Team Orders

Right on 66.....

So, Paul, you think the order was from Roush to let Mark by?

Wrong 66, they're paid to do what their car owner says.

So where does the sponsor and the team have a say in it?

Like I said already, most of the sponsors probably have a basic understanding of the sport and realize that team orders have always been and always will be a part of motorsports and don't cry about it.

Here's one way to answer that question.

How many people here know who sponsors the number 97 Ford?

How many people here know who sponsors the number 14 Pontiac? Or the number 89 Ford?

'Nuff said.

Roush Racing: No team orders at Rockingham
November 4, 2002

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (AP) -- There's no such thing as "team orders" for the Roush Racing crew, proven Sunday when Kurt Busch wouldn't give teammate Mark Martin anything to help Martin's bid for the Winston Cup championship.

Busch and Martin battled for most of the Pop Secret 400, appearing to be the only two cars capable of winning at North Carolina Speedway.

With Busch leading, there was debate over whether or not he should allow Martin to pass him and attempt to earn the five-point bonus for leading the most laps and race for the win.

The practice of team orders is sometimes used in Formula One racing and is heavily criticized. Martin admitted there was talk on the radio about it, but that the drivers were not involved.

"There was something said, but not between us," Martin said. "I can tell you one thing, when Kurt got ready to go, he blew me off."

Martin eventually passed Busch cleanly and led a race-high 144 laps to pick up the bonus. It pulled him within 87 points of Tony Stewart for the championship.

Busch led 105 laps and finished third at North Carolina Speedway, where Johnny Benson passed both of them to earn his first career victory.

Well that doesn't mean I have to agree with it. Letting your teamate back on the lead lap or letting them lead a lap is great, but letting your teamate win is not right and fair in my eyes. Thats my opinion and it won't be changed.

"There was something said, but not between us," Martin said.

Of course there was nothing between the drivers, they would have absolutely no say in the matter.

Ya know, it's not everybody involved doesn't know which side of the bread has the butter.:)

Plus, how would they say anything to one another? The radios don't go from driver to driver.

Can you just IMAGINE if they did though? :p

The drivers are just machines, huh? Of course they have a say in it - they determine what they do....

I agree with 66 - just because it goes on doesn't mean that I have to agree with it - I never will. I am not a big NFL fan, but last season didn't a QB take a dive to allow a defensive player to set some sack record? Was that right? I feel that you should have to earn it all - As 66 said, that is my opinion and won't be changed.

And Paul, I gotta hand it to you on this one. Being orange to the core, I thought you might fall on the other side of this particular fence. You never cease to amaze me...

Yeah, and Jack Roush says he doesn't cheat either......

I check this board a couple of times each day and very seldom actually say anything - now that I have gotten into a discussion - I have to ask ---

How do you folks get anything done ? I haven't accomplished a thing at work today thanks to this..... I gotta get back to work...

Who says we get anything done?

Why thank you...:D

Paul, I'm not trying to start something. I know it happens and will continue to do so. I just hate to say good teams finish lower when they had a car that could win. These people on the 97 team work just as hard as the 6 and deserve what they work for.

But DEI doesn't issue press releases saying, "We don't cheat!" either.......

why are you hanging at a racing board on company time?

and everybody wants to blame low productivity on us union guys.

geesh

Hey, at least we ain't talking about somebody saying feces any more...

What is there to stop Ted Turner from forming 20 teams, and letting all but one win, with the others wrecking potential winners?

Team orders suck and are not fair to the single car teams.

NASCAR rules.

What rules?

Are you saying NASCAR has a limit on how many teams an owner can have?

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. IMO Team orders are wrong. Letting someone get his lap back is wrong too, ESPECIALLY when it is someone from the same stable.

Why would you reckon they do it then? Because they don't know what they're doing?

Actually NASCAR does have a limit on many cars, or teams if you will, an individual can own. But the rule is so easily gotten around that it is irrelevent. The cars are simply "officialy owned" by someone else.

Interestingly, at Atlanta last week Jack Roush was talking about his entry into NASCAR many years ago. His expectation that was that within 10 years he would win at least 3 championships, and that was with one team. Now he has five, or will have, and still no crown. In his words; "At the rate I'm going I may have to run 43 teams to win that championship"

And that would be an OK tactic with some "race fans" around here.

With the pressure that exists on every individual teams crew, crew chief and driver to perform, both from sponsor and owner, I dont believe that we will ever see the type of team orders that were the order of the day in the F1 series.
I do think that courtesy amongst drivers, expecially teammates is not unusual and while not a very good strategy is it a common practice. Kurt knew that Mark needed every point he could get and whether told to or not made sure that those 5 for leading a lap were his for the taking. So What! You will never see it happen on the final lap, I would be willing to bet money on that!
Dale Jr said himself that he and Mikey talked about if their cars were as evenly matched at Daytona as they had been at Talledega that they would work it out between themselves, one could assume that meant that they had decided which would win beforehand but that may not have been the case. He may have simply meant, we are the ones behind the wheel and we will race for it. Steve Hmiel is not qualified to determine which one can win only the driver knows what his car can do come crunch time!

I notice that some here seem to be challenging others posters opinions. There's little point in that. Everyone is entitiled to their own opinion dont you think?

It's called an argument.

It's very civil, there is no name calling...let's not turn it into something it isn't.

It's fine the way it is.

All I know for sure is that when I win the lottery.... first thing I'm gonna do is buy new carpet for my double wide.

Get the possums outta the attic and put on a brand new roof with them good shingles.

Then extend the deck so that I have room to take my chicken chit boots off under cover when it is raining.

Lorddy Lorddy Lorddy. When Mark, and Roush use the same tactics that some others have used it becomes a major sin.If that were some others chasing the cup everything would be just wonderful in the bowtie racing world.
