Pocono Raceway Pre-Race thread

I think the 19 is clicking but I don't know if Truex is driving with an edge, as you say. He's always struck me as a guy who is always as good as the car's best, but never better. Super reliable. He's just doing his job.

He's no more dangerous this year than any other years they've had championship winning speed, imo.

He's just chill, confident in his team, and does his job reliably

I hear you....and when the car is right, nobody is faster IMO--but the car has to be right. I don't think he carries a car. Pit crew these days has to be right as well. I sense a little difference this year, however. Based on his post race comments Monday, I think he is driving with house money....he is at peace with walking away. That's the edge IMO.

Back in early March, I told my boss I was retiring at the end of the year. It's so much easier to show up, do your job, and overlook the BS when the clock is ticking. I'm NOT saying MTJ is gone, just that he knows he can walk when he wants to. That brings so much peace of mind.

I told my boss the same thing right before our season started. My stress level is halve what it usually is knowing I am about done.

I think that is the critical mix.....a burst of energy knowing that the BS will soon go away....enough passion to keep going....and a swagger to walk out on top. Carl wanted that so badly....MTJ could get it.

ARCA race postponed to 8:30 AM tomorrow. Wow who could’ve seen that coming? Starting after 6:00 at a track with no lights in the middle of summer storm season.

I think 35 of them were cryin last week, he wasnt one of them

In your experiences don't most drivers whine and cry a lot?

I respect the drivers and the racers for the life long entertainment they have provided to me. But isn't it their job to never be satisfied and to be uncompromising in their search for more speed. Constant complaining and criticism is a prerequisite imo.

Incessantly. I have had a few that didnt say a lot but most would vent the whole race but you would over look it. Its just stress. You wouldnt believe who was the quietest.

I remember a late 80s or 90s All Pro/ American 200 lapper at GPS when one the drivers basically freaked out the whole race. It it had been any worse I would have thought he was watching a horror movie through windsheild.

It was a guilty laugh for sure. Racing isnt easy especially when you are overwhelmed in a 30 plus car pack zooming around a half mile. I never figured out who the driver was that I was listening too. But that racer like so many others had probably busted his ass and scraped everything together that he had just to get there. It probably wasn't just the race stress but the sum of all his ambitions that was on the line against some great talent and better equipment.

Still the same I have never heard anything quite like that driver loosing it, and I could not help quietly laughing my way through that race.

Okay the curiosity has got me, who was the quietest?

Just a wild guess but Petty kept a wet rag in his mouth, it probabably kept his mouth closed some of the time.

Was he running like crap? That story brought me back to a race , cant remember where but driver and crew chief argued all day until finally the CC told him to drive it or park it so he promptly came down pit road and put it behind the wall lol. Wasnt a Cup race, it was a Super Late Model race, maybe Nashville

I was never certain of the exact driver, he couldn't have been near the front I would figured it out in that case.

This season cannot end soon enough. That was going to be a good lap

On the bright side he didn't back it into the wall. I do hate that simply towing these things can potentially cause that much damage

Mr Excitement, Jimmy Spencer. He barely spoke but when he did he was calm, I do remember he jumped my ass one time and told me to "do my job and he'll drive the car" which I thought was strange because I didnt know what he was talking about.
I recall watching Mr. E. get a lap back the hard way at ... Charlotte? and his spotter telling him something like, "Jimmy Spencer, you are one hard-charging son of a bitch!"

Any chance that was you?

Pole #3 for Willy B.

I'm not sure, I called him a lot of things ;) but seriously I think that might have been Mike Calinoff or Bigboy

Yeah, I didnt really expect you to remember one casual comment out of your career. Just wondering. Thanks.
Thats ok I dont mind at all. There was a clip they played of me and Spencer years ago from the Bristol night race. This was before they changed the track to progressive banking, Jimmy was having a hard time getting by Jeff Green who was driving for Petty in the 43 stacking up everybody behind him and instead of just punting him Jimmy got a good run off of 2 and jumped to his outside going in to 3 and out of no where Gordon went with him at the same time and moved to Jimmys outside I jumped on it quick and told Jimmy "3 wide in and out"! and somehow we all made it through the corner and off of 4 then a caution came out for a wreck behind us, well as we were riding around under caution Spencer keyed the radio and said 'Johnny when you called 3 wide I thought you were kidding and then I caught the 24 out of the corner of my eye that crazy son of a bitch!" 3 wide at Bristol at that time was unheard of, it shocked us all and almost gave me a heart attack. Gordons spotter came over under caution and apologized and said he had no idea he was gonna do that, I said no $**** I didnt see it coming either! We both looked at each other and shook our heads but thats what made that guy so damn good, he did things most wouldnt even think about much less do.
