The NASCAR Cup Series is in the Midwest this week for its annual second race of the season at Kansas Speedway, which is also the second race of the Semi Final Round Of 8 in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Playoffs. An invitation by a playoff drive to the Championship 4 was won in the previous race, this week’s race becomes ever so important. Reality seeps in for our playoff drivers with one race left in the Semi Final after this stop at Kansas, who will earn an their invitation to the Championship Race by winning under the Fall Midwest skies of Kansas Speedway?
 
Some of us could make a fortune with wishful thinking if it paid well.
 
Hamlin's crew chief

After the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota had been loaded into the team’s hauler, Denny Hamlin’s crew chief made his thoughts clear on the advantage Kyle Larson’s team had winning Sunday’s race and securing the first spot in next month’s championship race.

“Quote it and write it down,” Gabehart told NBC Sports at Texas Motor Speedway. “It is a huge advantage. They are the best race team of the year, statistically. We are a step behind them. Kyle Larson is the most talented race car driver I have ever been on this planet to see. That’s a fact.”

Daniels about the Hendrick/Elliott effort

Daniels noted after Sunday’s race at Texas how much of a priority it is to get Elliott in the title event.

“I think as a company, now we’ve got to put our focus on making sure we get (Elliott) to Phoenix, as well, but our job is still going to go win races every week, if we can, and that’s our goal,” Daniels said.

Daniels also noted the advantage his team would have over the other three title teams.

Phoenix will mark the first time in more than two months that Cup teams will practice and qualify before the race. Daniels said that means the haulers with the team cars will have to leave each shop a couple of days earlier than normal. That’s fewer days to work on those cars before they are transported.

Since I’m not allowed to say anything negative. I’ll just say go NASCAR. Everything’s great, all tracks are awesome, everything’s great. NASCAR is perfect and nothing ever needs to change ever. Everything’s great.
 
Alex Weaver had an interesting conversation with Dylan Smith and Bob Pockrass on Back Seat Driver about if Hendrick should put all of their attention on trying to help the 9 team make the final four since they have not won on an oval yet this year. They make a point that if the 5 wins it will at least keep someone else from clinching another spot in the final four. I have a feeling that all hands will be on deck at the shop preparing the best car they can for the 9 team and I expect the 5, 24, and 48 teams will help as much as they can with on track information once the race has started.

It isn't good that Elliott hasn't been able to win on an oval this year that is all that there are left. The way it looks, Larson might have a better chance of shutting out most of the teams keeping them away from the automatic transfer and instead they would have to race into the final by points.
 
Axalta gobbled up Raptor recently. Raptor is a very tough coating they use in PU truck beds and is widely used by the 4 wheel off road crowd

They won't use the real Raptor paint for Kansas. It would work pretty good for Martinsville though

Storyline – While grouped with “smooth” tracks, Kansas will wear tires: While the Goodyear tire set-up for Kansas Speedway is similar to what is run at some of the smoother track surfaces on the NASCAR circuit – Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Michigan International Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway – teams will see some tire wear this weekend. Kansas was repaved back in 2012 and is subject to the hot summers and cold winters of Kansas, which has aged the track over time. Teams can expect to see approximately a second-and-a-half of fall-off in lap times over the course of a fuel run, so tire management can be a bit of a factor.
“Kansas poses an interesting challenge for teams in that it is still considered a relatively smooth track surface, yet it has begun to wear tires over the last several races at the track,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “We work hard to design our tread compounds to match up with a track surface and we definitely have a compound, specifically on the right-side, that will also introduce wear at Kansas. We just ran this right-side tire at Texas last week, and Cup teams ran this same set-up at Kansas earlier in the season, so they are very familiar with what to expect. The wear we get at Kansas is a good thing. When tires shed rubber as they wear, heat is allowed to dissipate through the tread and run cooler and at a more optimal grip level.”
Notes – Cup returns to Kansas on existing tire set-up; change to Xfinity right-side tire compared to fall ‘20: Teams in both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same tire set-up at Kansas this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Cup teams ran at this track last October and again this May . . . for Xfinity, they ran this left-side code with a different right-side at Kansas last October . . . compared to what Xfinity ran last season, this right-side tire features a compound change for more grip . . . this left-side tire code was run on the Charlotte oval and at Nashville, while this right-side code has been run at Las Vegas, Michigan and Texas in 2021 . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Kansas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
