Should nascar act now to resolve the problem with KO qualifying?

• One cool down unit connected through either the left side or right side hood flap/cowl flap is allowed to cool the engine
• The hood must continue to remain closed
• Plugging in the generator will not be allowed
• Two crew members will be allowed over the wall to support the car and driver
• No cool down laps will be permitted

How many of you out there now look forward to watching qualifying each week? Just curious.

I've always been interested in it if I am home to watch it, it's on. Now I am making sure that it's DVR'd for later viewing. In one of the other threads for last weekend's race I mentioned that it is being reported that last weeks Friday crowd @ Vegas was one of the largest in recent years for qualifying. Hard to tell for sure without numbers being reported. The new qualifying sure has generated interest. That's about all that is being talked about and reported on these days. I certainly has to be drawing more people through the gate to watch. I normally don't bother going to qualifying unless there is a companion event. If I were at the track this weekend a Friday ticket would be purchased by me just to watch it unfold.

I'm interested more than ever. Nascar got my attention back this year
Yep, they've hit on something here. We aren't going to Bristol this year but I have a lot of friends that are there that we normally camp with. Us and our group of friends never bother to go over to the track for qualifying on Friday's. I'm interested to hear back from these people to see if they went over this year.

Great move by @NASCAR for reviewing the qualifying rules and making the change, allowing teams to use cool down units, starting this week

Cooling Unit from RCR to be used under the new rules.....

The unit has a fan inside. It is plugged into the car to send and receive the water. It'll run though this box returning cooler water, eventually cooling the engine down in 6-8 minutes.

Approx 4'x5'x8'

I bet they will send it through the paint shop first.;)

I haven't bothered watching qualifying for a few years.
I look forward to it now because it's cool seeing that many cars on the track, and you know they're all trying to go as fast as they can.

Whereas in practice, lots of teams are just trying to get the car comfortable and aren't really trying to get to the top of the speed chart.

IMO this is much more exciting and it seems to be the older wealthier drivers who are complaining and the younger eager guys don't seem to have an issue with it. I see it no different that a green flag pit where a car pitting slows while everyone else is standing on the pedal.. Should we eliminate greens flag pits because of the increased potential for danger or let the drivers earn their money by show casing their skill?
if you want excitement, just do away with the pit road speed limit.

They had to make that move and make it quickly. If there had been a serious accident with injury, they would have had blood on their hands and even NASCAR is smart enough to realize how bad that would have been for them.

NASCAR has serious accidents with injuries at tracks that NASCAR refuses to place SAFER barriers at. What difference would it make to them

Interesting.....

From Jim Utter' column.
The crowds for Friday’s knockout qualifying and the Saturday Nationwide race at Las Vegas last weekend were significantly up over last season. The qualifying crowd alone was perhaps the biggest seen in the sport in years.

The article is mostly about television ratings but it does show that the KO Qualifying seems to be of pretty big interest to the fans.
