ON Going Chase/Wildcard Battle

Looks to me like Harvick is slipping into the grasp of the WildCard game No Wins and only 21 points ahead of Tony in tenth.
Tony with his Three Wins may also shake up the WildCard picture if he falls from tenth that will put a hurting on the Hopefuls who only have one Win and are after a WC spot. Tonys only 16 points ahead of kahn and 34 ahead of Edwards.
Next couple weeks look interesting.

Add your thoughts please I'm to tired to type anymore.
 
Well Kasey is locked I say, unless one of the other wildcards win.
 
The wild card, this year, is proving to be one of the best things to come along with the chase era. It is the most exciting headline in the sport. It is elevated this year with having some big names involved like Gordon, Kyle, Edwards and Kahne!

Good point as I suspect many were expecting those 4 drivers to be well inside the top 10 by now.
 
I like the new points system :) If Joey Lagano Wins the next two races and leads the most laps he makes The Chase on points....... IF Tony Stewart finish's last and leads no laps in both races :laugh:

Been watching since the Wide World of Sports days Flash . But have never seen any interest in the 10th to 15th place drivers before . Most years ,the top three or four were decided by now and they were the only ones that got any attention .People who say the chase format isn't working are nuts .

Then thats me, as DP says, love racin hate the chase- a season is 36 points races that is ultimately won by the Cup Champion.
 
Since this thread has already taken the turn towards a Chase debate I have to say that I do like the points system as it still rewards consistency but I am still a pre-Chase fan. It's the resetting of the points that I don't like. It has become the best driver over a 10 race season. It's nothing more than that. Lost are the true comparisons of the Champions of today vs. the history of the sport. It'll be great for Jimmie and his fans the day that he gets his 7th and 8th titles and the comparisons will be made to Earnhardt & Petty but we dinosaur breed of fans will still remember that the title was once won by being the best over a long grueling season. Sure many of the Cup Champions were decided with races remaining on the schedule and you know what, people still watched and people still went to the races and I was one of them.
 
Agreed DP for the Hardcore Longtime Race Fan The Chase is a JOKE but it's what we have now and the cards we're dealt so we might as well work with it and try to enjoy it.

You can't compare anything from the Pre-Chase days to today...... Are todays Drivers, Cars, Sponsors, Rules or Hell even tracks the same as they where when Racing was Pure Racing? NOPE!

What we have now is Entertainment and a Show :( Butt it's still somethin.

Oh, I still enjoy the racing. I just don't like how they've decided to determine the Champion, that's all. Sure it's the cards that we've all been dealt. Not everyone gets dealt a good hand. I fall under that category.

It's been a work in progress for some time now since the implementation of the Chase. Most years they try to fine tune it with one change or another.

I have to disagree on the comparison comment as far as driver, cars, sponsors, etc..... Things have changed since this sports inception but one thing that was maintained was the way a points Champion was crowned. The idea behind the Chase is not lost on me. I understand fully why it was implemented. I just don't think that it was a successful idea.

True enough, that is what the wildcard positions are about and it does add excitement for those out there that can appreciate and buy into the Chase concept.

The Chase does everything that it is designed to do and it does it very well IMO. Like you say though, we just don't like it.

Personally I like to see the best driver win. The best driver over the season. No disrespect to the Jeff Gordon fans out there but he's 158 points out of the lead right now. 158 points. One hundred fifty eight points. A win in the next two races probably puts him on equal footing with half of his fellow Chase competitors. That's in a season which he is so so at best, (by Jeff Gordon standards). He can go on to beat someone like Greg Biffle by one point over a 10 race shortened season and be declared the 2012 NASCAR Champion even though he would have been out performed throughout the season. That's why I don't like it. It has great potential to reward mediocrity and that's never been what this sport is about.

Damn straight FIF, this race to the chase this year is very entertaining........but instead of embracing it, why don't we just harp on a bout the good old days.......:captive:

Damn good question and one that we'd probably never know the answer to. That is, as long as Mr. H doesn't stick his head in the ****pit and tell Jimmie to 'clutch it' should the occasion arise. ;)

I'm guessing yes.

He wouldn't have to.

He'd willingly help Gordon into the chase but don't expect him to give an inch after it starts - nor should he, IMO.

Business is business Ozz. I don't think that he can be open and up front about it , like you could back in the day . It would be occurring now in private strategy meetings . 'What if's ',stuff . So no open order has to be given over the radio. That kind of thing would embarass sponsors ,crews , etc.. Jimmy would know what a huge deal it would be for the company ,to have all cars in the race . Then , maybe a speeding penalty on pit road ? Cue the black helicopters . And hello Jeffy.

One would hope this is the case.
This has to be one of the best lead ups to the chase in quite a while imo.

Last year it was pretty much a done deal a couple of weeks before Richmond but there are definitely more players for the wildcard spots and people looking to get into the top ten.

Those wins don't count if you get a wildcar spot, remember. Keselowski had 3 wins last year and started the chase in 11th spot. Although, he went into Ricmond 145 points behind Busch and started Chicago only 12 back.

Mr. Hendrick has stated time and time again that there would be No Team orders of that type and from watching his morals and standards over the years I don't doubt him at all. Of course if you've paid attention to the interaction between his drivers the last several months it's kind obvious that they would'nt pull over for each other anyway.

When you get a spare moment or two, do a bit of web searching about Mr Hendrick.
 
Right now it looks like Johnson, Keselowski, Hamlin, & Stewart would be tied for the lead at the beginning of the Chase. That is unless one of these guys wins one or more of the next two races. There is also even potential for more than just them to be tied heading into the Chase. So much for that 26 race season winner. I'd like to see them go into the Chase as the top seed or at the very least part of a tie heading in.

How many points is Gordon out again? Don't think I got ya the first three times LOL..sorry man, not being a jerk, just found that funny.

I agree that the chase has most assuredly changed things, but it is what it is and every driver/team out there knows what it is gonna take to be champion now and that it is different than it was 10 years ago. Sure, am I still mad that under the same points system that Earnhardt and Petty won 7 Gordon would now have 6? Sure am, but I will just have to get over it. I don't devalue the chase championships the way so many folks tries to do, because everyone knows what is expected of them, and they better be finding a way to make it work. Team 48 has done the best job of that so far, and the 14 bunch worked it perfectly last season...just the way it is...

The Chase adds some excitement but I don't think the Chase drivers should be locked into the top 10 in points after just 26 races. I think consistency is more important over 36 races than wins. I think they should keep the points system through all 36 races so those outside the Chase can still have a chance at bigger reward by racing into the top 10 during the last races of the season. Let the top drivers have the Chase playoff for the championship only. Back in the day the championship was usually settled long before end of the season.

Dammit your right DP they'll all get 3 points for each regular season Win added to their Reset points.....I'll never get used to this crazy system :(
