Setting the stage: Racing renewed under new format

Now that I've seen stages at every type of track I really like them. Wasn't real sure about them when the announced them but I think they are good. Restrictor plate tracks seem to be the best place for them and the intermediate are ok. They have made me enjoy road races and short tracks more so for me they work. That road course race was pretty good and I liked the early stages and all the passing and lead changes it brought. The second half was more of a traditional road race and things got stretched out but had plenty of strategy and worring about if that caution would come out. As I've said I thought it mixed new with old perfectly and I like to late stage being longer.

Yeah they don't bother me, and they keep me so confused on the playoffs I have a wait and see on that part. I defended the first chase like you defended cuppers in the lower series, only difference I wanted to see how it played out..it sucked, But I try to keep an open mind, maybe the playoff points will make a fairer playoff winner.

I have heard different reasons for why people like stages such as a TV time out, scheduled caution and a chance to bunch things up and keep cars on the lead lap. It will be interesting to see how the fans feel about stages as Nascar likely will increase them in the coming years and the first set of stages could be like heat races and the last will be like the main. If we have learned anything in the last 15 years is that Nascar loves to implement changes so it is wise not to get to attached to any particular format.

As I and a couple others mentioned last week, I think it'll eventually grow to 4 stages that are 30%, 30%, 30%, and 10% of the race length. This would guarantee NASCAR would get those late race "shootouts" they love so much on a weekly basis.

I'm ok with the stages as well, but the change I like the most this year is the bonus points carrying through the first three rounds of the chase...er....playoffs. One of the most idiotic things about the 2014-16 Chase was wiping the bonus points away after Dover.
This. Exactly this.

Thinkin’ when they go to timed races in the next couple of years, they go to on the clock “stages” rather than laps.

May be complete with extremely excitin’ two minute warnings.

There will always be folks who like watching race cars going around in circles regardless of the format used but and Nascar should send these people a nice fruit basket each Christmas as they are loyal to a fault.
Looking forward to my fruit basket! Heck, I even enjoy going down to the local tourist go-cart track and watch them race.

A good race can break out on any track anywhere is my philosophy. Even as screwed up as F-1 is :p

If the majority of the justification for stages is to encourage drivers to race harder in the first half of the race, then award the bonus points at the two preliminary stage cutoffs and keep the green flag out. But NASCAR still generally thinks that races can't be good without bunching up the field and having a good double-file restart every so often (like we wouldn't have enough cautions anyways...) and that still bothers me. I'm fine with the stage points and the playoff points being handed out, still not big on the sold cautions.

And they have to make these shorter, the second Xfinity stage of Iowa (60 laps) started with 9 laps already in the books. Seriously?

Some of those Scott miller quotes don't add up... "we didn't go into this thinking we would have action at the end of every single stage". BS! That's exactly what they wanted... don't try and flatter yourselves over this crap.

the sport is on a crazy decline and nascar's brass might as well be dancing on the deck of the titanic...

I got my butt handed to me by this terrific little girl at an indoor track a while back. I enjoyed watching her do her thing as she just killed it.

I agree as if you are going to arbitrarily stop the action then stop counting laps until they go green.

Check out the TV thread for a look at the Sonoma ratings.

Just keep wondering how much of those ratings are solely dale jr viewers... 0.2, 0.4?...

Plenty of younger drivers have filled in Jeff's and Tony's holes they left recently. There are more Jr fans so yeah there might be a fall off, but the competition on the track is a different story, he never has set the world on fire on the track. There will be plenty of interest in who Hendrick gets to drive the car.

Steve is the new face for those who want to hate Nascar. In the end he only does and says what the back room guys decide.

The one thing mentioned that I agree with is those lost laps run under Yellow between stages. There is no need for a caution at the end of a stage and make the cars pit under Green flag only. If a car flat spots his tire when a caution comes out let them change his tires BUT do nothing else to the car.

As I've stated before, I am enjoying being a less ardent fan much more than I'd have ever imagined but I'd never have any interest in the sport at all had it not been for the Jeff Gordon/Dale Sr rivalry.

If NASCAR is lucky a sustained heated rivalry will develop between Larson and a veteran like BK or KB which causes the fans to pick sides, thus creating a fan rivarly. This is the only way NASCAR will grow. Every era of sustained growth for NASCAR has featured a robust rivalry.

I have to admit that I like the stages. Sadly though it's for the same reason that I enjoy road courses now. They, for the most part, bring the only real racing "action" these days.

25 years ago I would check the stats after the road courses and Pocono. Boring!!!
The rest of the races were great! What changed? Did the road courses and Pocono suddenly get super exciting? LOL Naaaaa.

well it has been said that a fight started all of the rise in popularity. That was before WWE. maybe that is the problem. WWE pulled away the fans. Good a guess as any at this stage of the game.

Their fans have left in droves as well and have their own ratings problems so its not them.

they probably moved on to MMA.:p Seriously though, there is a bubble of Me too's that every generation has, they all have to come up with some kind of herd entertainment they can all flock too. Quite a few of the younger ones are flocking to raves

You know what? You are on to something!
The fall in WWE ratings almost directly corelates to the rise in MMA ratings! Sooooo........... I'm going to go ahead and wonder out loud....... Did fans leave the hyped up, psuedo sport for something pure once they had a choice???
Is there somebody or even a group of people out there right now working to do the same in racing? Does someone with the resources and vision have a plan in the works for us?

I'll take Conor McGregor over Hulk Hogan any day!!! Bring it on!!!

I'll take the Bushwackers (not Kyle or Kevin) the Macho Man or Rowdy Roddy any day over the MMA stuff as it doesn't resonate with me at all. As far as Nascar goes, IMO, it began taking steps away from being a sport 15 years ago but once again that is only my opinion.

"something pure", that was the case like many things in the early days. Already with McGregor fighting out of his sport the possibility is there of turning into WWE or even Boxing that has a shady past. MMA could really end up with a black eye out of this. Boxing already has one IMO. Big money did the same thing to Nascar. split up Indycar and almost destroyed it and F-1 has been a mess for years.

I'm not into any of that stuff really. But from what I have seen of MMA, it is not "staged".

You're 100% correct about the big money. I think the fad has ran it's course though. I'm serious when I say that this just kind of dawned on me the other day. This is my sport! I've been involved in it in nearly every aspect. The only reason I'm tuning in to this sh!t show now is because of Ryan Blaney.
To hell with these fools! Brian isn't going to live forever! Let the fans leave. Let the money leave. Bring on more stupid a$$ gimmicks!! I'll still be here when the dust clears and they are all gone!
My other recent epiphany was concerning Brian's replacement. It's so simple that it never dawned on me.
Ben Kennedy!!!! Who could possibly be better than someone that has, or is going to have a very well rounded view of major league racing. I was hoping his mom was going to take over but I guess that ship has sailed. Anyway, I vote for Ben!!!

you're right, Kennedy quiet as it is kept is next in line. Guy is a racer who is pretty good at it too. He is the future.

Funny, I was wondering about that just the other day. I assume he's never landing a full-time Cup ride. Seat time would be a great benefit if he winds up in an upper-level management position in the organization.

He was running second or third in a Childress car at Iowa for a while. He won an Xfinity race last year, he's not bad as a driver.
