Quicken Loans 400 at michigan race thread

TNT doesn't bother to mention Patrick finishing in 13th. LOL

Danica 13th....Being conservative paid off (didn't want to say being slow....lol)..good job

Kenseth's pit with one can worked, can't believe Chad screwed up with two. Chad gets an honorable mention in the bonehead thread

I enjoy listening to you all...have a safe week all...I plan on doing the straight line thing next weekend at Epping NH

Decent race, I don't like Biff but glad JJ didn't win. My roommate is a diehard fan and he always wants the best car to win lol that's boring.

Good Job by Danica. First time I've said that all year. If she learns the corners better and restarts, she'll get better cause the car is ahead of her right now.

Wow... just wow... when I saw Joeys CC gave him 4 tires ....I'm still pissed I think he could have won this one but stupid 4 tires?! Really?! Jackass...

4 tires never worked. JJ probably wins the race if he doesn't take 4 when he did.. Joey might have but he would have needed the lead on the restart.

Didn't watch but the last 20 laps or so, but the comments on the sheer amount of commercial almost mirror the same complaints during the Fox coverage. We all know there's a lot of commercials on TV. But you can blame NASCAR for that, because the ridiculous price they charge the networks for coverage. They gotta recoup somehow.

Some complaint, different network. :yawn

I said all year it would be worse with TNT.

But it the same. The exact same, with the exact same complaints.

You can say the problem is NASCAR (and part of it is - NASCAR did spend years and years discouraging networks from running "Side By Side" coverage) but it's the networks. ESPN and FOX spend far less time at commercial than TNT and ESPN airs half their commercials "Non Stop". NBC paid a fortune for F1 and does side-by-side.

NBC paid a large chunk of change for NHL as well - and then lost millions of dollars during the lockout. They could easily cut to commercial in the middle of Sudden Death Overtime, possibly even missing the game winning goal, in the Stanley Cup Final and they'd be more than justified. But they stick with the action - staying on the air for 20-30 consecutive minutes at a time during a five hour game.

NASCAR is the only sport that has this problem. There are things outside of the network's control but there's stuff that is in their control. FOX is notorious for staying on air without interruption during caution periods and then using up their commercials during green flag racing. And TNT is notorious for cutting to commercial right in the middle of an exciting race and, when they do miss something because they're at commercial, it's fairly common for TNT to never show a replay or even mention what happened.

Eh comparing other sports coverage to auto racing is just not fair. Nascar and other forms of motorsports are nonstop, unless there is a red flag. I've never missed a pitch in baseball, a play in football, a basket in the NBA or game action in hockey because those sports have set breaks. The only way Nascar could be shown in full would be set caution flags.

I would love for Nascar to have side by side all race but I'm guessing the sponsors wouldn't be too happy with that.

I compared NASCAR to IndyCar and F1 as well. The hockey comparison is fair - as are comparisons to soccer. American broadcast networks can and often do go 20-30 minutes at a time during hockey games without interruption and often times go over 45 minutes without interruption during soccer games. I watched A LOT of soccer during the Olympics on NBC Sports Network and they never interrupted for commercials. I watched the hockey game the other night on NBC - the one that went on for six periods - and there was never an interruption during Sudden Death Overtime.

Realistically, in other sports, there are situations that come up where television networks could interrupt the action for a commercial and not get crucifid for it. It would've been perfectly acceptable for NBC to do it the other night since they lost something to the tune of $10 million this year from the lockout (that's not including what NBC lost when NBCSN lost over 750,000 viewers a night for five months). If there was a 10 minute drive in a football game, broadcasters sometimes elect to show one 30 second commercial (even then, that doesn't always happen). In IndyCar and F1, the networks only spend four minutes an hour with full screen commercials.

In short, NASCAR is THE only major league sport where the fans miss action, and a significant amount of it, due to commercials.

NASCAR's partly to blame. When NBC first came to NASCAR, they were doing side-by-side and were going to do it in 2001 but NASCAR discouraged it. The idea came up again when ESPN signed their contract to return to NASCAR coverage. In 2006, there was a lot of talk about side-by-side coverage, since ESPN was doing the same thing for IndyCar, and it was again NASCAR that killed it - even going as far as to make false statements claiming IndyCar pays ESPN for airtime (not true). Hell, FOX even does side-by-side coverage for baseball, college football and UFC.

But now, FOX and ESPN have both done side-by-side coverage. Even TNT's done "Wide Open" commercial free coverage (something they've said they probably won't do this year). And ESPN's ratings skyrocketed when they adopted side-by-side NASCAR coverage and smartphone streaming.

I know Brian France is all jacked up because NASCAR's making bank on the TV contracts - with FOX paying more for a long-term deal so NASCAR can be the staple for FOX Sports 1 and the increasing likelihood that NBC Sports is going to pay out of their ass to outbid ESPN... but NASCAR's going to have to convince the television partners that fans missing just about everything because of commercials is bad for the sport. I doubt he cares though.

I can sit on Twitter and get a more complete picture of the race than television provides. It's even worse with this TNT network thinking EVERYBODY sits on Twitter during the races and knows what's going on so they don't need to tell us what's going on. Um, when I watch a race, I like to sit back with a cold beer and watch the race - not watch a computer screen. Unfortunately, TNT's left me with no choice.

Another huge problem with the television coverage, and it's much worse on TNT but it's really bad on FOX as well, is how scripted the coverage is.

FOX took a real "stick and ball" approach with "VISA Race Break", "AT&T Mid-Race Report" and so on. NASCAR doesn't have intermissions and halftime - don't treat it like it does. The result is, they end up missing a lot of on track action because of a scripted halftime show and scripted intermission reports. TNT and that "Through The Field", "Fresh off the Wire" and all that nonsense is even worse.

I just wonder where they all draw the line.. When do we get real coverage back? I watch F1 coverage and then NASCAR coverage.. The difference is embarrassing.

Maybe it's because I was real young, but I feel like ABC/ESPN speedworld coverage of the 90's was and should be the standard, Bob Jenkins was the man. Adam Alexander is the worst excuse for a commentator ever. He's horrible on Speed Center. Who the hell decided to put him in the booth?

As far as commercials, long story short, if all these a-holes respected the fanbase that made their millions, they would not **** on us to make an extra buck any chance they get. You can't be struggling, show me some racing.

ESPN's coverage has improved greatly since 2007. I don't remember who else was a member then but it was so bad that I quit watching NASCAR altogether and got all my information from the forums. No postrace coverage. Missing race endings. Coverage of races not starting until close to halfway because of college football postgame shows and reruns of tennis matches. Races jumping from ESPN Classic to ESPN2 to ABC to ESPN. And it wasn't just NASCAR, it was all their sports coverage. And the race coverage itself was pretty terrible.

In fact, that's the whole reason John Daly's blog came about.

The good thing was that ESPN has improved ever since.

FOX and TNT, on the other hand, seem to get worse and worse every year. TNT is pretty embarrassing. They might be worse than ESPN actual race coverage was in 2007 and that's saying something. I've seen college students throw together better broadcasts - and that's no bull****.

I watch a lot of sports - not just NASCAR, but football, baseball, hockey, college sports, soccer and so on... even amateur sporting events on cable. NASCAR on TNT, right now, is the worst sports telecast on television. And that's a shame because they actually do a really good job with the MLB Playoffs and NCAA March Madness.

One of my biggest complaints is listening to someone like Kyle Petty tell us what drivers should do to win races. This is a guy who hasn't won a race since 1995, and hasn't been on track period since 2008. What could possibly make his opinions relevant in 2013? It's one thing to chat on here about racing and share our opinions, it's an entirely different matter when you're on TV in front of millions of people.

Any commentator ex-racer is likely to have not driven in awhile but yeah, I can't help but take his words with a grain of salt.

I just read it was because they didn't know if they would have enough gas. Which would have been true because his team mate ran out on the last lap or so... Great run tho had a top 3 car all day. That wins comin. I like that I can be frustrated with a 9th place finish now. LOL last year any top 10 was great. Now anything but a win or at least a top 5 or 10 is terrible in my eyes. That team is even performing better than I really thought they would by this time. Without the penalty would be 8th or 9th in points... still only 14th tied for 13th only 12 points out of the top 10 after his 5th straight top 10 including 2 top 5s in there. Sorry bout the ramble I just see my predictions comin to light sooner than I thought. Some ppl on here are just waitin for the big I told you so lol. :p What a great race though Im glad Ford won.
