PRIME broadcast: now that’s a winner!

Didn't need them back then.Or now. We knew how to drive back then, and now.
It does have factory A/C & AM/FM Stereo..Rare for a 1969 Fairlane 500 fastback.
This is my mindset as well. My wife's Honda has all the driver assist stuff, and for the most part, it is just an annoying back seat driver to me. I prefer driving the 2012 everyday beater without any of the driver assist tech.

But on the other hand, I am happy that she has all the driver assist tools, and she loves them. It also reinforces some good habits like using the turn signals for every lane change

I like backing up with my own eyes rather than using the cameras. I don't want to become dependent on using the cameras rather than my own depth perception. But I will confess to using the backup camera when it comes to knowing where to stop for the final parking position in my truck. The full-size 4x4 Silverado crew cabs size and height need help, but it still feels like I am cheating. Thankfully, it doesn't have the lane assist, etc.

I attended a BMW driving experience recently and had to adapt to the paddle shifters. I have really tried to avoid that. I want to manually change the gears with a real shifter and use the clutch, and I think I would lose my mind if something tried to tell me when to shift.
I love the feel of sensing those things, it's what I like about driving, I don't want some electronics taking that away from me.

TVs and soundbars are cheap for a reason.

TVs that don't come with all that crap installed and don't connect to the internet on their own are anywhere from 2x to 5x as much as a SMART TV.

The one good thing about the POS TV I have now is that it's not a SMART TV. And I might not ever buy a 4K TV again because I don't want that crap.

Save yourself the money and by the Smart TV. Nobody says you have to connect it to your WiFi. Don't enter the network ID or password. Better yet, enter fake ones.

Long link but informative.

You can see a huge difference in picture, even on a native FS1 720p picture, in some of the cameras.

NASCAR is just so much more complex to cover because you have dozens of cameras. Whereas you might have a couple dozen, if that, for an NFL game.

Make it easier and lose that one that does the fish-eye pan of the tracks from top to bottom. Also toss those that just show the cars going by at ground level; they show us nothing about how the race is going. Toss in most of the cameras that show drivers sitting in the car, and the rear bumper cams too. And for gods' sakes, why are we still seeing foot cams when nobody has heel-toed the brake and gas in years?

And get off my damn lawn!

Some of these TVs now have to be registered and activated to use. And I’m just too lazy to change my WiFi password after setting something up.

The way everyone is charging extra for 4K content makes it not worth it to buy a 4K TV anyway. I’d rather have a 65” 1080p dumb TV.

And now they’re taking away Dolby Atmos, so I might get rid of my sound system and downgrade to an early-2000s surround system.

Easily the most irritating thing about streaming. Everything about the business model makes innovation meaningless.

1080p looks much better on a 1080p TV and MOST people aren’t watching much of anything in 4K.

We have different criteria for our systems. I've never used anything other than the built-in speakers, and couldn't tell you what picture resolution I'm looking at to save my life. As long as I get sound and a color picture, and the graphics fit on the screen, I'm good.

But even then, you still have to have a lot more cameras just for the basics because you’re covering like 2,000 times the amount of area as you are with other sports.

I agree with most of it. I like the rear cam but it only needs to be used when there is a tough pass and you want to see if the car passed is going to have close contact or contact with the rear/bumper of the other. That is a cool action shot. Turning it on watching a car disappear isn't the greatest. Sometimes there is a good shot of the wrecks with the rear cam, those are decent.

Tweakers will tweak. When resolution gets to a certain threshold, you are just trying to impress yourself. The difference isn't that great for the return.

I'll stick to the lower ratings is a fact story and that is because of the fragmented media choices. I could go as far as using Indycar's pretty fantastic doubling from last year's climb because people know where to find the races. Easy peasy.
The FOX deal has certainly been a boon to IndyCar’s viewership so far. But they also transitioned from a model where NBC was putting an increasing number of races on USA and even Peacock after initially having a balance of the races on NBC proper. Cable TV is and has been on the decline for years, and Peacock is nowhere near the subscription levels of Prime Video. Prime Video is uniquely positioned to earn pretty similar total viewership to cable events, and draw a much larger number of younger viewers.

An interesting reflection of where cable TV is now. The Stanley Cup Final just wrapped up and had the exact same matchup (Edmonton/Florida) as last year. Last year’s series was on ABC, this year’s was on TNT and truTV. The 2024 series averaged 4.2M and this year’s 2.5M - a 40% drop with everything else held equal.

If there is anything to be upset with it’s that FOX and NBC shifted the balance of their races to a platform (FS1/USA) that can’t hold a candle to what it used to be a decade ago when FS1 and NBCSN were really just taking off.

Bla blah blah. Prime video once again did not draw total viewership numbers and the but we had younger viewers doesn't mean squat to me. I don't care about cables declining viewership. I get cable TV stations the same way I get streaming, thru the internet. You guys should be getting paid by the networks.

It does to team sponsors and network advertisers.

Does anyone know if network contracts are tied to the demographics? If I can think of that, I'm sure contract lawyers on both sides of the relationship already have.

The races and NFL will all be eventually streamed. The human race will fall under a great depression and stop procreating.
There will not be any babies for the next generation or even anybody to read this thread.
Nascar and the NFL can at least take comfort from squeezing every possible dollar they could get out of the last generation.

We all gonna die.

But there will at least be great for Country Music. They will write some great sad songs about the state of affairs for the common man. But you will have to pay for an APP to hear it...

More people watched Mexico and Nashville on Prime than did Bristol on FS1. The total viewership difference between the two platforms has been marginal at best, with the added benefit that new viewers are being introduced to NASCAR.

Good to know I got something to look forward to . . . :dirtbike:

I don't understand how cable ratings can be so much lower unless people just didn't know where to find it this year. Many people still have a cable, satellite, or streaming package with TNT. I watched a good bit of it this year because of prefer TNT's coverage over ESPN's, which is typical of most sports these days.

Sound is important to me. I’m not an audiophile but I do want some good bass and good dialogue clarity. The only way you’re getting both is with a subwoofer and, at the least, a mid-grade soundbar.

My soundbar and rear speakers run Atmos which is amazing, but I’m thinking about selling it (since I don’t have a 4K TV anymore) and buying an older surround system.

NASCAR should not have signed this deal with FOX and NBC. And signing with WB Discovery was incredibly stupid.

The handwriting has been on the wall for a few years now and they did this anyway.

USA is now part of Versant and has an unlikely future. The future of TNT Sports is very grim, so grim that industry experts think it’ll **** down in 2028.

FOX has been promising streaming for two years now. They’re launching something this fall, hopefully, but I really think they’re too late to the game. And I’m not sure how long FOX’s cable side can stay afloat. They’re better positioned than most thanks to the Fox Nothing Channel but still… the writing is on the wall.

The one bright spot has been NASCAR Productions and the way they’ve managed to take these resources and produce an A+ broadcast.

If I was FOX, I wouldn’t worry about replacing Artie Kempner. I’d just let NASCAR produce the broadcasts.

My primary gripe with USA Network is that they rush off the air to return to SVU reruns and tell you to watch postrace on the same Peacock app that has every episode of SVU on it.

Not sure why they haven't changed the name of the network from USA to L&O.
Sound is important to me.
Having hearing aids takes the quality down a few notches no matter how good it is. Beats not hearing it at all, or having to crank it up too loud for Darling Bride.

Why I don't have a 'smart speaker' or devices that are controlled solely by voice, and why I disable voice recognition on everything else. Companies already have enough sources of info about me.

Meh. I have one of those Chinese robot vacuums, an Alexa to play SiriusXM when I'm down in the basement, plus a smartphone and smart TVs and smart whatever else. If they want my info, they can have it. I have nothing to hide, and they all make my life easier

So we say goodbye to the Prime broadcast team, the best package overall in a long time. I will miss it greatly, although some of the same folks will be on the next 5 TNT editions. The production quality, picture quality, fan casual approach and pre/post race fun, just great. Keselowski was on post race and talked about how much he enjoyed their work and would miss it.

I just want one central location for practice, qualifying, and the race. Prime provided that. They also dished out some premium content on the side with the Earnhardt and Garage 56 docs. Give em a full season as far as I'm concerned. I wish they could at least double what they had this year but the deal is only for 5.

TNT coverage is coming out of the same building so I hope it will be as good

The best part of Prime's coverage was post race. I like the unrushed feel, the booth personalities joining the stage, even the beer cheers were a nod to the fan base. Cousin Carl turned out to be a good talking head, and Corey surprised me with how well he did (those Stacking Pennies shoes must have warmed him up). I still could use about 20% less Steve Letart and 20% more Junior.

The bar has been set higher, NBC you got next.

Monkey see monkey do.
I dunno, the production chimps at Fox haven't picked up much in the last decade. Their scoring pylons for NASCAR and IndyCar are slow to update this season, and they STILL haven't figure out how to time pit stops. But at least we get driver cartoons.

Considering Prime overpaid to Nascar over a billion dollars for their races they took from Fox, I wonder if NBC will up their game also when their turn comes or heaven forbid, will the nerds revolt if they can't find a comparable concrete Carl or a babe with a tan like Danielle Trotta. It is going to take a reach.

Prime was basically NBC...

Yep.

NASCAR Productions and NBC Sports.

TNT is NASCAR Productions too.

And NBC’s coverage is fine.

FOX is terrible but Artie Kempner has left for ESPN, and honestly, the last race FOX had (Wilkesboro) was an improved telecast.

The building in Dallas, Concord or Atlanta?
The olden days of 10 cameras, 1 production truck and a Satellite dish truck are long gone..
Simpler times, but not as exciting as now

Really don't see what everybody sees in Diffey. But whatever, the guy isn't the easiest to understand. Burton and Latarteee. the two worst gerbils. I hope they don't carry over the POV in car cameras staring at Hamlin sitting there mostly, or some other assorted driver, it's a nothing shot.

Kempner was at his peak in the early 2000's..Innovative, and a good eye for live action. 12 Emmys attest to that. But, time takes its toll...
