RATE THE RACE: Kansas I

ESPN is listening to the fans. Last year alone, they promoted Allen Bestwick and introduced NASCAR Nonstop. This year, they've quit using Full Throttle and Up To Speed (which was something they imported from NBC/TNT). Time for FOX and TNT to step up as well.

This must be a sign of the coming apocolypse because I find myself agreeing with Andy - AGAIN!

Even though Allen is a total dork, he is doing a much better job in the anchor seat this time around. Having Dale and Andy with him makes for a very good announce team.

The whole Studio Host thing (on all of the networks) needs to die a horrible death. It adds NOTHING to a race broadcast.

And can we PLEASE see fewer commercial breaks during the telecasts? I know that the networks need to make money but, C'mon, Man!!

I hate when you media types take a quote out of context. Ya know what else I hate? Corvairs.

No offense, but you kinda sound like Andy today. Tone it down a little! ;)

I happen to like Corvairs! My Dad had a '64 Spyder with a factory turbocharger. Man, that was a sweet ride!!

20 years ago, my friend bought an old one. Hit a tree on the 3rd day. I'm glad he hadn't painted it yet.

The commercials are excessive. Anyone remember when TNT went to commercial with 9 laps to go at Michigan? Good grief. OR when they went to commercial, came back from commercial and went right back to commercial?

The problem I have is that almost all the commercial breaks are during green flag racing. FOX is horrible about staying on the air during cautions or only having a few commercials during 10-15 minute cautions while having an excessive number of commercials during green flag racing. During Daytona, all their "side by side" commercials were during cautions and red flags not during racing.

FOX thinks that showing who got out of the pits first is more important. Hell, they could recap that sh!t in 30 seconds and provide more green flag laps.

But they all know that people run to the kitchen or to the head during caution periods so advertisers want their spots aired during green flag periods. It makes sound business sense but makes for sh!tty TV coverage...

FOX's other problem is that they do their entire telecast from on board cameras.

I submitted a 400 word mini-essay to the Fan Council detailing why Fox's broadcast suck so bad. It was a thematically sound piece with perfect spelling and grammar. I even utilized my honers level collegiate writing skills that have served me so well over the years just because I wanted to achieve maximum impact. Obviously my efforts will be in vain but it was fun to write and if someone does indeed read it I am hoping they at least appreciate the effort and the fact that it wasn't some wild hillbilly rant fired off in all caps with no punctuation. haha

Kansas Overnight TV Ratings: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing on Fox posted a 3.7/9 on Sunday for the STP 400 from Kansas Speedway. Though that's off -20% from last year's 4.6/11 for the Talladega 400 which aired on the comparable weekend, it's off just one-tenth from last year's Kansas race which aired later in the season, and when the nationals are released, it's expected to rank as the top-rated event of the weekend. Through eight races, NASCAR Sprint Cup Racing on FOX is averaging a 4.5/9, off -8% from last year's 4.9/11.(4-23-2012)

Could Fox's horrific broadcasts be partially to blame here? I can't tell because I am in the NASCAR bubble. Do any of you have friends that are casual fans? Why don't they watch any more?

I sure hope you didn't use any run on sentences. :D

Maybe the excellent Hockey playoffs have something to do with the numbers. I DVR'd the game and switched back and forth.

It doesn't seem fair to compare Kansas to Dega.

OMG andy, pull the knife out of your thigh, and call DTV.

I DVR almost every race, I rarely ever watch live. That's mainly because I like to skip the commercials and I don't have any friends who like racing so I never have to worry about anyone spoiling the races for me.

but I'm not sure if I count in the ratings since I DVR it.

If you don't have a Nielsen box then you don't count. And I would totally DVR all the races if not for Trackpass Scanner and Hotpass. Hell, NASCAR is probably the only thing I ever watch at it's normal broadcast time. I have probably 50 hours of crap on my DVR right now.

Neilsen boxes are so outdated, they really need to come up with a better way to measure ratings.
