Steve Phelps Named New NASCAR President

As time went on I thought this also. Brian needed an enabler, somebody between him and reality.

Brent Dewar will probably fall out of any loops he was in

I may be wrong, but isn’t Brent more of a ‘racer’ than a ‘suit’?

It's slightly off topic, but Adam Stern also tweeted today about "increasing industry chatter" about the sale of Nascar...

Jimmie Johnson feels ‘calmness’ about NASCAR leadership changes

“I actually have some calmness that comes with it, to be honest with you,” the seven-time Cup champion said Thursday morning during a media event at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Johnson said he was called Wednesday night by International Speedway Corp. president Lesa France Kennedy about the change, which didn’t come as a shock.

This sale to media ownership would be the best thing to happen to nascar in decades. It was once way too big to be a family business, and an invested media group can get it back to where it once was, and take it even further. Let the Frances keep running the lower series below Trucks.

having faith in a gobble gobble mega corporation that doesn't know squat about racing (see NBC) isn't my cup of tea. They blunder along in layers and layers of management. It wasn't a improvement when Fox disbanded Speed, I can't see Comcast doing any better. The existing powers that be now can make changes much quicker (they just did) Phelps is a good move, I think lots more changes are in the future. Nascar has barely scratched the surface with cost cutting, spec engines in the trucks, composite bodies in Xfinity, and standardized parts in Cup. The racing is better for it. More will come.

I didn't know who Steve Phelps was until 10 min ago but hello friend. Lets hope and pray this is the start of a leadership that NASCAR can rely on.

Steve Phelps has always struck me as sharp and capable. He doesn't have a strong racing background per se, but I think he is smart enough to be aware of what he knows and doesn't know. He is personable and presents well, which wasn't Dewar's strength. NASCAR has been missing marketing acumen, which I hope Phelps can bring to the role.

Or I could just say at least it's not the other Steve that was elevated to President.

Phelps is right I believe, there are more. I have been posting many of them and some who are sponsoring are extending their original agreements.

This is the second time that we will be getting a race fan, instead of a bean counter, in an important position. It appears that NASCAR recognizes, and understands, what the real problems are. IMO when NASCAR gets the right people in position, they are going to re-visit all the changes made by Brian France. I don't have a shred of anything to support this, it's just a gut feeling.

If nothing else they will be on the job instead of drunk and stupid in the Hampton's

Steve needs to be able to say there are more sponsors coming in than are leaving for it to mean something positive.

I think what you are saying is fair because Phelps may be technically correct but in reality Nascar has lost a lot more with a smaller number of big sponsors leaving.

Huh didn't know we were both UVM alums

They will not.

People forget who the real power behind the throne is:

...
Johnson said he was called Wednesday night by International Speedway Corp. president Lesa France Kennedy about the change, which didn’t come as a shock.
...

Brian France was just the public face. Lesa was in more powerful positions in the organization for far longer while Brian was still playing around in marketing.

Nothing will change.

I am digging the euphemism "headwinds" that Phelps is using.

I think you can make a good case that Nascar policy has caused many fans in longstanding to leave but I don't blame them for being unable to attract new fans in meaningful numbers. I believe that has more to do with cultural shifts and changes than Nascar blunders.

yeah there are many reasons/excuses I believe. Nascar has made some mistakes, most businesses do, changing times and attitudes are a factor, on and on. Count the number of businesses that have gone broke in the same amount of time or have been bought out and dissolved, or phased out because of newer technology. A person can just about pick any reason that works for them and they do. Who knows what the future brings but Phelps speaking out like he has is way different than the closed mouth Nascar of old.

I compare NASCAR currently to where the NHL was after the lockout. It has improved immensely since, due in part to a complete change in the way the sport was played

That’s why I’m okay with somewhat of a restrictive plate for next year. If they can turn it into what Indy is at tracks like Texas where it’s all about picking up a slipstream the sport is going to improve. I think we can all agree that the aerodynamic advantage of being in the lead is a bad thing in racing, especially on a round track where you are constantly following a leaders line

I do not want pack racing like Daytona however, a little throttle control is very important
