Agree with everything you've said, except the part where state prison is a life of luxury. Every seen any documentaries on prison life? It's not fun, you never know when you're gonna get stuck.
I have personally seen the inside of several penal institutions...and not for the reasons you might think. I mean no offense to anyone by saying what I am about to say. I am speaking from personal experience only here as a probation/parole officer in the state of Tennessee.
You may have seen the county jail. Hope not, but some of us probably have. But I dare say that besides fergy none of y'all have ever been inside a full blown, maximum security prison. Trust me, you don't want to see it either. While I advocate that our prisoners are treated better than our soldiers for some strange reason, the conditions there are far from posh and luxurious. Gang wars are so common that gang affiliation is taken into account before a prisoner is assigned a cell. The threat of death, mutilation, rape, and other more pleasant things is imminent. Anyone who thinks that the typical (emphasis on typical, there are exceptions) prison guard is anything short of an animal is mistaken; I have trained with them, and the vast majority are only slightly more housebroken than the inmates. In Tennessee, the requirement to be a prison guard is high school diploma PREFERRED. That speaks volumes. I am not trying to slam prison guards; I am merely pointing out my experiences. Anyone consider random body cavity searches performed by a 320 pound man luxurious living? Imagine Jimmy Spencer checking your body cavities for contraband. OK, now unimagine it.
I won't even BEGIN to describe the forensic unit at the mental hospital I went to a few times (again job related TYVM). Affectionately known as the Silence Of The Lambs Unit. Whew!
Besides, if prison was as luxurious as some people like to think, why do people constantly try to break out?
Sorry for the diatribe, just had to get that off my chest.
