today," Petree said. "I felt like we had to get it out in the open so we can put ourselves in a position for some of these opportunities that are available."

Petree said the recent Silly Season moves -- including the signings of Ricky Rudd and Elliott Sadler to Winston Cup deals with the Wood Brothers and Robert Yates Racing, respectively -- cost him opportunities while he waited on the Jones deal.

Jones was not immediately available for comment

i just read this at nascar.com , i wonder what happened

TRL since you are in Houston, you are obviously familiar with the antics of our illustrious Jerry Jones, "Head" of the Dallas Cowboys. This does not suprise me in the least. Jones probably decided after Petree had signed the agreements, that he wasn't getting enough "blood" from Petree, and decided not to follow through with the deal. I am not the least bit unhappy about this for Jerry Jones. Just look at what he has done to the Cowboys over the last few years, and what he did to Tom Landry (firing him on a golf course of all places). I wish Andy Petree all of the luck in the world that he can successfully gain sponsorship for next season to keep his organization going. Nascar is better off NOT having someone like Jerry Jones with his hands in the cookie jar.:bleh: Jerry Jones

I know I'm stupid and you guys will make fun of me but what is so bad about Jones. I don't really know who he is.

He is the owner of the Cowboys, IMO made them worse. No need for him In Nascar...We already have one AJ special...not 2. lol

majestyx, you are sooooo right about Jerry Jones.  NASCAR doesn't need him.  Every time I see his face on TV, my skin crawls.  *shiver*

After spending almost 8 yrs in Arlington (Majestyx I know quite a few people in your neck of the woods, more alvarado than Burleson) I too can't stand Jerry!! I was a cowboys fan all my life until about my 3rd yr there. If I see Jerry, Dion Sanders, or Michael Irvin on the tv, I change the channel. I LITERALLY can not stand the sight of either of them!!
