Rate The Race: Pocono Deuce

Yesterday, I took in the race half on tv and the rest on radio. Two completely different races. The first where little focus is outside of the top few spots. The second focused on the entire field and the battles for position all over the track. Radio is by far my preferred method for taking in the race broadcast these days. You get a lot more information on what is going on rather than the tight shots of television.

10 - I DVR'd and watched last night, rain threat made it a great race, passing, side by side, rubbing, moving, all good. They had a great shot of Kaine's car, three angles showing out the front, feet cam showing foot action when shifting and view of him driving, cool shot.
The Larson - Dillion battle was great.
Never have been a big fan of Pocono, but, this was a good one. :D

The only way that I could see them building some sort of urgency into all races is to reward them for specific points throughout a race. If only it were truly back to a points system along with were the winner was rewarded with a far higher percentage over all another spots. The Chase ruins my scenario but if they could reward bonus points for the 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% & the ultimate of bonus points for wining, they'd have a reason to charge hard throughout the race. The Chase in it's current format does little to create urgency among the field IMO.

Those are some really good ideas and it was nice under the old system where every race meant something to every driver. I think a better system could have been accomplished using the classic point system and some tweaks you mentioned. BTW, I can remember if I gave you major kudo's for the set up you have in the back of your property but it is outstanding.

At one point yesterday during the TV broadcast they were talking about the good battles in 13th-16th place and showed it for 2 seconds and that was it.

I liked the Larson Dillion battle too and I never get tired of seeing Kyle on restarts as even if he doesn't have a car to win the race with he still gets great restarts. I could watch him and Ron Hornaday on restarts all day long as it is a skill not many have perfected like those 2.

You are correct on Kyles restarts, the other JDG drivers should take a lesson from him.

Thanks..... The yard is a work in progress. Currently working on some border fencing, re-laying the patio stones below the decking, & starting construction of an outhouse next to the pool. An outhouse from the outside with full plumbing on the inside. I'm a redneck but not that much of a redneck.

That's the thing. You actually get to follow those battles on the radio. Even television used to a long time ago. The art of broadcasting a NASCAR event has been long lost.

When I take in a race from a seat at the track, like most everyone else, I use a scanner. My driver is on the priority channel while the radio version of the race broadcast is what I follow. MRN/PRN often take my attention to battles/incidents around the track that I may have otherwise missed. Some will disagree but I think they are spot on in their description of the race. I'm one of the few that find their excitement as a plus to the broadcast. I share the same excitement when I'm there. From home, that excitement level is seldom gained by watching the televised race broadcast. Watching a race broadcast from home is like someone else having control of your television remote. You only see what they decide to show you. Listening to the race broadcast on the radio is as close as you can get to actually being there. JMO

Who knew? The way to finally get a good race out of Pocono didn't involve changing tires, aero, or dates. All it took was some threatening radar and desperate drivers really going for it. Maybe they could all do that the rest of the season too?
I don't get it. Drivers can race like this today with weather threatening and put on a good show. Why can't this happen any other week?
That's covered in the ever-popular 'Races need to be shorter' argument.

I gotta redo the deck steps and patio pavers if this heat wave ever breaks.

We need some smart person to come up with a way to build urgency among the drivers and teams in order to get the guys and gal up on the wheel more often.
I am a fan of hard-nosed, aggressive racing, and I enjoyed the intensity of yesterday's race, but not sure I agree with this line of thought. In the 21 races so far this year, have we really seen the eventual winners spend time just riding around? Maybe we have, but I don't remember it.

Joey Logano gets a lot of criticism for being overly aggressive, including some from me. But he hasn't done anything that wouldn't be done by any self-respecting Cup driver going for the win late in the race. Joey's problem is that he often drives that way on lap 6. Are we really saying that all drivers should go at it all the time the way they would in the final laps? And if that is what we want, should we retract our criticism of drivers who won't give an inch even in the early laps of a 500 mile race? I'm genuinely interested in thoughts on this subject.
