Rear End Rule Change for Chicago

Brad is one smart dude. He knows Roger won't go where it isn't safe, so he just evened the playing field for the chase. I truely believe Brad feels Penske should be doing the same things, but Roger likes his white horse more than he wants a championship.

NASCAR just wants to get this reigned in before it gets out of hand. No doubt that HMS was prepared for this eventuality and won't miss a beat.

did anyone see on the pre race this week they said to Rick Hendrick "other teams are wanting to duplicate something your teams are doing" and his response was "what, winning?" LOL....I have lost a little of the like I had for Rick over the last few years..but I thought that was a great answer..

That is a good answer. They clearly are the best right now, but Denny and the Roush boys may give them a real fight this year.

I don't worry too much about Hamlin, he is peaking now, and now is too early. You want your season to peak in the chase, ie Tony Stewart last year...

I'm not worried to much about him either, though Darian Grubb might be the difference for him. Something tells me Kevin Harvick may be turning the corner here soon here so I'm gonna keep my eye on him. Not saying he'll win it but I think he'll make some noise.

I don't agree with change mid season at all. While they may have been thinking outside the box, it wasn't outside the rules. These teams were working within the rules as written. TGP nailed it. Innovation. I thought these teams were to work on gaining an advantage on the competitors? IROC died a long time ago. There could have easily been a rule put in place starting with the 2013 season.

I agree, this is not something they just bolted on the car two weeks and it worked. This was something that was R&D'ed and was legal to the rulebook. If they wanted to change the rule they should've waited till Feb and told the others (Penske) to catch up!

I agree totally with DP and GP, they should have waited until next year. If Penske didnt want to put the time and money in the Legal innovations then thats on him. The old saying- keep up or drop out.

It's not all Penske and Brad that noticed this and said something. They've all been trying to figure out what is going on and many have. I can't post a link to this but this is what I've heard through NASCAR Radio. They were quoting Kyle Busch on this subject this morning. Apparently he had stated that more than just the Hendrick organization is using this particular setup in the rear of their cars. Is it just head games? Who the heck knows?

"The new rule places parameters on the truck arm front mounting bushings, which will be allowed to only have a maximum of a quarter-inch in total movement in one direction."

This doesn't eliminate innovation, it just limits how far they can go. When I look at the history of this rule that limits, it's actually back tracking and loosening the trackbar angle rule implemented earlier this year. NASCAR has always tried to control how far the rear spoiler can be shifted out to catch more air. HMS, got around that rule by having the car pass inspection, then exceed those limits when on the track. Instead of simply saying 'honor our limit, especially when you're racing', nascar is letting teams get around that limit, but only to a cetain degree.

Next up, we'll have a new inspection procedure that checks for movement. Then teams will come up with composite bushing that wear out a thin layer of soft material, creating a higher level of movement as the race goes on.

IMO, nascar should set an angle limit, and fine for mechanical devices designed to fool the inspectors and get around that limit.

Brad Keselowski will be in the media center at 2:10. No doubt this new rule will be an endless discussion. You know the reporters will be all over him about this as he's really the only one that has spoken out about what is going on.

Why do people keep calling this a rule change? It's not. It's a new rule governing a new technique spawned by this rule change back in June.

Teams play in the gray area and develop new techniques. nascar is forced to make new rules governing those new items.
It reminds me very much of days long ago when changes were being made among manufacturers due to an advantage of some sort. Even so I don't like it any better now than then.

I dont care who it affects and who it dont, I just dont like changing something like that at this stage of the season. Next week and the weeks after I doubt it will make any difference but we will never know.

The inconsistancy that pisses me off. NASCAR hammered HMS for the C-covers. Now they endores efforts to get around limits they set on the rear end shift. If you use NASCAR's reaction to those covers, these trick bushings should have brought a huge fine.

Mr Bumper sir, I called it a rule change because that is what the governing body of Nascar called it. I will call it the exclusion of an aberration if you like sir. Thank you for your consideration. :D

I guess buying pizza does have it's advantages.:D

This trick is old as dirt. I know guys that take a stock bushing and run a drill bit through it a bunch of times to soften it up and get these bushing to do this. Put it this way these guys could have the best which is a hard bearing that allows the arm to move freely and instead they are using the bushings. It wouldnt ever be a problem if someone didnt start bitching.

I read the media release about these rear bush modifications and they claimed it to be an Aero advantage. Not having moonshine in my veins, can someone please enlighten me on how it can be an aero advantage. Thanks.

Please disregard,I think I just enlightend myself.

Just a guess but it allows more air to the right rear spoiler, which provides more are

Part 2

More air on the right rear spoiler, an aero down force advantage. Plants the tire.
I gotta get better with my droid user skills

Part 3

It sticks the rear end out, like the car has Hips . Hips are good for handling, just be sure to give the car a girl name.

Thanks guys, this is what I imagined, tucks the rear down, also maybe over comes the removal of 1/4 of an inch from the side skirts by Nascar.

Shorter side skirts are what started all this. First teams went to an angled trackbar, which nascar put an end to in June. Along came the swinging rear, and now nascar has set limits to the movement.

This whole exercise seems counter productive. NASCAR wanted to make the cars harder to drive, and now with the added downforce, they are easier than before.
