Kevin Harvick after 2 races has the points lead after finishes of 22 and 9. This looks like it could possibly have a Matt Kenseth feel to the championship. I understand trying to spice up racing during the race but with an average finish above 15 should not equal a point lead.

I like the fact that you don't get nothing for having a dominant day, but the point system rewards stages a little too much IMO. However, part of the reason he has the points lead is the demolition derby that was Daytona.

Kevin Harvick has three stage wins. So far, all this has done is offset the bad luck at Daytona, which is a good thing. Haven't fans been complaining about how one bad race can upend championships under the 2014-2016 format?

I haven't looked at the points and IDK how things work with stage points or playoff points or whatever other types of points may be available. I am at a point where I just try and enjoy each race as a stand alone event that doesn't have any lasting impact or meaning after the checkers. I am not crazy about plate races but I watched Daytona and I really liked yesterday's race from Atlanta and I am looking forward to next week!!!

Stop paying attention to the point standings like I did several years ago. You'll feel better.

I could live with the original chase system but as further incarnations were implemented I lost interest in the point system. As far as I am concerned Nascar crowned its last champion in 2013 so now I just care about individual races and the quality of each event. I don't miss many races but if I do it is OK seeing they are like episodic TV shows to me.

2013? I stopped @ 2004.

I don't see the reason in it really. Points are irrelevant.

I think points are still important to many of the fans but as things become more contrived and complicated more people ignore them.

I could have written that.

Scary.

Whoa....I better check and see which one of my personalities has dominance today! I really liked yesterday's race and the stages and repair times are not issues with me at all. The stages are not necessary for me but if it helps keep the caution flag away I am all for them.

I hear ya loud and clear. The saving grace for the initial chase formats for me was that the participants had 10 races to show their stuff and I felt it was a method where the cream would still rise to the top. I still wish we could do it the old fashioned way with a few tweaks.

I am a bit lost with the points myself. I was trying to explain to my girlfriend how Harvick is the points leader but I just gave up. I think I will go with the thinking just enjoy each race as it is and I might even be coming around to enjoying each stage too. I probably stated I prefer the Winston Cup points system but this new system seems to reward a full season/body of work than a reset the last 10 races and then a reset every 3 races in the last 10. I'll just enjoy each race by itself and especially my favorites both Daytona races, both Bristol, Martinsville, Southern 500, Richmond, Chicagoland and Phoenix.

I can enjoy watching golf without knowing what the rankings are or understanding they're calculated. If the announcers tell me Putter McFairway is currently 9th in the world, I just nod and think, "Yeah, that sounds reasonable."

Kevin Harvick is leading the points. That sounds reasonable.

I think consistency is as important as winning over a long season. But I'd like to see a break down of how drivers get their points (segment points vs. the 3rd segment) to see how this is working. Winning the first 2 segments is about a half race worth of points.

Four segment wins equal 1 race win as far as points go, there is a possibility someone doesn't win a race makes it to the last race and finishes highest and wins the championship. It seems like it might enable someone not winning a better chance to win it all. Maybe they should split race winnings up for stages instead of points.

It's really not that difficult to figure out:idunno:

It probably isn't which is a good thing for those who enjoy tracking that sort of thing. If the driver Nascar crowns as champion was important to me I would learn the system but seeing it isn't I just try and enjoy the individual races.

Things are neither contrived nor complicated.

They are enhanced.

They are enhanced so I can have a better experience even though I don't know what an experience is. I think it might have something to do with being able to blab to your friends ad nauseum during the race, in the bathroom and at the concession stands. I hear Miller is working on beer cans that open without a sound so as not to infringe on the convivial conversation of young angst ridden kids..

These guys should be using the money they are spending at races to pay off their student loans.
