I think consistency is still important, even for race winners. For the pre chase champions it was all about consistency (they'd take a good points day if they couldn't win). I have no problem with a non winner taking the championship. A long season depends on consistency. Consistency is the true merit of a team.
Of course... Brian France knows it, Mike Helton knows it... They got too big for their britches when Britney Spears was singing national anthems and TV ratings were through the roof. The beauty of any individual race and a season long championship is the horses that come flying out of the gate vs the horses that peak late. Late race bunch up the field cautions and chases for the championship taint both.
