Rate the Race: 2013 Sprint Cup all-star race

Didn't live up to all the hype I was hearing all week, imo.
Yeah, we saw a little rubbin' and racin' here and there throughout the race, but that was mostly following the restarts of each segment.

I thought we'd see checkers or wreckers type racing in the last 10 lap shootout, but it was not to be.

I gotta say, I enjoyed qualifying for this race much more than the race itself.

But I won't let this event damper my enthusiasm for next week's races.
Bring on the World 600!
 
teams got zilch.....fer 4 segments a' racin.... all came down ta last pit stop.

Started off fun to watch but the racing didnt matter as it came down to a pit stop. Fun to watch Kurt race as hard as he did. Too much controversy on the lining up if the final pit stop and not enough time to race it out at the end.
 
7 I thought it was pretty good, but faded at the last. they were racing hard and a lot of cars got tweaked a bit. not having a chance to fix them before the final race messed things up for some teams.
 
i never liked kurt....but he deserved win tonite.

maybe swanson will come on board now ?

6 ..... like past two years, it didn't live up to the hype we expect in an All Star race. I was hoping for a fender banging finish like the one between Kurt Busch and Ricky Craven at Darlington.

It had its moments. They were racy for a few laps right after restarts but then the field thinned out pretty quickly.

-I think most would score better with a different winner.
- I thought Johnson wheeled the car pretty good in the last segment. He ran away from Kahne on the straights and beat the side draft. It wasnt the greatest race but there are some redeeming qualties.
-The old school unlimited qualifying pit road speeds the best part of the weekend.

If they stone the national anthem singer, I will raise my score to a nine.

Of course I'm gonna say 10. I mentioned in another thread that it seemed like NASCAR was trying to keep the pit crew challenge alive in their own strange way because of the rules for qualifying and the race and it seems I was kinda right. So not only did Jimmie win the All-Star race, but the 48 crew won what I would call "the new" pit crew challenge...AGAIN!!! Way to go 48!
 
I'm a 48 fan, but I gotta say only a 6. One of the Busch bros deserved to win. Plus, it sucked that the race came down to a pit stop. It was also very jumbled coming down for the fial pit stop getting in order -- I truly belive JJ got a unfair advantage by coming in maybe 6th or 7th not 11th. On the positive -- JJ won, it was better than last year, and there was some hard racing.

After all the talk about doing whatever it takes to win, we saw the same old 1.5 roll around.
 
5, enjoyed how racey everyone was for a minute but the result is honestly about what I expected.. No one cares about the race, purse, any of it anymore.. Past few years have been lackluster.
 
I will give the race an 8 and qualifying a 10. I hope they don't change a thing for qualifying.

This race never quite lives up to the hype. That said, as ChexOrWrex and others here have alluded to, I thought the racing was pretty good until the lackluster final segment where they all got strung out and ran pretty much single file. I probably would have given it an 8 if not for that, even with a Johnson win. Probably. ;)

What killed the last segment, to me, was the extremely short 10 lap distance and the mandatory pit stop. It sounds really good on paper and coming from the announcers' mouths - throw the pit strategy out the window and have a shootout for a million bucks, boys! (LOL. I can hear DW saying it as I type it.)

In reality, though, it just makes everything come down to that final pitstop and the restart...which, now that I think about it, is exactly how things normally go whenever there's a late caution or a GWC. Except, y'know, without any of the strategy which can make the last few laps of the race more exciting/interesting. As some of you pointed out, there's not even time to take that one final swing at the car to try and get the handling right. If you do that, you're restarting at the rear of the field with 10 to go - forget about it. It reduces the pit stop to nothing more than a glorified pit crew challenge, which I think makes it rather pointless.

One thing I will give NASCAR credit for is the average finish wrinkle they threw in this time around, which stopped us from seeing a repeat of last year, when all the segment winners dropped to the back like it was Talladega. That was ridiculous.
