Old Points Standings

Of course, there are those who like the present format and they should be the ones who do nothing. Those who complain about things and do nothing get what they deserve. :)

I'll disagree with this somewhat. If you like the present format then let Nascar know. Don't sit back and let the complainers force Nascar to change the rules again.
And, don't read this as I like the present format. I just don't think you should sit on your duff if you feel strongly either way.

The format was created solely to compete with the Football ratings on Sundays for the last 10 races of the season. The ratings were down during this period under the old format. People would have been less likely to watch the final 2 races because Jeff had such a huge lead he would have wrapped it up. (i.e. see the Busch Series where Carl ran away with the title and thus made the series not as much fun to watch)

Therefore, this is why the chase was born. No matter if you like it or not, the chase DID make the last 10 races more exciting then they would have been under the old system. Unfortunately this hurt Jeff's chances at Drive for 5, but thats the business side of NASCAR and I do not see it changing.

Who the Chase helped the most (In reference to the old points standings):

Clint Bowyer +5 spots
Kurt Busch +3 spots
Jimmie Johnson +1 spot

Who the Chase hurt the most:

Denny Hamlin - 7 spots
Tony Stewart - 3 spots
Carl Edwards - 2 spots

FYI Matt Kenseth was the ONLY driver that would have finished in the same position regardless of the current or old points format in 2007.

Anyone who'd like to complain about us complaining can click on the "contact us" link at the bottom of this page and let the admins know that some of us here are not agreeing with the opinions of everyone else.

You can also let them know that apparently we don't pay for internet access to fall in line and agree with the other zillion internet users.

I doubt it'll help, but hey - it's your computer, your time and your money, so give it a go :)

Finally. Yes, the chase is not right.

Jeff Gordon had one the most consistant seasons in the histroy of Nascar and has obsolutely nothing to show for it! These drivers don't race for 2nd place.

And I am no way, shape or form a Gordon fan but I know what an injustice is when I see one.

The France family knows is isn't right and I know it's isn't right, so if some of us want to complain, we will do that.

Sorry that I can't be eloquent as whizzer, but that's just the way I see it.

Bingo, we have a winner here. However, there are those of us who still love to watch a "race" and not just watching the race to see who might become the eventual champion. I remember when Bill Elliott won his title, Rusty Wallace said that if he were to come into the last race with the lead, he wouldn't stroke just to win. Though he still says that he didn't, I sure as hell thought he did. But the whole point was that he felt that the race was just another race that he wanted to win. In a perfect world, each race would be just that, a trophy and that would be it. However, and especially in these times of high dollar sponsors and contracts, winning a race isn't the main purpose of being out there. It's the points man, points! Wanna go all out and win the race, damn the torpedos, or wanna rake in the big bucks? It's called points racing and thats where the whole problems lies. We see it at the local tracks as well, but there, they aren't racing for millions of dollars, so when you tack on zeroes at the end of the prize package, it makes it all that much more so. It's a built in problem that will not go away unless they take away the purse money.

Well, I like to watch racing, so I watched all of the Busch races even though Carl had it tied up. I probably watched more of it even after he was already running away with it. I just got MORE into racing and made sure I watched or taped it.

Obviously, from their TV ratings, the Chase has NOT helped. Also, I know fans of other drivers who were less than thrilled to watch because they weren't in the Chase. They got tired of their drivers not getting much air-time if at all. More felt that way as their drivers were eliminated from the Chase and got tired of watching the Jimmy, Jeff and sometimes, Clint show. As far as it being about money from sponsors, what about the sponsors of all those drivers who weren't in the Chase? They put a lot of money out there, too.

I agree that ALL ths ponsors put money out there and you are right ONLY the chasers got the on air coverage. This does hurt NASCAR as well because I am hearing that most sponsors are stating they will pay $25 million a year to the team, with an additional $15 million if they make the chase. So that puts even more pressure on the teams. The sponsors want to see their names during the last 10 races, and this is the way they are trying to make sure it happens.

NASCAR is a business. Period.

P.S. I just used those figures to illustrate a point, nothing factual.

Who robbed him? He knew what he was going into when the chase started, it has been here for 4 yrs.! He Gave it away.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding of the issue here.
It is not whether Jeff Gordon knew what he was getting into or whether Jeff Gordon gave the championship away.

The issue is the inequity of the race to the Championship Chase.
Nothing more or nothing less.
It is not complicated.

My opinion has nothing to do with those who knew what they were getting into, if they are thought to have given the championship away, or who won or lost the championship. Many feel ANY driver in a similar circumstance would have been "robbed".

After reading the posts on this thread, it is obvious most know the format.
It seems clear most understand the format.
Nearly all know the current foramt has been in existence four years.

The point is, if anyone feels the race to the chase and ten race shootout are unfair, they should tell the sanctioning body responsible for setting the rules and at best, hope for change. :)
