Mays won the World Series with the Giants in 1954 and was named NL MVP in 1954 and 1965

Willie Mays played during my "ERA" and was indeed one of the greatest. He was a joy to watch. Darn, how I miss the baseball that was played back then.

Ruth is the greatest if the measure is a player in the context of his era. The gap between he and everyone he was playing with was the largest. But it was a more primative era. So too was Mays' era somewhat more primative than future decades. The sad truth is that Barry Bonds was on a similar level as Mays in terms of all around play and production, but his reputation was destroyed by the steroids (which MLB didn't care about and tacitly encouraged during that time).

Regardless, Willie Mays has to be considered one of the 2-3 best position players of all time, all things considered. RIP to a legend.

I'd say Mays and Ruth in whatever order is fine. Mays was such an all around player. Also lost about a season and a half when he was in the Army during the Korean War.
