never was much of a gordon fan, but once again nascar has shown just how f!@#*^ up they are

i really hate it for jeff

I'd like to see all the past championships of all times rescored for the last 10 races to see who would have won ALL those years..
To compare the past champions to the modern ones is not comparing apples to oranges..
Betsy:rolleyes:

Every team knows what the points standings situation is coming into the season. Sure, he would have won on another points system. He knew what he had to do to win it just like every other driver, and Jimmie was able to pull it off. I'm not discrediting his season at all, he did a great job and deserved the title as well...but you can't say 'what if' we had the other points system really, because we didn't.

That's the most accurate post on the subject yet. Everyone had the same set of rules the past 4 years since they instituted the Chase. All the drivers knew going in what those rules were, and how the points would be distributed for the final 10 races. This year, Johnson was the only one that used the point system wisely. Sure, Jeff had a great, if not legendary season for the first 26. But he came up short because he didn't play the game right.

I hate football analogies, but look at it this way. The Patriots this year could go undefeated, and it looks like they will have scored more points than anyone by the last game. But, they still have to go through the playoffs. And because of that, they could lose in the first or second round of playoffs, or even in the AFC championship game to a team that goes 10-6. It is what it is.

Bottom line, Gordon still has 4 championships.

Yeah, I think the same way regarding the NFL and the Patriots there. It's almost the same thing...so there is a Chase? Improve, or continue to win...that's how the system is setup and everyone knows. They didn't throw a curveball at anyone.

Apparently it matters to some people or it wouldn't be here.

It does matter.
It matters if even one person feels the ten race shootout is a bad format to determine a champion.
It matters that everyone who feels that way should send a letter to NASCAR.
It matters that a team performed well above average ALL season and failed to win the championship.
It matters that Jimmie Johnson is the champion but did not perform as well as the second place team for the entire season.

Think about why it matters.
Leave your personal favorite driver out of the equation and think about the format.
Think about a driver/team that has consistent performance the entire season and lost the championship in the last ten races despite having an average finish of 5.1 compared to Johnsons 5.0.
And now, think if it happened to your favorite driver and he had performed as well as the team that finished second did all season with a record setting thirty top ten finishes and four hundred plus point lead.
It does matter.

As to the comment of drivers/teams knew the deal going in and the format has been the same the last four years is true but that doesn't make the championship format right or just.
That is why it matters.
Doesn't it matter when fans see an injustice ??
Doesn't it matter if they express an opinion ???

As for the drivers/ team owners, what recourse do they have??
Would they go on strike ??? Say they won't race ??? Cut off their nose to spite their face ???

It takes the fans who see the inequity of the championship format.
So it does matter.
Not to take anything away from Jimmie Johnson and team as they did win the championship under the current format but that still does not make it right.
So yes, it matters.

Okay, the kick me sign is on my back so go ahead, take your best shot.

FWIW, my letter protesting the ten race shootout was mailed last week.

I don't care how many of you complain....the chase is here to stay. It may get tweaked again but it's not going anywhere.

Look at it this way. Rather than being upset with the system, you should probably be upset with Jeff Gordon. The points are what the points are, and everyone knew going into the last four seasons what was going to happen. Now, Gordon looked to be ready to just be his consistent self for the last ten races, and hope that a 5th place average would have been enough to win the title. Johnson, on the other hand, approached those last ten races with the right attitude: Win as much as possible.

And i hate to rain on your parade, but I seriously doubt that a few, or even a few hundred fan letters are going to change anything. Nascar has lasted 50+ years doing what they want to do. Don't look for a reversal of the chase anytime soon.

Wonder how many cups Earnhardt Sr and Petty would have had they had the Chase?:p

All due respect Bucky, but:

1. People are permitted to voice their complaints.

2. How are you so sure that it is here to stay. Hell, even Brian doesn't know what he will change tomorrow.

Hmmm, you do know that the King won many points more than the actual winner in the early days don't you? The system that everyone seems to adore hasn't always been the system that they've used to determine the champion. Things change and the world keeps on spinning.

Whiz, yer a dear old man, emphasis on old ( :) ) but you should know as well as anyone that what we see is not going to change. In another thread, there was a comparison to the NFL Pats going undefeated and then possibly losing in the playoffs to a team that might be 10-6. What makes this comparison even worse is that if the Pats do go undefeated in the regular season and make it all the way to the Super Bowl, they could be beat by a "wild card" team that didn't even win their division. It's happened before that a wild card team has won, an not just once and not that far off either. You can compare the Chase with the playoffs if you like as that is what Brian France had in mind. The Chase puts those teams that made it well ahead of those who didn't and thus they win more money. Maybe 15-20 years from now, someone will change the scoring system and it will give us a different winner, but I'm sure that whatever comes, there will always be sore losers.

1. Go ahead and B!ich...it's not gonna matter.
2. Get back to me when it changes back

On INC Dave reported that Brian said no changes next year.
If Nascar continues to lose viewers, I don't think fans in the stands matter as much, something will change. Bank on that.

Whizzer........... That was a post I totally agree with. I am not even close to being a Gordon fan but think he got DaShaft. I hate the chase.

Great post Whizzer! Ok, the Chase might stay for a while, but I think it CAN be tweaked. The leader after 26 races should get some kind of bonus along with wins going into the Chase. Maybe 10 pts for every 100 pts they've earned over the other drivers? Something acknowledging their lead. I'd say that even if it was a driver a couldn't stand. It's not just because I'm a Gordon fan.

Jimmie did a great job in the Chase. I don't take that from him. It's just I don't think he was the best driver all season. He was the best driver in the last 10 races.

Sure you may want to compare the Chase to football, but I really don't see them the same at all. How many players are there on a football team? Yeah, they have their "team" in racing as far as crew chiefs, pit crew, etc., but there's only one driver on the track. I just don't see racing as the same as stick and ball sports at all.

....... but you should know as well as anyone that what we see is not going to change. In another thread, there was a comparison to the NFL Pats going undefeated and then possibly losing in the playoffs to a team that might be 10-6....... there will always be sore losers.

I am amazed that people are so willing to sit back and present the attitude,
" what we see is not going to change".
WOW !! This is sad. People who disagree and do nothing is not the way to make changes.
As long as fans sit on their duff and do nothing, NASCAR will never fully understand the discontent on this issue.
BUT, if fans do protest, NASCAR will listen and possibly make adjustments to the ten race shootout or institute a format that is more equitable.

"Do nothing" attutudes remind me of the people who do not vote but complain about those who get elected.

And while I'm at it, why not go all the way ???
What the devil is the comparison to football ???
If someone wants to make a comparison, at least use a similar motorsport. There are plenty to choose from.
Pro-football has as much in common with NASCAR as Preparation H does to athletes foot.
How about the Friday night Craftsman Truck Series finale ?? No race to the chase, no ten race shootout, but a great finish to the very end to determine the champion.

Sore losers ??????
Re-read the number of posts from people on this forum and you will see a large number who do not like Jeff Gordon and openly say so, yet feel he got screwed because of the inequity of the present format.
This is not just Jeff Gordon, but about every driver/team in NASCAR.
It is about what is right and what is wrong.
Overwhelming evidence points to a larger number of fans who feel the current championship format is unjust and and feel that way for all the right reasons and not for them being sore losers.

So whaddya think about that ?????????????:D

I see playoffs

as a way of allowing short seasons, or deceiding who MIGHT be the best at a certain sport where each participant doesn't get to play all others.
NASCAR has many contests in which ALL players play each other at every event.. The ONLY fair way to establish who might be the year long champion is by adding up the year-long points to find the champion of any particular year.. period!

If Gordon would have won then this thread wouldn't be here. This website is dedicated solely to Jeff Gordon, If they had there way they would Give Jeff 5,000 points entering the chase. Hell most of em would watch the races if Jeff was the only car on the track.
Jeff Gordon's time has passed.

i don't know where you get that i can think of way more than 1 poster here that really don't care for jeffie

sad thing is this.......
NASCAR is a "what about today" sport..... look at baseball, and football- both are deep rooted in history and stats..... NASCAR, not so much so, except from season to season..... The love to talk about the modern era..... ( lets throw out the fact the record for most wins in a season is 27.....because they raced more then.... the record will be a tie between Gordon and Petty, event though Gordon competed in one more race than Petty did.....)
Now don't get me wrong, what Johnson did in the final ten races was amazing.... but still Gordon came in with what, 30 top tens????? Its easy to string together a few good runs at teh end, and stay outta trouble and pick up a championship..... Whats NASCAR going to do when a driver that doean't even run the whole schedule winds up in the chase.... ( don't laugh, Martin was there thru over half the season, until the DNS's finally caught up with him.... Once that happens, whats going to stop teams from picking and choosing what races to run??? in the end, once again, fans will lose out.

and for the record,RCR4life I was at N Wilsboro in April of '81 for MArk Martins first start...... been a fan for a long time.... no Gordon love here.

I believe that you haven't been paying much attention to all of the posters on this forum. EVERYONE here is certainly NOT a Jeff Gordon fan. Granted, there are quite a few of us who do root for him, not everyone does.

Although i don't have anything to back this up, I'd be willing to bet that they (nascar) get thousands of messages on how to fix things. Dumpsters even, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that that's where most of them end up.

I'm also sure that even thousands more right letters to the trade papers and magazines, and that Nascar doesn't pay attention to those either. Nor do they take stock in the columnists that criticize them.

And while I'm at it, why not go all the way ???

You're right about that, I too hate the football analogies (and I even used one). But you have to admit, that seems to be what more people can relate to when it comes to try and make comparisons.

You won't find me in that category. Larry has spoken, and still thinks that Jeff knew the point rules going in, and didn't play the game to his advantage when it counted.
So whaddya think about that ?????????????:D

Here's what I think. Nascar will make tweaks here and there to the chase, but it's here to stay, until someone new take over and completely overhauls the point system like they did back in 72. And in 20 years, when everyone's used to the concept, people will gripe about the change again. Remember when Nascar went to the smaller cars back in the 80s? At the time, the fans criticized the change, claiming the smaller cars to be the end of the sport. 20 years later, here we are, griping about something new.

They need to just quit tweaking things for a while, people will get used to it.

Jeff Gordon's time has passed.

I'm standing up for Gordon simply because he got robbed (again).
I'm not a Gordon fan, I'm a Carl Edwards (Roush) fan.
I would have stood up for any driver that deserved the Championship and got robbed out of it twice.

Whiz, I guess that we'll never agree on this issue so it's needless to carry it on further. My comparing it to football was simple and easy to understand. Each weekend there are 32 teams in football that play 16 games or so. They play to make the playoffs and from there, to go on to the championship. There are 43 teams each race in NASCAR that are attempting to make the playoffs after 26 races. From there, they race for the championship. You can't see any similarities there because you don't want to see any. If you ask anybody that doesn't have an interest in either of those sports and they will see the similarities in the format.

One last thing before I leave this subject. Brian France, as inept as he is, knows the discontent amoung the older fans and says that he doesn't want to allienate them. But he wants to grow the sport. People here in the south have seen the sport, that grew up here, slowly, but steadily move away. A friend of mine just today said that you don't even see any old redneck drivers anymore. I mentioned to him that this year, not one race was won by a driver from North Carolina, and the Chase didn't even have an NCer. He replied back to me that Junior Johnson and Richard Petty wouldn't even have a chance to race today. Dale Earnhardt wouldn't even get his foot in the door!

When there are numerous other motorsport venues to choose from, why turn to football for an analogy???????

But, the discussion goes way beyond not wanting or refusing to see any comparison between football and NASCAR since that door swings both ways.
Could some readers have missed the point the Champion of the Craftsman Truck Series was not decided until the final event, being used as a valid comparison. Hey, beats comparing NASCAR to the Philadelphia Patriots doesn't it ????

Trouble is, starting at the tender age of 22, here it is 49 years later and spending time around and as part of this sport, choking down some of the changes and seeing favorites get preferential treatment from NASCAR, find this is a bit much. So rather than do nothing, I'll voice my opinion and register a protest to anyone willng to read or listen. They might not like what I say but at least the word is in their ear, just like my letter to NASCAR.

Of course, there are those who like the present format and they should be the ones who do nothing. Those who complain about things and do nothing get what they deserve. :)

Those who complain about things and do nothing get what they deserve. :)

Here, here! I'll drink to that. :beerbang: BTW, ever heard of heat races? Not quite the same as qualifying. More like fighting to get into the race for the trophy. I guess the more we draw this out, the further apart we get.

I'm standing up for Gordon simply because he got robbed (again).

I would have stood up for any driver that deserved the Championship and got robbed out of it twice.

Who robbed him? He knew what he was going into when the chase started, it has been here for 4 yrs.! He Gave it away.

i agree with something VaDirt said a few posts back... if anyone's gonna be upset about this, be upset at Gordon.

EVERY driver, no one was uninformed, knew how the chase was gonna work going into it. bottom line is that Gordon got beat in the last 10 races and those are the ones that matter most.

does the chase suck.......yes
will it be back next year.........yes
will it suck next year.........probably
will nascar care if we all hate it...........NO!

it is what it is and Johnson won fair and square... by the rules of today.

A guy could win the next 10 championships by the old points system, but unless he wins the chase he aint the champ!

Sorry, but I just can't be mad at Gordon with a 5.1 avg. finish in the Chase when Johnson had a 5.0. Any other season, Gordon would have taken it easily and I'm sure in the future that kind of record will be more than enough to win. He had a phenominal season and I'm not angry. Sometimes I was angry they didn't get his car dialed in all through the race when they had their team mates having their driver's car for the most part where it should have been in the first place. Even with that, with a 5.1 avg. finish, how can I even be upset with them? It just was a sucky outcome as far as a lot of people think. I've read columns by people who are known for their hate of Jeff and they've even made complaints about the system and how he got robbed. There's people here who don't like him and think he got robbed. Whatever.

Yes, all the drivers knew the rules and what they were getting into, but what choice did they have if they don't like it? Not race? It's the same as the top 35 rule and you hear lots of teams complaining about that AND how qualifying is done. They all know the rules. It doesn't mean they have to like them nor do we.

One of my real complaints about the comparisons to football and other sports is, they get to be "regional champions" or "conference champions" before they go into their play-offs. Even at the high school level, there's their regular season in their classification, then there can be an all-county winner and finally an all-state champ. They get some props for having a good season prior to their play-offs as well as during their play-offs depending on the level. A team will always be the Eastern or Western Conference Champs, etc., etc., so they will have that distinction to look back on.

Not so with Nascar and I'm not sure a "regular season" champion is the answer, but certainly something should be recognized for being the best for most of the season. I get really tired of hearing this was Jimmie Johnson's year. He did well enough, but in reality, it was Jimmie Johnson's CHASE.
