Here kitty, kitty, kitty
It wasn't all that long ago that when you attended a big time NASCAR event, you could find cute little girls all over the place handing out cigarettes. Later, one had to find their way to the big tent and show an ID before you could get those freebies, but the little girls in their red and white outfits were still all over the place. The track itself had those red and white colors just about everwhere you looked, from the stands, to the walls of the track to the consession stands, to the souvineer haulers and even the flag beneath the stars and stripes. This was afterall, NASCAR's Winston Cup Series. RJ Reynolds took over the sponsorship of the going-no-where NASCAR Grand National Series and made it what it is today, one of the most successful sports in the country. Today, those cute little girls in their red and white outfits are nowhere to be found. The big tent that was used to hand out cigarettes is now more than likely a tent that houses a stop smoking clinic. Even the Busch race was sponsored by a stop smoking product.
Now I'm not a smoker, though I did smoke for many years, and I'm not crying over the loss of RJ Reynolds to the sport, even though that company is or was one of the biggest employers in my fair city, and it wouldn't bother me in the least if all people stopped smoking, but it's just the irony of it all. Somehow, this just doesn't seem right...
