Opinion: Cup Regulars in Nationwide

OMG thats what I was missing !!!!! OMG ..it's okay if it's not at 'a Nascar-sanctioned event' !!!!...OMG ..how could I have been so stupid not to see the difference !!!!....OMG ..tell Kyle it's ok to race at Pawtucket..you guys are nutz.

Dude stop been so dramatic.

I would have much less interest in watching a Nationwide race if there were no Cup guys in the race. Look at the difference in the grandstands between Nationwide and Cup and you'll have your answer; the Nationwide guys do not draw the crowds.

But at least it would be theirs.

Look at the truck series! People do go to watch these races live despite big name drivers not being in them.

Nationwide and Truck do not have the grandstand fanbase that Cup has, because fans would rather watch Cup drivers. It's as simple as that.

I don't think it's simply just the no name drivers vs. cup drivers.. I think it's the marketability.. The Nationwide series is barely marketed and the whole "names are made here" line is such bs with cup guys winning. Frankly, The Nationwide series isn't treated properly like a feeder system and nor is it different enough to appeal to different racing fans..

The truck series while the audience is not that big, has it's own little niche, sort of broken off from Cup/Nationwide in a way.. runs at tracks that Cup doesn't go to, has alot more younger talent in the series with only a few cup guys..

Their are fans that who will only watch the cup races, one race is enough.

If you really want to make Nationwide and Trucks popular, but keep out the Sprint Cup drivers. Do what the Trucks did on Wednesday, race at tracks like Eldora.

Eldora is probably going to be the most popular truck race of 2013, because it was a great race without too many cup drivers. (Is Newman a cup driver?). Honestly, I think that's what Nationwide and Trucks need to do. They need to race at tracks that the fans want them to race at, but NASCAR (or the track owners) don't want to put too much money into the event. Nationwide and Trucks can race at Rockingham, they can race at N. Wilksboro, etc. Use those two series to give the fans what they want and keep Cup the way it is.

I betcha that by the end of the season of them doing this, Nationwide and Trucks will be popular in their own right.

^^ This. All this.

I think that cup drivers do have a role to play in the lower ranks but only to a point.

Would they race in the NWS if they had a 28th place car every week- probably not. Although Mark Martin may be the exception.

I don't understand the "it helps TV ratings and at-track attendance" argument considering both are in the tank in a year where only four races were won by Nationwide regulars.

Again? come on NASCAR fans.. go find me a Nationwide regular that doesn't like the cup guys being there... to be the best u gota beat the best.. they know it.. every single one of those guys wants to get to cup... think when they get there theyre gona complain about how good those guys r? also it brings fans to the stands and the television.

There's more to the issue than simply being in the race. As I asked earlier, would they be there if they didn't have the best equipment? If they are going to be there, why not level the playing field?

I would love to see the trucks go back to mostly short track racing. If memory serves, it started out that way and was quite popular. Pair trucks and N'wide at smaller tracks. Loved seeing South Boston races, those were GOOD.

I think it has more to do with them being better at giving feedback and knowing what they need in the car... thats why theyre the best and in the cup series..

Agreed. Honestly Nationwide and Trucks are suffering because they lack their own brand. Nationwide is seen as Cup-Lite and I don't doubt that Trucks are seen in a similar manner. Give Nationwide and Trucks their own identity and their own brand, and you won't even need cup drivers in those two series.

The "Names Made Here" line isn't BS, there are plenty of names being made in the NW Series right now: Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Matt Kenseth, etc. ;)

But seriously, you make a good point about the Truck Series carving out its own niche. I think the Truck Series now is what the NW (then BGN) series was 15-20 years ago: a series made up of mostly of guys on their way up or on their way down in their careers, with a handful of Cup guys running a handful of races. The old BGN series used to run on a lot of non-Cup tracks as well, such as Hickory, South Boston, Nazareth, Milwaukee, etc. However, for the past decade or so, NW/BGN has been nothing more than a watered down version of Cup. It is what it is, and as I stated in an earlier post, it's not as bad now that Cup guys can't win NW titles. But I think the series still has a huge identity crisis, one that swapping out SS's and Fusions for Camaros and Mustangs isn't enough to fix.

What about KHI with Harvick, Stewart, Bowyer, and Newman? KBM with the Busch brothers last year? Stick these guys in the equipment most everyone else is running in and they pretty much fall back to earth.

I think you two may have stumbled on something right there. With any product/people, it's all about creating a brand.

Agreed, Lacking their own brand and cup lites describes it perfectly. Just my opinion.

Random thought --- not only pair trucks and N'wide, but cut the horsepower with smaller engines. Eldora proved that slower speeds can still produce good racing.
Kind of like when they used to run 6-cylinder engines in the old BGN cars. They sounded like WWII fighter planes, but the racing was good :)

They can make 6 cylinder OHC engines sound very much like these cranked up 8 cylinder engines. It would save teams a ton of money If nascar went that route for NW and cup RP tracks. Make the displacement high enough and the RPM's low enough to use the engines for 2, or even 3, NW races without losing much on the track. At the start of the season simply mandate races as '2nd use' and '3rd use' only, and hobble or ban anyone who doesn't have the proper used engine for the race.

Some of y'all may argue that Cup regulars bring in more viewers for NW, but I have the exact opposite argument - Cup regulars are keeping people from watching NW races. At least that's the case for me.

Well you are missing out on some great racing for a really stupid reason.

And all dirt track Truck races because you got hit with a rock.
It felt like a rock but left a mark like dirt. Maybe a dirty rock? Alls I know is wear your safety goggles and keep your mouth shut when watching a race there. ;)
