Possible New rules coming for All-Star Race

The 'fan change' remains in effect. It only started with the All Star Race.

Beginning with Saturday night’s Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, teams can no longer use brake-cooling fans. The fans put air on brake systems for cooling purposes, but they also generate additional downforce. The change goes into effect for the All-Star Race but also will be used for the rest of the Sprint Cup schedule.
I stand corrected. Gracias mi amigo!

I think I heard yesterday on Dave Moody's show that the fans the teams were using to "cool brakes" were pretty bad ass fans and were being used to pull air out from under the cars to create more down force. Something like a hundred+ pounds of down force generated (maybe more?). This gave the big teams a significant advantage as the less funded teams were not spending the money (a few grand per fan). Teams actually went to NASCAR and asked them to outlaw them so they could save money.

The Chaparral 2J was called the sucker car because it had fans to give it more down force. If you want to cheat - go big.

Complete rear end housing skewed to the right relative to chassis center- line. Affects chassis and aerodynamics. Still permitted by rule. Two different things.

So the NASCAR Radio "talent" is mistaken to suggest that skew is eliminated with the 0 toe?

I didn't know they said that. How unfortunate. It's 0.3 degrees on one side and 0.6 on the other .. very small amounts of toe. If the rear end housing is square, you get tire scrub and a little help turning the car - that's it. The car is skewed when the rear end wants to go right while the car is going straight because the right side wheelbase is longer than the left.

When the COT appeared, Larry Mac spent the next 6 months talking about coil binding in the front suspension. That setup was designed out of the new cars and wasn't physically possible.

Supposedly all the front brake fans are gone. I doubt that very much. No mention of the cabin fans, 2 or 3 of which were removed for last week's novelty races.

How many brake rotors exploded today?

Knaus told his driver to turn his front fans off during Saturday night's race at Daytona.

How often does a driver step on the brakes in a plate race? Five or six times to hit pit road under green, if he's lucky. Otherwise the Big One causes him to jam them down for several seconds. Either way, I doubt brake cooling is the biggest issue in a crew chief's mind at a plate race. Heck, I'm surprised Chad installed them; leave 'em out and save the weight.

I agree.

However ...

There must be other fans to cool other things besides brakes. I heard a new ****pit fan was permitted at Daytona to cool the foot area, for example. Or maybe these were fans to cool the overworked brake cooling fans which used to be there but then got outlawed.
