Maybe. What do they say..... where's there's smoke there's ..... Who knows?

This from yesterday.....

Petty Says Dodge Could Be An Option For 2013

Richard Petty says there’s a chance his NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide teams could return to the Dodge camp in 2013.

Speaking to reporters at Kansas Speedway Friday, the 200-time Sprint Cup winner said he believes the automaker was shocked by Penske Racing’s recent decision to jump to the Ford camp next season, leaving Dodge without a viable 2013 entry in NASCAR’s top series.

"I think they're pretty confused because they got a plug pulled out of them and (weren’t) really expecting it,” said Petty. “I would imagine they're going to have to sit down and have some prayer meetings to figure out really what they're going to do."

Petty said that while sponsorship is largely secured for Sprint Cup Series drivers Aric Almirola and Marcos Ambrose and Michael Annett’s NASCAR Nationwide Series entry, he currently has no competitive plan or manufacturer affiliation in place for 2013.

"We've got our sponsors pretty well lined up for next year,” said Petty, “but where we go with the cars and engines and things like that, we don't really have a plan. We've got a plan, but I don't know if anyone is going to go along with our plan or not."

Petty Enterprises – the family team that served as a precursor to today’s Richard Petty Motorsports – had a long and successful tenure with the Mopar brand, predominantly fielding Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth entries from the 1950s through the middle of the 1978 season. The team currently obtains cars and engines from Roush Fenway Racing.

From here.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I'll bet Earnhardt/Ganassi are being courted too. The ironic thing is that Dodge will have to offer more than a 3 year commitment to get a deal done.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when Penske, Ford and Yates talk to Roush about doing engines for Roger. Roush surely see's his top dog status with Ford eroding next year, and that will make his eye twitch.

Maurice in the engine room, and Dale Inman to running the races, sweet memories. I respect RP probably the classiest driver ever at least imo. But RPM needs a supplier like a Rousch, Hendricks, or Childress to provide the Hardware.

I can't see any Dodge vendors that could provide those same services in 2013.

I see a longshot solution. Ganassi and Earnhardt are near the end of the tail with Chevy commitment, well behind HMS and RCR. If Dodge is willing to go all out, they could entice them to move over to Dodge and become THE engine supplier for 6 or more teams. RPM and EGR haven't done as well as the Penske cars have done, so the grass could be a lot greener for them.

Dodge getting both Petty and Ganassi would hardly make up for losing Penske .Even if it were possible. About the only good thing you could say is they would have a few more cars on track. In my mind ,a manufacturer needs as many cars on track as possible to improve.

Sorry , didn't see your post there Fender ,we both said pretty much the same thing.

If those 3 teams go to Dodge, along with the engine building, I think it would actually be a HUGE improvement for Dodge in the future. An RPM-EGR cooperative could cherry pick Penske's engine operation for people and equiptment and be stronger right out of the gate.

I guess it all depends on how much the Penske smack woke up the folks at Fiat.

With Petty currently a second teir team ( or even lower ) in the Ford camp and the Penske organization coming in Petty definately needs to make a move to get some type of manufactuar support. I'm really suprised Petty has no manufactuar support lined up for 2013 at this point? Are they that low with Ford?
Dodge is really in a tuff spot one lame duck team this year and so far nothing in the works for next year?

Uhhhmmm... Huh?

He knows where he'll be with Ford when Penske comes onboard. I could see this playing out, and down the road Ambrose leaving to go drive for Penske.

RFR racing standing may erode some but they'll still be top dog in the ford camp,,I think.
Dodge will need to do some serious long term $$ backing to lure top teams to them. I hate to say it but Petty and EGR aren't exactly top teams. RCR,JGR,RFR, aren't going to switch brands anytime soon. IMHO of course.:)

I don't think Hendrick, Stewart Haas, MWR,and Penske are moving to Dodge either .So there isn't anyone left , is there?

So who are the top teams that Dodge might try to lure?

Petty would be a start, they need a team. Just for the sake of argument though, how long is JGR's contract with Toy**a? I only say this cause it seems they want to build their own motors and have lost a little bit since they've stopped. I'm sure Dodge doesn't have the amount $$$ that would take and I don't believe it'd ever happen. Just a thought.

Another reason for petty to go dodge is for namesake with he new car. The challenger may not be a superbee, but......

Again , for the sake of argument , might MWR contest JGR for top dog at Toyota ?

MWR has improved, I don't think they're a JGR yet, but they're getting closer. I think JGR has loses some ground by not building there own motors also though.

This may end the JGR speculation and narrow Dodges choices:

JGR close to extension with Toyota: Joe Gibbs Racing plans to sign a long-term extension with Toyota within the next month, ending any speculation it could move to Dodge. "We're working on that," JGR president J.D. Gibbs told ESPN.com on Sunday after Denny Hamlin's victory at Kansas Speedway. "We'll be with Toyota for a long time to come." Dodge has been looking for a team to anchor its 2013 program since Penske Racing announced earlier this year it would leave the manufacturer for Ford next season. JGR, since its contract with Toyota is up after this season and because the organization has the infrastructure to build its own engines, became a natural target. Gibbs said that is not a consideration (ESPN)(4-23-2012)

That'd end it MWR's contract is also up at the end of the year.

Dodge has'nt made a move yet and it's getting late!

Dodge says nothing finalized on 2013 teams: Three months after its NASCAR future was thrown into disarray by Penske Racing's impending departure to Ford, Dodge still seems without a firm plan for Sprint Cup in 2013. Recent reports have linked the manufacturer to an IndyCar team [Andretti Autosport] moving into Cup and suggested Dodge could make an announcement in two weeks at Michigan International Speedway. But a Dodge executive said in a Wednesday statement to USA Today Sports that nothing has been finalized. Aside from not having any teams in its 2013 lineup, Dodge also hasn't settled on an engine builder. The manufacturer could cut a deal to keep receiving motors from Penske's shop or could start its own engine room. Current Cup teams without a manufacturer deal for next year include Richard Petty Motorsports, Furniture Row Racing and Front Row Motorsports. Furniture Row and RPM declined to comment. Front Row general manager Jerry Freeze told USA Today Sports his team had informal talks with Dodge "but nothing of substance" since the March 1 announcement of Penske's switch to Ford. Time is growing short on a decision because of NASCAR's switch to a new model next year. The car's bodies will require new templates and pieces, and the team is planning to build chassis starting Oct. 1, several weeks earlier than in past seasons.(USA Today)(5-31-2012)

The STP commercial the King did with all Dodges was interesting.

Petty back to Dodge is what the brand needs, but there sure a ton of details to work out. I don't see anyone moving over for just a 3 year commitment from Dodge, which is all they offered Penske, and Roger owns a couple thousand Dodge dealerships. It's going to be odd when they offer some smaller outfit 5 years of support. They played poker with Roger and lost big time.

Dodge is so far behind, it would be a mistake for Petty to go back there. Remember, Penske and Arrington are the only people building Dodge engines. Penske won't be doing that any more and when's the last time an Arrington engine won a Cup race? They'd have to start their own engine program and they're not in the position to do that.

Dodge buys Penske's engine program and goes the same route as Toyota......IF Roush and Yates can agree on an engine deal with Penske.

I am betting there is a deal already done. It's just a matter of making the announcement.

There are a couple of new manufacturers not yet involved taking a serious look. One has already submitted an engine for approval.

You mean new brands to the series ? Would they have their sights set on attracting existing teams ? Because pickins are slim . Or maybe building a new one like Red Bull did ? Any thoughts , Rusty ?

In order to have an engine you must first order parts. The kind of parts you wouldn't ordinarily try to make yourself.

Excerpt from a piece written by Peter De Lorenzo in January 25th Autoextremist:

..."And will the competing manufacturers - Chevrolet, Chrysler, Toyota and most likely another import manufacturer to be named later - have cars designed to take advantage of NASCAR's new "Big Picture" thinking as well? Yes, but we'll have to wait and see if they're as aggressively striking as the new NASCAR Fusion."...

Oh, joy. Dodge can't find anyone to race their new 2013 car, and now another manufacturer is trying to come in?

I really hope Petty goes with Dodge next year. If he does, his drivers might get more attention and popularity for being the only Dodge drivers. It would be a real shame to not see the new Dodge cars on track next year competing with everyone else's new cars.
