Sprint Unlimited more than doubles UFC Fight Night ratings on FOX Sports 1

Nascar had 2.5x total viewers. But only did 50% better in the 18-49 demo that advertiser's care so much about and that the industry measures itself by.
NBA's 18-49 demo rating was 3x Nascars.
NBA 2.6
Nascar 0.9
UFC 0.6

Total Viewers
NBA 5.7M
Nascar 3.5M
UFC 1.4M

UFC got a huge boost from Nascar. That 1.4M total viewers is double the typical UFC Fight Night #.. UFC Fight Nights on FS1 have typically been getting about 700k viewers.

I'm sure Fox and UFC would love to do more double headers with Nascar if they can pull in 1.4M for a Fight Night card.

I got my fingers crossed for more doubleheaders. Just like we see every year on 4th of July weekend, with the Pepsi 400 ( or whoever sponsors it now) and usually the biggest UFC card of the year going back to back with minimal overlap.

Too bad last weekend's UFC card stunk.
If you weren't a UFC fan then, you probably ain't one now after that showing.
The 10 decisions on Saturday night tied the record for most ever.
NASCAR definitely ruled the night in my household, followed by NBA All-Star Saturday night, and then the UFC.

Oh, well, can't win them all.

If I'm NASCAR, beating(pummeling) the UFC in ratings on Saturday is like gold medaling in the Special Olympics.

Sounds like a bigger night for UFC than for NASCAR.

Well, the 2013 #s I found say the Sprint Unlimited had 5.7M viewers in 2013 when it was on Fox broadcast, not cable Fox Sports 1.
So, 2.2M fewer people watched the Sprint Unlimited in 2014 compared to 2013. That's a huge drop. It also did a 1.4 in the 18-49 demo in 2013, vs 0.9 in 2014. So a hell of a lot more people watched it last year, both young and old.

And the 2012 #s I found (all at TVByTheNumbers) show 6.7M people watched in 2012, with a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demo.

So in two years the # of Americans watching has been cut in half. That's not good.

Not a fan of FS1, but I'll watch NASCAR on any network they put it on.

Fender, when I joined this happened, you were a big Keselowski fan. Why you turning your back on the blue deuce?

But....but.....but wait.... I.... I... I thought NASCAR wasn't the big sport on that channel? Weren't we all supposed to stop watching NASCAR and start watching UFC???

Yeah, I keep forgetting that I'm not supposed to like that channel.. I find myself tuning in for all of the hours of NASCAR programming.

This is what I meant when I said NASCAR was being used as a "lead in" for UFC. NASCAR is where the ratings are and FOX Sports 1 is going to use NASCAR to boost the UFC's ratings.

As for the ratings disparities, let's not forget what impact the Winter Olympics could have on that.

I love that there was a huge argument about this and now the numbers are in and the NASCAR side won :D

However, the demo ratings are worth being concerned about. Yeah, NASCAR's demo ratings were solid and it propelled UFC but not even a third of NASCAR's viewers are 18-49 years old. That means, as I've been saying, NASCAR's fanbase is still much older and that NASCAR needs to bring in new viewers.

But let's not overlook the fact that this was only the Sprint Unlimited, a meaningless exhibition race - and not a very good race for that matter.

Well I know Im a newer fan and Im in that category. I just hope they get em.. If most of the fans are over 49... its no wonder why the polls on this new format overwhelmingly say no lol... Maybe pairing NASCAR with UFC (or any other sport) will be helpful... how do we know a part of the numbers isn't people who tuned in for UFC?... and saw the race... I know that after I saw ONE race.. I never missed another one... maybe I just have it in me.. but before that I was right there with these douches saying NASCAR was just a bunch of guys driving in circles. It took one race for me to get hooked.. I only wish I would have watched earlier... but maybe if they can use some tactics like this they may get some of the younger guys.. Im of the mindset that all they have to do is get them to pick a driver and watch one race... that's what did it for me.

...plus I find it hilarious even MORE that people had the big argument UFC v NASCAR and an exhibition race with 8 cars had double the ratings of one of the biggest fights of the year.

Like nascage said, this was a boost for UFC. Unfortunately for them, I'd say anyone who watched those crap fights isn't likely to have become a UFC fan. Boring as hell.

I like UFC.. followed it for a while... now I really could care less about it. I follow GSP and was a fan of Anderson Silva until he turned into a douche and stuck his chin out mocking the guy and got knocked out. Plus now his leg flaps like a chicken wing.

...but NASCAR is way better... I think if they can get some of them to watch it.. especially if the fights after suck... they'll get the fans.

I guess if Nascar had more finishes like the Allison - Yarborough race that ened up in a brawl, they might draw more of the UFC crowd.

That's a good point. It sucks that that is what would bring the fans in. It's undeniable, I mean NASCAR came on the scene through that fight. The fans want drama, us race fans are already hooked and love a good race.. but the fights and wrecks are what the other guys want. More drama will make more fans.. I wonder who's expense it will be at this time?

HAH! I'm pretty sure you said FS1 would be gone without nascar. This latest version of what you said makes more sense.

I do wonder if some of those UFC fights are fixed(not all but some). Kinda like WWE with a different name.

^They're not.

UFC and Nascar both need to do well.. FS1 has been an abject failure and needs all the ratings it can get.

NASCAR and MLB are where FOX Sports 1's focus needs to be. I don't know how much they spent to get UFC and College Basketbore but based on the amount they promote those vs. anything else, I'd venture to say they paid too much and know it.

Considering the games they get for college basketball and the fights they're getting (PPV fights are the big fights.) It's not surprising the ratings are bad.

UFC is not my cup of tea. It's too long and drawn out. It's funny that the generation of viewers that likes UFC thinks NASCAR is too long and drawn out.

Those fights the other night were horrible. Every fight except one went to a scorecard decision. There were never really any power moves in any of the fights. It was just ... there.

So..... It is your Cup of Tea then? I'm confused. You seem to know an awful lot about what you don't watch.

But you get to see the PPV replay on FS1. I refuse to pay $50 for UFC cards, so 6 months later I watch for free. Then there is the Ultimate Fighter. UFC content is helping FS1, that's for sure.

Agreed. UFC has the same problem nascar has, points fighting. Until they change the scoring methods, fighters will play the game.

My only experience with UFC are the commercials. And that's only while watching NASCAR events. I'm okay with that.

Thanks for sharing. I'm OK with you being OK with that. ;)

The UFC has become ballroom dancing. The prelims and undercard offer much better fighting. The problem for the UFC is they don't control the scoring methods or the judging. They have now upped the bonus money for fight and knockout of the night, but that's about all they can do.

Unless someone's buying your drinks, it ain't free.
Lol well u have to pay for the beer at ur house too right? and then another $50 for the fight... I usually would go to a bar.. spend about $50 and get drunk and still get to watch the fight. I don't anymore but I used to a few years back when I was really into UFC
