Rate the Race: Atlanta

I've wanted to pick Hamlin for the last couple of weeks , this coming weekend especially , but I can't figure out where that team is at. Teams get hot ,like Logano and Montoya and Truex , but teams go cold too. Like to see how Grubb would do in a best Crew Chief poll right now .
Hamlin is hot, you should pick him every week until you have none left.

Solid 9. 0
I hope they never repave the place, tires degrade and passing happens.

8 - Good time watching this one. JJ better find that horseshoe!

He's hot alright. In the head.

I swear that guy is losing it. He's doing some wierd things in races.

At one point he slowed up on the track for some reason. Just odd.

Agreed, it is a shame. The guy is brilliant on flat tracks or was, one of the best finesse drivers around.
But it is like he has some mental demons, or some inner oppressing force to fight.

9.0

I love Atlanta, I really wished this track still had two dates. It was great to see tire strategy finally play a big factor in a race.

A while back I wasted some time on YouTube looking up some previous years wrecks. Noticed one thing - Denny was the cause of almost all of them. His weird moves didnt just start with his spine injury & pain meds. He's gotta history that I never noticed before.

In my opinion, Hamlin is overrated. Maybe I'm biased because I simply just don't like him, but I've never thought he was a top talent. Even before all the whining and general douchebagness, I wasn't all that impressed with him. He's a less talented Robby Gordon, but nobody notices because he drives great equipment and runs up front a lot.

Much better race than what I typically expect at this track, although I enjoyed the truck race more earlier in the day.

I agree with the previous poster who liked Kurt Busch passing all those cars on a restart. That was an awesome shot from the in-car camera.

The most craziest thing I took away from this race was that restart through all that speedy dry. Still don't know how everyone made it through without wrecking.
Looked like they were racing in a blizzard. Insane.

OK, so we disagree.

At a minimum, ya gotta give Hammy credit for the run he made at the Cup in 2010.

Certainly agree that he's running like crap right now.

the meds apparently aren't cutting it . . .

Don't get me wrong, Hamlin is certainly good enough to race for a contender, but he'll always be the bottom guy at JGR or any other top-tier Cup team. I think Kenseth and Busch are clearly better racers and it's not even close. Hamlin is the Ken Schrader of 1990's HMS, but with a much more annoying personality.

I had Harvick and Kurt, so it was up and down. As usual, Kurts pit slowed him down on car prep and pit work. He overdrove the car to a good finish though. I don't think I have ever seen a driver pass so many front runners at one time, amazing driving. Harvick was real good, top 5 almost all night until the last couple of pit stops and they lost the car. The track was good to race on, but terrible for restarts. Slick track and a tire that wasn't gripping the track I guess, but I hate to see such a difference in the starting lanes screw up so many good cars. 7

I've never seen that much speedy-dry left on a racetrack that was insane. I remember Harvick went through a big patch and literally hydroplaned.

This.. not a big Denny fan but the hurt back is effecting his driving and confidence.

I agree with that, but he's had speed in qualifying as of late but when the race starts, he just can't hack it.. I think it is mental and physical because of the pressure of sitting in the car for hours. Not really knowing what's wrong with the car. It's like he can't focus longer then a few laps.

He does have 22 career wins, more than some of the sport's other stars such as Dale Jr, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, etc. And this will be the first year he'll miss the Chase since coming into the sport. Yes, he's running like crap right now, and it's very possible he may never regain his old form. But, when he was good, he was one of the best in the sport. Not quite sure where the Robby Gordon comparison comes from.

He'd be top 6 or 7 on my list to make the chase next season if he would get this back problem behind him asap.
