For the!.what a surprise!! As usual NASCAR's favorite!!!

JJ gave interview saying that nascar confirmed after NH that if that happened the team doesn’t need to back up into the box to tighten the lug. Doesn’t really make sense to me though. Wish nascar would comment.

As long as it's not a Ford and you are Mr seven time then no penalty!!

When NASCAR does not have a publicly published rulebook, they can make up rules and excuses as they go.

It's the new JJ rule. Doctors have a rule, Do no harm. Nascar has one too, Don't penalize JJ

Nascar to Kasey Kahne - "PENALTY"

Nascar to Jimmie Johnson: "nah fam you good"

Nascar has added more timing lines and you can't go thru multiple stalls to avoid them. Probably because of what Johnson and others were doing. Pit row penalties are for safety, not punishment for punishment sake like some want you to believe. Getting the lug nuts tight and having to back up to do so is more than enough penalty without piling another on top of it. IMO

There is a rule and penalty for servicing the car outside of the pitbox - which is exactly what happened. Whether its tightening a lugnut or manipulating sheetmetal, its servicing the car.

This time, NASCAR deemed an extra 2 seconds to back up and reinstall the lugnut as equal to a 1 lap penalty.

The inconsistency of ALL of their rulings, not just this incident, is the major issue. These pitstop penalties inconsistencies boomed when they did away with pitroad officials in favor of cameras.

I guess if you drank enough whisky it might. I wouldn't know.
"It's funny that this has come up now because it's high-profile now that the playoffs, we've been calling that particular thing consistently over the past couple of years with the lug nut,'' Miller said. "The way we look at that one is they did their normal pit stop in the pit box. He left. They realized they had a lug nut and at that point to us it becomes a safety issue and allowing them to put the lug nut on. The penalty becomes they lost probably 10 or 12 spots during that pit stop. That's a penalty.

"We let them do that because we want to make sure that it's a safe situation out there on the race track. That's the way we've been calling it. We like to give the teams the benefit of the doubt if we can, especially when it comes to something that might create an unsafe situation. That's the basis for that call. It's interesting that it's so high on everybody's list today when we've been calling it for a couple of years now.''

Your right NASCAR's sliding scale etch a sketch rule book.

They serviced the car outside the box ...... there is no way to deny that.

I could cut them more slack if it was the rear tire and not the tire in the next pit box.

So basically then, any other team would have just cruised out of the box and incurred the post-race penalty, which is why we rarely hear about this happening.

Makes sense when you think that teams don't get hit with a penalty if the drivers slides over the line and a tire changer goes to work on a couple of lugs before the driver backs up into the box
