Robby Gordon penalized 100 points

Yikes..this is going to hurt a little.

WTF?

They found it opening day, but did not tell the team so they could change it?

Hurt a little? went from 9th in points to 40th! thats down right painful!

Oh no, they told him, he changed it. They were the only noses he got from GEM...way to go GEM.

But if it was found BEFORE he put it on the track, why not let them change it and give out a smaller warning, for the 1st time....

this just sucks...

How many times do I have to say Nascar is bull****?

Junior docked 50 points for a more illegal part?

Robby docked 100 points and loses crew chief for something DODGE took complete blame for?

Bull****.

[]

Bottom line is Nascrap has never liked Robby, and will always find a way to screw him over, just like the Montreal race last year.

Watch the language.

For your info Dale Jr. lost 50 drivers championship point as well as Rick with 50 owners champ points. Chad Walter was fined $25,000 and six week suspension..what more you want?

Sucks for Robby, me I want Walter fired! He messed with a great car that Kyle won in last season, it did not need "fixing!"

I agree with ya. Nascar makes it obvious as to who they dislike.

NASCAR levies fines, suspends crew chiefs
JIM UTTER

NASCAR suddenly finds itself in need of slew of replacement crew chiefs.
http://www.thatsracin.com/topstories/story/11210.html
Ten teams - one in the Sprint Cup Series, seven in Nationwide and two in the Craftsman Truck series - were issued penalties on Wednesday that included the suspension of seven different crew chiefs for infractions during Speedweeks at Daytona.

In Cup, owner and driver Robby Gordon was penalized 100 driver and owner points and his crew chief, Frank Kerr, was fined $100,000, suspended six races and placed on probation for having an unapproved front bumper cover on his No. 7 Dodge.

In the Nationwide Series, Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 5 team was stripped of 50 driver points, 50 owner points and crew chief Chad Walters was fined $25,000, suspended six races and placed on probation for altering the rear spoiler after template inspection.

The No. 0 (Johnny Davis), No. 1 (Johnny Sauter), No. 14 (David Gilliland), No. 64 (David Stremme), and No. 77 Cale Gale) teams were all penalized for having their oil reserve tank covers not fastened securely during post-qualifying inspection. Each team was penalized 25 driver and 25 car owner points.

In addition, each of the crew chiefs - Gene Allnutt, Jon Wolfe, Bob Edwards, Steve Darne and Charlie Wilson - have been fined $15,000 each and suspended for six races and placed on probation.

Finally, Jerry Baxter, crew chief for the No. 99, was fined $5,000 placed on probation until July 9 for having carburetor venturis that exceeded the specified size.

In the Truck series, Todd Bodine may have won the season opener at Daytona, but he is no longer the points leader. His No. 30 Toyota team was penalized 25 driver and 25 owner points for having a device on his truck to reduce the bed panel height during pre-qualifying inspection.

His crew chief, Mike Hillman Jr., has been fined $10,000 and suspended four races and placed on probation.

Also, crew chief Rick Ren of the No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Ron Hornaday was fined $5,000 and for having spoiler braces which exceeded the maximum one-inch width.

Could it possibly be because its a different series?

Other Nationwide Series teams were penalized less points than Jr...Where's the outrage?!?!?

WOW, NASCAR was busy little beavers this week, weren't they!! Duane

Those were intentional deliberate infractions. There's a clear double standard here.

Typical NASCAR bs.

I think any Cup team that has to cheat in Nationwide should have, at the least, the team that committed the infraction pulled from the Series for the remainder of the season. There's no reason why teams who have 4 cars in the top 35 in NSC points should have to cheat their way in the Nationwide Series.

JMO.

I don't think it's because it was Robby. Should we go back to fuelgate?

Yeah, NASCAR went out of their way to screw Robby at Montrael. You know that, I know that, Robby knows that and Brian France knows that. I don't buy any of this maintain pace car speed bs what so ever. But still.

NASCAR never took points from the 48 team after a deliberate infraction in 2006 SPEEDWEEKS.

It's not because it's Robby, it's just typical NASCAR double standard bs.

I'd have to agree, there is a double standard in Nascar for sure, it is too bad that Robby has to start down in 40th now instead of in the top 10 in points. I like him because he is fearless and doesn't let people push him around, but this has to be a big blow to his team.:(

I gotta side with Robby Gordon on this one. Can I be on the appeal commite?

No one in thier right mind would show up with an unaproved nose. You might as well tatoo "cheater" on his forhead. Without knowing all the details....I'm willing to bet it was a manufacturers issue and not a Team Gordon attempt at cheating.

You are right.

Robby Gordon Comments on NASCAR's Penalty:

This was an innocent mistake made by someone not even on my team. They accidentally supplied us the new Dodge noses that NASCAR hasn't yet approved because of what amounted to a clerical error. It was discovered during technical inspection and corrected before the race. It was not even close to being an intent to create some competitive advantage, and the mistake was not even made by my team.

This penalty is way out of proportion when you compare it what happened last year when a team was penalized 100 points for adding a substance to the fuel, or when a team deliberately changed the bodies of the COT. To penalize my team the same amount when we didn't even make the mistake, and the mistake was nothing more than inadvertent human error by someone else is just not fair. Other teams who have had similar issues to what happened with the nose on my car were only penalized 25 points.

I hope that NASCAR can reconsider when they have all the facts. In the meantime, we have no choice but to appeal this penalty. We started the season off on a high note with a top 10 finish at Daytona and we look forward to continuing that at California and Las Vegas.

Robbie ain't got a snowballs chance in hell, NASCAR don't like him, they have proven that, I believe they would just as soon see him go and race elsewhere as be where he is. This is just my opinion, but I do believe it. Duane

I dont believe that for a second.

There are worst people in NASCAR then Robby.

Question is if Nascar doesn't want Robbie then why do they allow him to race? It's their show and they can let in who they want and keep out who they don't. If some of you are correct then all Nascar is doing is making themselves look bad by "picking" on Robbie.
If it is as Robbie said then yeah the points seem a bit much but then I think back to him throwing out the padding and then steadfastly denying it even when it was showed to him on TV.
The truth probably lies somewhere between the 2...

I will go with Robby on this one. Nascar has made themselves look like an azz. The penalty was not even close to being fair. It is these type of decisions that are upsetting fans with Nascar. Jr can't bring all the fans back by himself, Nascar has to do a "little".

^ Exactly!

While the penatly does seem unfair as hell, it's actually right in line with what thy've been saying all along. An unapproved part is an unapproved part, period, regardless of intent. And they've also been saying since day one of the COT that there will be zero tollerance for COT infraction, period.

Regardless of intent, Nascar has to stick by their guns when handing out penalties. If they back down and say "well, you had no intent of cheating, therefore we'll let you off the hook or give you a lesser penatly," what's to stop someone else from cheating, and then claim that they had no intent of cheating? If they don't, it'll just get messyer and messyer, and look even more unfair the next time someone gets caught with an unapproved part or any other infraction that doesn't fit the rule book.

I do feel really bad for Robby though, and hope he's able to rebound from this.

My 2 cents, Dodge should step in and defend Robby on this. They have some blame after all.

Didn't Junior, Gordon, and Johnson all get 100-point penalties for COT infractions last year?

well, theres something you have to remember- what NASCAR says, usualy goes..except for very rare instances. The appeals commitee isn't NASCAR people- it's represenatives from all american sports (or so i'm told, confirmation?). So he may win the appeal, especially if dodge butts in.

Well Nascar sure got busy after just one race. I feel bad for Robby. It's going to be hard for him to recover from this penalty, esp. since he's just a one car team. If we had no doubt after seeing one race, we can be sure now the season has started.

Nascar will probably blame the team for not doing their homework, even if they changed to Dodge a week earlier. Unaproved parts are just that, unaproved, and I get the feeling it will stand.
I don't agree with the penalty though. A fuel additive is also unaproved and when discovered after the fact should carry a hefty penalty as it could have enhanced performance.
I say 25 points

as i said, i think the committee will think different from nascar. how different, is hard to say.

I read somewhere that Marty Smith on NascarNow reported that Robby Gordon talked to Nascar officials who urged him to appeal the penalty.

WTH, why would Nascar officials urge him to appeal since they are the ones that penalized him.

I'm not in the camp that believes Nascar has some secret vendetta against Gordon ( nor do I ) and think that they did exactly what they said they'd do - zero tollerance.

Almost every team appeals their penalties and I'd think they'd want Gordon to do the same.

I'd hope the appeal board would treat him the same as they treat any other team - no matter how many cars they have.

If Nascar starts making judgements based on intent to break or ignorrance of the rules, many fans would never be happy - including me.

But NASCAR does make judgements based on intent to break or ignorance of the rules. That's why they normally let the Hendrick and Roush teams off with much less.

You would.

He should appeal the penalty, and probably will. It's flat out bs.

I also think Todd Bodine should've been stripped of his win.

"The real reason RG was fined? (Section 24-3-6 NASCAR Rule book) No single car owner/driver team shall stomp Hendrick, Childress or Roush teams in the Daytona 500."

FONTANA, Calif. -- A campaign is under way declaring Robby Gordon's innocence for what NASCAR said was an illegal part used on his car during Speedweeks. (read more)

Representatives from Robby Gordon Motorsports will canvas the Auto Club Speedway grandstands on Saturday gathering signatures for a petition demanding NASCAR reverse its "unfair" decision to dock Gordon 100 points. Crew chief Frank Kerr also was fined $100,000, suspended for the next six Sprint Cup Series events until April 9 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.

Along with the petition, "Rally for Robby" T-shirts are being made for Gordon fans to wear during this weekend's Cup events, said Sophia Lombardo, spokesperson for Gordon.

Also, Thomas Flocco, president and CEO of Beam Global Spirits & Wine Inc., Gordon's sponsor, has sent a letter addressed to NASCAR president Mike Helton, as well as other top officials, voicing the company's frustrations.

"Robby's team earned an honest 8th place finish in the Daytona 500 through tireless dedication, quality and character, not because of rule violations," the letter states. "As your own officials have stated, there appears to have been no intent to circumvent the rules in order to gain a competitive disadvantage. It amounts to an honest mistake that was corrected before the race.

"Your decision unfairly penalizes Robby, his sponsors and his fans. ... While we fully support the rules NASCAR has put in place to keep the playing field level, we ask that you closely review all the facts," the letter continued. "Please consider not just the letter of the law, but the spirit of the rules of competition."

Gordon on Thursday said that he would appeal the penalty levied against the No. 7 team by NASCAR. (read more)

"I hope that NASCAR can reconsider when they have all the facts," Gordon said in a statement released on his Web site. "In the meantime, we have no choice but to appeal this penalty. We started the season off on a high note with a top-10 finish at Daytona and we look forward to continuing that at California and Las Vegas."
