Richmond Fall Night Race....who attends?

We are adding the Richmond night race to our schedule this year. We've been to the Dover fall race the past two years, and we are heading for Richmond this year. We usually have "hot passes" for the race, so we watch from the pitts. In Dover, they have that neat little grassy hill where everyone sits and watches. Is there a similar area at Richmond infield where people can sit and be out of the way? Anyone who has been in the pitts at Richmond, what are your suggestions?

We will be in town for Xfinity and Sprint Cup. Where is a nice hotel to stay at? Staying near other NASCAR fans is a plus! Thanks!
 
Last time I was down there I stayed in Ashland VA which was about an hour from the track. Not sure I would stay there again

I haven't been to Richmond in several years. My wife is burned out on racing trips, and we've seen the non-racing attractions in central VA.

I used to stay in Petersburg, about 20 miles south. I prefer sitting in the grandstands so I can't offer an opinion on the pits.
 
Of you don't have a hotel by now, you better start looking. You may have to go as far north as Fredericksburg now. But if you're going to be in town for a few days, there's a lot to do around there.

I've had pit passes before but never hot passes. Being a short track, it can become crowed in the pit area. As far as watching the race from the pits, I can't help...sorry. But I would think unless you're on top of a hauler, you aren't going to see much.

I've always like to sit on the exit of turn four near the entrance to pit road or near the entrance of turn one where the cars exit pit road. But as long as you're up high, anywhere is a good seat. I haven't been in the new grandstands in turn one, but I can imagine those are really good seats.

P.s. I have a nephew who lives in DC and he hates to see me coming cause every time I meet him I say 'When are you getting me those Richmond tickets? ' Well he shouldn't have told me he had a buddy with connections .
 
As you look through the lodging possibilities, try to avoid anything listed as in South Hampton Roads, Coastal Virginia, The South Side or Tidewater. It's properly the sovereign cities Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.

The area is about an hour and a half to two hours from the track, depending on where you land up, when traffic is running more or less normally. If some fool botches up at the Hampton tunnel you could be stuck in traffic for hours. The stretch of 64 east of the tunnel can be equally problematic between Newport News and Williamsburg whether the tunnel is clear or not.

Should you decide to in favor of it anyway and the unfortunate happens, MRN is broadcast on AM 850, WTAR.
 
I've only ever camped at Richmond. The only way to go IMO. Went there for years and sat all over eventually holding season ticket high in turn #1's tower. Awesome track. Simply priced me out of my seat forcing me to purchase Xfinity iand IRL tickets to remain in those seats. I couldn't even give the IRL tickets away. I gave up my seats and haven't been back.

I'd think with the reduction in seating capacity at that venue that a motel/hotel room should easily be found within a reasonable driving distance. If you've never had the experience, renting an RV for the weekend may be a great option. Lot's of options within walking distance regardless of crowd size.
 
MOTELS

Because the Raceway is located in a commercial zone as well as residential, there are a lot of motels reasonable close. Ask if there is a minimum number of nights & if the have a shuttle or are on the shuttle route listed above. Also, Richmond is a good place to bring the bikes AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT BRING THEM ON SPEEDWAY PROPERTY. Bring a chain & lock them to the gate but NOT NEAR THE OPENING.

Watching a race from inside the track at Richmond isn't very great (you could say it's the exact opposite of Dover). Pits are crowded and the views are very limiting (when I'm there, I typically sit in someone's hauler and watch it on TV). My only recommendation would be to head to the open area (past the support vehicles) as you enter turn one. You'll get an ok view of them coming out of the straightaway and into turn one. Though my real recommendation would be to scalp some cheap grandstand seats.
 
Ok. We got tickets in the Commonwealth Tower at RIR. I think we're in section Q, and we're the next row down from the top row, and we're on the aisle. They sold us a "Keep Your Seat" package for Xfinity and Sprint Cup. We got a room for Friday night at the Best Western Governor's Inn, we'll just drive home after the race on Saturday night. If we are fortunate enough to get Hot Passes, we'll visit the pits pre-race, then make our way to our seats for the green flag. Did we do OK with tickets and hotel selection?
