Sounds like this perennial snoozer could be due for a shakeup.

With just over two weeks remaining until the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a format for the May 21 exhibition race still hasn’t been finalized.

Until a few weeks ago, it seemed the 2015 format – four 25-lap segments ending with a 10-lap shootout – likely would remain in place this season. But multiple people with knowledge of the discussions have told NBC Sports that Charlotte and NASCAR officials have lobbied for significant changes to add drama to an event in which the winner has led all 10 laps of the last segment for the past three seasons.

The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the talks publicly.

Among the changes being considered are:

–Varying the length and number of segments;

–Adding a mid-event inversion (which has been tried in past editions of the All-Star Race);

–Dynamic pit stop strategies, such as requiring the top 10 to pit for tires before a final segment while allowing the rest of the field to remain on track.

It’s uncertain when the format will be determined, but discussions have continued this week. All-Star Race changes were among the topics discussed by NASCAR officials with the Sprint Cup Drivers Council last Friday at Talladega Superspeedway in a meeting that went three hours.

The only thing that reads different than other years is that last item about the top 10. All that would do is cause drivers to lay back leading into that final segment. Yawn.

How bout starting all of the Charter teams giving the segment winners Chase spots. If they already have them than give them a bye to the next round. It sure wouldn't do anything to dilute the Chase field any more than the current system and it should give everyone enough motivation to win the damn thing..

Oh now. You're thinking like the past baseball commissioner who decided to give World Series home field advantage to the league that won the All-Star game (one of the reasons I quit watching).

I loved the field inversion format from a few years back. It was fun, and definitely differentiated the allstar race from the rest of the season. Plus, when you put crappy cars at the front, there is more opportunity for passing.

More gimmicks.

Here's an idea: move the damn thing somewhere else and run it as regular point-paying race. Are there other sports where the rules for the All-Star event are this different from a regular game / match / throw-down?

And I've never understood what was 'All-Star' about it; it's the same guys and gal we see every week.

This I agree with. I'd gladly trade this event for a race at Iowa etc. If it has to exist, I like it to be as different as possible. Otherwise, it's the one NASCAR weekend I skip all year.

This time it counts!!

Gimmicks, gimmicks, gimmicks, funny how that's nascars solution to everything. Couldn't be that the all star race is a meaningless stale event a boring track. Changing the pit strategies will fix it
+1. If anything will fix it, it is the new aero rules.

Worst change ever made to the All-Star race was the mandatory 4-tire pit stop for the final segment. There's a reason why the leader with 10 to go has led every lap in the last few races...everyone is on the same strategy and there aren't enough laps being run to allow the tires to wear.

i think it would good. with double file restarts and fresh tire, not sure who this hinders.

Maybe we should just forget everything and fill up the tanks and run them until the last person runs out of gas - whom of which would be the winner. There will be a minimum lap time that must be met.

Thank you,
Brian F.

Would honestly be better than the current format.

Idgaf about the format. Changing the format wont change the excitement.

The all star race's excitement is built upon it being a no points balls to the wall event with huge winnings for 1st place.

The racing quality for years now has been quite poor. Now, it seems like the quality is more of what it should have been. Therefore, the racing should be better. All in theory.

I used to love the All Star because everyone had special paint schemes and there was a certain allure to the event. Now, not so much.

Rather than fill 'em, give 'em ten gallons. That could be a lot of friggin' fun.

Why not have a skills challenge day for All Star weekend? Pit stop challenge, fuel mileage challenge, first car to get into the catchfence challenge, first driver to get fined for what they said during an interview, etc.

Maybe loosen some lugs nuts and pull a few steering wheels, you might be onto something.

How about some ramps with tunnels at the end and fireworks when the cars go thru?

I have not seen an All Star event for years as it is usually tedium however with the new rules package it might be worth looking into.

If I had my druthers this date would be used for a points paying race, the boys would race mothers day and there would be no more Busch Clash or whatever it is called now and the Daytona 500 run on that date. This would free up another weekend so the season could end earlier.

I don't think I've been entertained by the All-Star Race since 2005. A race Mark Martin wasn't screwed by NASCAR in.
Mark Martin won the 1990 Winston Cup championship and the 2007 Daytona 500.

Andy one of my favorite Nascar screwing Mark Martin moments happened at the 1993 Winston All Star race.

During the final 10 lap segment Mark seemingly had the race won. Then there was a late race caution and a restart with the evil one hisself, Dale Earnhardt jumping the restart.
But Nascar people are pros and needed it to at least look fair. So they lined them up again for the final two laps.
And Dale and Nascar screwed Martin more gently the 2nd time.

Dale ran him door to door down the backstretch into turn three. That's when it just became to much for Martin. He obviously was remembering how they screwed him out the 1990 championship, and he probably sensed that they wouldn't let him ever win the 500 either.
It must have broke his concentration as Dale drove in deeper.

I was sitting in the grandstands and it was a sweet beautiful thing to watch. An elderly lady was sitting next to me, and she was hating everything about it. She started the night rooting for Bill Elliott, and adopted Martin late in the race, to satisfy her need for Dale not to win.

I could tell that she was really hurt. She looked at me yee-hawing it up, with my Earnhatdt colors, and just calmly said in disbelief that it wasn't right. I just smiled and wished her the best, I certainly wasn't going to disrespect her.

But deep down inside, I was thrilled with her pain. Mark Martin, Bill Elliott people, essentially all Ford racing fans all pissed off and used up by Earnhardt.

Again.

I always loved the way Dale pissed off the Ford people he used. Damn it was great.
Thanks for a reminder of the satisfaction of remembering her and everyone else's scars.
If you have other Martin scars for me to reminiscence over, please share, cause I don't feel your pain.

Yee Haw, Woot or something.... [evil laughter]

Public flogging for fans who want to get rid of a race or anyone who suggests the snorefest that is iowa should take its place

Well Mark is just happy he wasn't killed after this incident.

That makes two of us. I felt like no one treated it as scary as it was. I damn-near **** my pants when that happened.

As far as the all-star race, if they upped the purse to say, $5+ million, I bet this race becomes as intense as it used to be. It's not like SMI can't afford it.

Whatever happened to the pitcrew challenge?
