So I cant help but notice Penske has been running (and is planning on running in the future) a 3rd car. Do you think they are experimenting with adding a full time 3rd team? If so, who do you think will drive that 3rd car next year?

Montoya if he makes the most of his three starts this year.

They'd probably run a 3rd (and 4th car) full-time if they had the sponsorship for it. Every team would probably run 4 cars if sponsors with deep pockets were falling out of the sky.

I've got to think Ryan Blaney will have a seat at Penske but probably not for another 2 or 3 seasons.

If I were Roger, I'd keep it as a two man team. Both cars in the chase. Both having a strong year. Why take the risk of bringing the organization down with the expenditures for another team? Put that money into r&d

To be more to the point, I picture a future scenario where Larson, Elliot, and Blaney are all on one team...the #1, #8, and #42

I wonder if it might be a bit premature . It wasn't that long ago that they couldn't find any way to keep Hornish.

If so, I hope Carl and Brad have put all this behind them...

My speculation is that Penske is running a limited schedule with that 3rd car as a teaser for somebody, saying "Look, heres the car, heres the team, come get it." I would think if Penske wanted him, Carl would go and Subway/Fastenal would go with him. Remember the way Ford stepped in to keep Carl at Roush when he almost went to Gibbs the last time around. Ford has to see what we see and that is that Penske is the #1 Ford team. I would think if Carl wants a championship, Penske would be his best shot - not Roush. As hard as that is for me to type... Thoughts?

What about Aflac? lol

I can see Edwards jumping ship from Roush-Fenway, especially with them firing their lead tech, the organization is in rebuild mode. Not sure Carl wants to wait for that rebuild, plus Fenig may be ready to hang them up as well. I can see Ford wanting to keep him Brand loyal and Penske and a 3rd car would be a good fit. Sure Brad and Carl have history but that is 5 years ago.

I wouldn't count out Ganassi in adding a 3rd and going after Edwards. Everyone seems to be chasing after Hendrick equipment and Ganassi has two potential open spots.

Thanks Ted glad to have found this site. I have this sinking feeling that Jimmy's magic and Carl's driving ability are the only reason 99 has stayed competitive, Biff & Stenhouse have been total no shows and the 99 has used a lot of pit strategy to stay near the front of races. Roush is circling the drain:(

I just don't understand what happened to the Fenway connection . That was supposed to bring in money to put Roush on a secure foundation . Then the Yates connection was supposed to help with engineering . Add three top drivers in Biff ,Carl and Matt , crew talent in guys like Jimmy , should have been a recipe for success . What went wrong?

Yeah, but then The Captain can't move closer to World Domination. What fun is that? Leaves the door open for Chip. Can't have that.
