Rate The Race: Sonoma

6.5. If Hambone threw the race he should be investigated and banned from the sport, period. If NASCAR allows such an event to happen and does nothing about then they are not a legitimate sporting event and should be shut down.

I think most longtime observers of Nascar understand (some even embrace it) that from time to time Nascar uses the caution flag to manipulate some races and allows things like Kevin Harvick to jack up the field in a chase race with a car that everyone knows can't go. Some days a wreck blocking the track will not trigger a caution and other days a killer hot dog wrapper sitting out of the groove will cause a caution. Who knows what else potentially goes on that remains unseen.

I had to watch the race on DVR this week. Is no one talking about the ridiculousness of that debris caution on a road course? I was at Road America for my first IndyCar race this weekend (great time btw). Two times throughout that race, I saw officials run out on the track to pick up debris when the cars were far away. The race was run with one legitimate caution, and the best car won (rather than a random guy who wasn't at the front all race). Does NASCAR not allow officials on the track even on a road course? Or was the just more race manipulation to create an exciting finish? I'm glad Tony won, but I feel like it comes with an asterisk....7.

That series allows a safety worker on a green track? That's completely asinine.

I think this is pretty common in road course racing. A more expert fan can tell me I'm wrong.
Yep, Code 60, slow zones, virtual safety car, local yellows, etc. can be found around the world. Depends on the series, the track, and the situation.

The track is green except for the sector where the issue is. For the most part it's pretty well controlled. I'd much rather that then insane full course yellows on a 3+mile road course..

As far as Hamlin throwing the race, he threw it away... He didn't throw it.

I'm not aware of any racing series anywhere that would send a marshal out onto a green flag track to pick up debris. I think it is crazy to suggest a marshal should have run out onto the track Sunday at Sonoma during green flag running. Various forms of local yellow are a different matter, but Nascar doesn't do that for whatever reason.

Because bunched-up fields get Brian off.

Yeah, maybe so. But regardless of that, there is no way Nascar is going to send someone sprinting onto the track under green.

Mike Bugarewicz said he heard Nascar spotters discussing the debris, which was a factor in calling Tony in for tires since they were not making any progress on the track. Take a strategic risk, and some work out well, others don't work so well.

I'd like to see Nascar ignore certain small pieces of debris and continue under green. Nascar has been pretty consistent that they don't do that very often, and whenever they do that, they get roasted by those who might have benefited from a caution. Based on past history, one would not expect Nascar to ignore that debris for 22 laps, so pitting was probably a good gamble.

OMG , it was a spring rubber right in the Center of the track .Not a candy wrapper and it would easily cut down a racing slick , no problem . If that caused a driver or a fan to get hurt , we'd have been all over Nascar for failing to act. As for sending track workers out to pick it up during green flag racing , Nascar tries not to hire the real stupid ones.

There was a caution for minuscule debris off the line earlier in the race. That's where the issue is IMO

Maybe in the future NASCAR will have drones that can fly out and pick up debris under green.

The yellow often isn't thrown until the field is within a distance of the section again.

Very good race. I noticed that without the "ringers" there were very few Bonsai moves which meant drivers were racing but not banging each other. Lots of cars on the lead lap. 9. for the race and 10 for the winning moves.

Do you mean banzai? I think bonsai are small Japanese trees? !

First road race that I really enjoyed tbh

Great final 15 laps - shame denny's final bend looked a little staged and not what you'd expect from a world class driver.

I haven't hooked into the whole Tony thing like most of you long term fans but I was glad he got a win as I knew it'd please the public and you lot!

Loving that turn 7 (?) Where they go really wide over the bumps then swing back just in time - awesome!

I'm not a big Tony fan , but he is always a great story . I do love that this year will have another contestant to highlight what a farce this chase thing is .
