Near as modern research can determine, it depends on two things.

1) Which technique the fly uses to reach his inverted position. Apparently some prefer the barrell roll to inverted while others do a vertical 180 to inverted. Some will use either depending upon mood and circumstance.

2) The length of any given fly's shortest leg.
