Date: March 1, 2015
Event: Folds of Honor 500 (Round 2 of 36)
Series: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Location: Atlanta Motor Speedway (1.54-mile oval)}
Start/Finish: 18th/16th (Running, completed 324 of 325 laps)
Point Standing: 16th (51 points)

Winner: Jimmie Johnson of Hendrick Motorsports (Chevrolet)

Danica Patrick, driver of the No. 10 GoDaddy Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), finished 16th in Sunday’s Folds of Honor 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway after fighting an electrical fire and ongoing handling issues.

Patrick started the race from the 18th position and was scored in 30th when she radioed to the team that there was smoke in the ****pit of the No. 10 GoDaddy Chevrolet. Shortly thereafter she noted that she could see flames under the dashboard. Patrick attempted to contain the fire, and as crew chief Daniel Knost radioed for her to come to pit road so the team could assess the situation, the caution flag waved. As the field made its way around the track, Patrick told the team that the fire was out but the car’s tachometer was no longer working.

The source of the flames was deemed to be a small electrical fire, which quickly extinguished itself but left Patrick without a read on her car’s RPMs. The tachometer is utilized in part to identify a proper speed for pit road, and without it a driver could easily speed down pit road and face penalties or not go fast enough and lose positions. The GoDaddy team quickly rallied together to determine a solution to the problem. They had Patrick take note of her oil pressure and used that as a rough gauge for the proper speed for pit road during the remainder of the race.

In the midst of that issue, the team faced another problem: Whenever they would put tape on the grille of the car, it either would not stick at all or it would come off in the middle of a run due to the cold temperature and humidity. In either instance, without the tape on the grille Patrick’s No. 10 GoDaddy Chevrolet would instantly develop a tight-handling condition.

Despite the difficulties the team faced, Patrick cracked the top-15 at lap 199 by passing Jeff Gordon and ran as high as 14th before a subsequent cycle of green-flag pit stops. The caution flag waved several laps after the No. 10 team pitted and left Patrick a lap down to the leader. She worked to put herself in contention for the “Lucky Dog” award to get her lap back, but her efforts were thwarted each time the caution flag waved again in the closing laps of the race.

When the field took the green flag with 14 laps to go, Patrick was scored in the 15th position, still a lap down to the leader. She lost a spot on the restart and noted the car was “tight off the corner” on the final run. She wasn’t able to make up any ground and took the checkered flag in the 16th position.

“I’d have to say one of our biggest problems today was that the tape kept coming off the front (end of the car),” Patrick said. “The tape was making me handle. I needed all of it. It wasn’t only running pretty cool, but the tape helps front downforce. It was pretty noticeable when the tape came off. That happened at the end and also happened in the middle of the race when I went that lap down. By all means, I was very tight in that run, but that was our biggest problem today as far as a better result goes.

“It happened, and we all kept our wits about ourselves and kept digging. I feel like we made a lot of progress as a team this weekend. I think we would’ve been on the lead lap if the tape would have stayed on. We didn’t get our lap back at the end, but we got a solid result and it’s been a decent start to the year.”

Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Jimmy John’s/Budweiser Chevrolet SS, led the four-car SHR contingent Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway by finishing second in the Folds of Honor 500.

Harvick had to come from the back of the 43-car field after the team made an engine change during final practice on Saturday. He wound up leading six times for a race-high 116 laps en route to his sixth top-five in 25 career Sprint Cup starts at Atlanta.

Harvick, the reigning Sprint Cup champion, has picked up right where he left off in 2014. He finished second in the season-opening Daytona 500 last Sunday, and the runner-up finish at Atlanta marked the fifth-straight race Harvick has finished second or better. Dating back to Texas Motor Speedway in November, Harvick has finished second, first, first, second and second.

Regan Smith, interim driver of the No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet SS for SHR, finished right behind Patrick in 17th.

Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS for SHR, finished 30th after getting caught up in a multicar accident late in the race.

Jimmie Johnson won the Folds of Honor 500 to score his 71st career Sprint Cup victory, his first of the season and his fourth at Atlanta.

Harvick finished 1.802 seconds behind Johnson in the runner-up spot, while Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top-five. Martin Truex Jr., AJ Allmendinger, Brett Moffitt, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Newman comprised the remainder of the top-10.

There were 10 caution periods for 54 laps, with six drivers failing to finish the 325-lap race.

With round two of 36 complete, Harvick leads SHR in the championship point standings. He is third with 86 points, two points behind first-place Logano. Patrick is 16th with 51 points, 37 out of first. Stewart is 35th with 16 points, 72 out of first. Smith didn’t accumulate any points because he is a fulltime driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

She finished 16th, Regan 17th and Tony 30th, Even before his car was damaged he was barely cracking into the 20's. Something is wrong.

The 14 car was awful yesterday to put it mildly.

To be quite honest, I don't think SHR is that good of an organization overall. Stewart didn't do much in the second half of 2012, and although he's a slow starter, his 2013 start was even worse than usual. RCR is a second-rate organization and Newman's numbers with that group last year were very similar to his SHR numbers. Busch's Furniture Row ride had more raw speed than the #41 did last year and it was more reliable too.

The haters will soon be arriving with their hate . They tend to sleep late because it wears them out .

Does anyone know if DP has any specific goal(s) she would like to attain this year?

LOL, only DP sheeple should comment eh?

Don't give a damn who posts on any thread . The Kyle Busch haters wear me out , the Dale Jr haters wear me out , the Kurt Busch haters wear me out , the Danica haters wear me out . I just don't understand getting up in the morning and spewing hate for the rest of the day . Just don't like em . No offence .

Reasons to ooze enthusiasm regarding DP.

She did a good job of getting on and off pit road sans tach. BTW Dick Trickle's dashboard and vehicle interior smoked regularly

Not just one but 2....yes I said 2 wrecks she drove through and avoided

No tire issues for this young lady

Was the 3rd car to finish one lap down

She only finished 10 places and 1 lap worse than she did in the Atlanta race in 2014.

Overall I would say there is a lot to be excited about and good momentum going into the next race.

I agree that spewing hatred is a vile and time consuming issue. The problem is that some folks take great umbrage when they are challenged or something they disagree with is posted. They squeal like stuck pigs and scream hatred as a means of coping with a situation they are ill equipped to deal with.

I think you're right, SHR just seems to be Harvick then everybody else. Tony hasn't been a factor for a couple years now, and outside of the Martinsville win, Kurt's season was a dumpster fire last year. So Danica's glacial rate of improvement may not be 100% on Danica.

When fans would say how good of equipment she was in i always wondered how they could know without driving her car. But, most fans probably wouldn't know even if they did drive her car.:)

Like her comments. The team kept digging and did not give up.team bonded? Hope so.

Proud.

Do you guys think that Hendrick sells different grades of equipment to SHR? For instance is the best stuff marked with a #4 meaning it goes to Harvick's team and it costs more. Maybe the scratch and dent discounted stuff goes to the 10 and 14?

something is wrong big time, I am starting to wonder if its tony himself. simply put harvick's setup in the car and while I would not expect tony to win with it. I would expect him to be able to run it in the top 15. for him to look like a front row motorsports car out there is simply inexcusable. ask youself how can david ragen jump into a gibbs car and run it half way decent?? and tony can't?? I am starting to think tony is the problem

Every driver likes different things in a set up. DW said JJ likes a loose car and Ive heard Patrick likes a flat go kart like feel. So just putting someone elses set up in a car wont make that other car necessarily run well.

Horsepower is different. But I think the engines in the 10, 41, 4, 14 are the same. I have to believe that. If you dont ya might as well send in those black helicopters,

That is a very good question. I don't know the answer but, i would think that a team would want to give there best parts to the driver that is in the running for the championship. But, most teams also need to perform good enough to keep the sponsors on their other cars happy.

The difference between the best and worst Hendrick engine on any given weekend is about 1.5 HP...

JMO but I think it would be counterintuitive to knowingly give DP poor parts (if they actually exist) as it would be sabotaging her and that does not make sense to me.

That makes perfect sense as when you are manufacturing something to strict tolerances it is all but impossible to make one piece greatly inferior to another.

I would surmise the equipment that SHR purchases or leases would be similar for each of its teams. In that case the difference in performance would would fall to more nebulous things such as driver skill/communication, team cohesion, pit stops yada yada.

The parts come from Hendrick and SHR has two titles in about half a dozen seasons.

For many years I heard many people claim the 25 team for Hendrick was an R&D car. It seemed preposterous to me then and still does now.

Yesterday was a good day for Danica, above average. Something to build upon. Good speed at certain stages.
She just needs to advance to the next tier of a top ten being above average, it is a baby step progression for all.
When top fives become above average or unsurprising then wins can happen with a little luck.

It is still early and most everyone but Harvick and JJ still have some growing pains to go thru with this new HP/Aero package.

But that would be the whole point of posting it , would it not?

I can't say with 100% certainty why some people go ape**** and call you a hater if you don't walk in lockstep with them. IMO it is a great shame because once people stop tolerating different views and/or playing the hater card debate ends. I like having my views, ideas and thoughts challenged but some people only want your agreement.

from what I have heard engines aren't built for specific cars they are just built and randomly end up at whatever teams. The difference between a good driver and an exceptional driver on the track isn't that much. its mainly how great the car is and what its capable of. Tony should be able to run ANY setup from any driver on the track to within about 3 or 4 tenths of what anothers best time in that car is. simply put tony should be able to run a havick setup to certainly within a half second on the track. half a second off is quite a bit but tony was off more than that. Tony didn't change crew chiefs after last year. Thats why I think tony the driver isn't up to snuff right now.

So true. Agree to disagree gets you a lot of places in life

I think your assessment of DP is fair and if in the next 3-4 races she can finish in the 15-20 spot it will speak well to her and her team. Maybe in the second half of the year aim for top 15's and next year top 12's and so on.

I don't know if Smoke's head and heart are not in wheeling a car right now or not. Perhaps he would rather still be on the sidelines or maybe even retired from Nascar competition but feels he can't leave just yet. Maybe yesterday was the perfect storm and everything the team tried did not work.

I agree , Smoke gets a pass . Maybe this just isn't a great year for him.

Amen. I never understood why some arguments become so heated and long lasting. Back when people were more brand loyal huge arguments would break out concerning the choice of vehicle a person made. Eventually someone would ask me what I thought and I would tell them I did not care and as long as the person was happy I was happy for them.

Hopefully he runs top 10 next week and Atlanta becomes a distant memory.[/quo

Hopefully . Some folks would be disappointed with anything less than a win , given his experience and the equipment that he is in .
