There have been several (too many some will say) changes to our beloved sport over the past few years, so the last thing fans may want is more change,

BUT,

Do you think it would be cool for NASCAR to redesign the cup championship trophy after each MAJOR (not including the minor tweaks to the chase formats before 2014) points system overhauls?

We saw the Winston Cup trophy be redesigned in 2003 for the Chase introduction. Fans can argue that winning a Winston Cup vs the Nextel & Sprint Chase Cups have different difficulty levels, meaning, fairness, etc... So, when NASCAR introduced the new playoff format in 2014, should the Cup trophy have been redesigned for a new format?

Discuss below!

I think they just need to change it... Back to what it was or something similar... Something resembling.... I dunno.... Maybe a trophy lol

In the spirit of elimination, It could be in the shape of a Turd.

I like indycar trophies..but I also like NASCARS unique awards...like the lobster and the grandfather clock

BobbyFord: while I don't believe you will follow through with your threat to quit following na$car, I hope you don't go. I've learned to appreciate your cynicism.

Just because he won't watch the races doesn't mean he'll stop posting here. ;)

Hell, I cant remember the last time when I watched the full schedule of races. I skip all the non points events which is why the Daytona 500 seems like a longer wait for me. I dont waste my time with the qualifiers and such.

Thank you, I appreciate that :)

I followed NASCAR faithfully, for many years. Before the DVR days, I'd VHS qualifying if I was at work. I watched every race, live, not recorded.
When at the track, I'd grab an adult breakfast beverage, my headset & scanner and head to my seat to watch qualifying. Now you only need to watch the last lap of qualifying. What used to take an hour at ACS can now be accomplished in about 30 seconds.
They took the excitement out of Talladega and Daytona when they put on the plate (unless you like 20-car pileups.)
They took points out of the Championship equation with the points reset format last year. Why watch the entire year when only the Homestead winner has a shot? That opens up 35 weekends for me to do something relevant, instead.
In 2014 a 5th place driver "won" the "Championship."
NASCAR is a lot less important, to me.

Boy O Boy........... did you ever say a mouthful there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I expect I'll post a lot less once the season starts. Y'all know I don't like the new format. I'm not going to follow the racing and I'm not going to be the forum downer on the weekends. :)

You are a better man than me...... I'll be posting still. Being my regular ole stick in the mud.........

The qualifiers are better than the actual race. They're shorter, so those outside looking in don't have much time to make their moves. And at least they straight-out racing and don't have gimmicky formats / multiple segments / field inversions / mandatory pit stops / required pizza deliveries.

It's a trophy. If the only complaint most of us had with NASCAR was the shape of it, this sport would be in excellent shape.

I think I have been the FIRST to answer this question. All of the other folks posting in this thread should have been texting one another and not making the rest of us read their texts!

It needs to resemble a cup. Otherwise drop the term Cup from the series title.

We'll probably see a new trophy when the new title sponsor comes along. I think that was dictated more by Nextel in 2004 than it was by the change in points system.

2004, youre right. I said 2003 in my OP. My bad.

I thought about that though. But then we would have seen a change in design from Nextel to Sprint, no?

I think not because Nextel won the bid to get the sponsorship and that made the contract. Sprint bought Nextel and
I doubt they got anymore than a name change. Then again I may be wrong.

Not exactly the same thing. Sprint bought out Nextel therefore inhereting the deal with NASCAR, and actually kept some of Nextel's traits after the merger. If you recall, Sprint had a red, black, and white color scheme prior to the Nextel deal, but changed to Nextel's yellow and black after the merger. I guess the trophy fell into that category too.
