Rewarding the champion of regular season

Like the regular season winner with a 1st round bye. Awesome.
Shouldnt that be for the 2nd round?, as the points leader after Richmond is going to be in the 1st round

That is a very popular opinion here, but I believe doing that would be a disaster of boredom unless there also was a major overhaul of the points scale at the same time. The Nascar points scale is by far the flattest scale of any major racing series in the world. It gives an insignificant reward to winning, versus the reward of taking a safe and easy 5th place or 10th place finish. The result would be an emphasis on points racing, an attitude of "coast and collect" that would be a major turnoff. Be careful what you wish for.

I would not mind the point system being overhauled and I think having each race count would be a good idea. The old system never bothered me as it rewarded consistency so you were better off getting 8 top 5's in 10 races as opposed to winning 5 and running out of talent in the other 5.

the chase is all broken. Starting in 2004, fans have left, why? partially the chase.Every race should mean the same

Brian France commented about the idea of a first round bye on Sirius XM radio. He seems opposed to the idea, although it's hard to be sure because of his habit of speaking in long, convoluted sentences...

“You know what’s on NASCAR’s radar? Anything that will make the racing tighter, more compelling, closer finishes and more opportunities for different drivers. So whatever it is that doesn’t break the bank for our team owners, then we’re going to be open to it. We’ve been clear about that.

“The other side of that is they have a lot of incentive, once you get a win in the regular season, to hang it out, let loose for [more] wins... Suddenly, if you had to have a points race within a points race, we’d have to think about what that does to that mentality that has been created, that we like, (of racing for the win).”

His message is consistent over time, that Nascar wants to have incentives to race for the win, don't want to add points-based incentives. IMO, this would have been the perfect time to ask France about carrying win bonuses forward through the 2nd and 3rd elimination rounds, rather than having them expire after the 1st round. But that apparently did not get asked.

I am all for going for wins but there has to be some kind of balance. The difference between 1 win and 5 wins does not equate to much.

If we complain that drivers stroke it after they get a win, why would we want the Richmond "champion" to get a 4 race bye into the second round?

So he can stroke it, of course. All of this makes perfect sense.

It does if the win bonus was carried forward past the first elimination round.
