This man can not stay away from controversy

I have a feeling Robby's in some trouble... hopefully there will be no penalty assessed... Schlesser is a big name in the Dakar Rally, 2 time winner, so maybe all of this will just blow past.... go figure when Robby finally does something awesome he's docked for something else

"Today Robby Gordon pushed several cars of the road. You can see the footage on Eurosport, where pushes the Toyota RAV4 #381 of AD Sport. The Toyota hit a rock and bended part of the suspension, which cost them 1 hour to repair. Gordon never used his Sentinel and latter claimed it was broken, which is impossible because it is checked everday before the start of the stage.

After the stage, AD Sport filled complaint with the organisation and they were not the only one. 4 other cars that were pushed off also complained and Gordon even drove into a motorbike! He was driving like a fool.

So expect Gordon to get a big time penalty for his eckless driving. This driving is not appreciated in the Dakar. Luckly nobody got injured today… "

Jutta says:

"I think both Schlesser and Gordon deserve a penalty - ignoring the Sentinel is definitely not what it’s intended for - it’s also there to make the rallye safer, which Robbie is certainly not when he keeps bumpin people off track - this is not NASCAR (have to admit though that I can understand those situations - I’d love to bump some people on normal roads somtimes lol, plus it did look quite funny on Eurosport last night)."

Dries says:

"They filled a complain by ASO yesterday evening, but the organisation has not taken a decision because they were very busy moving to Mauritania. AD Sport thinks they have a good case especially because the incident got filmed by the helicopter and was shown on French TV, Eurosport, … and because various other teams complained. Expect a decision this evening.

I really like Jutta, and Robby has always had a soft spot for Jutta and helps her everytime she needs help with her car...

Ok What is a "tracker"?

I'd like to get into whatever it is you are doing .. All I know is OLN at 2:00 central.. CAre to sahre?
Betsy:confused:

Now THAT'S the Robby we all know so well!! It was only a matter of time wasn't it?
Betsy:rolleyes:

For all who want to follow

Betsy:confused:

add the www's and the http:'s, i dont have enough posts to be able to post links correctly

tracking2007.dakar.com/ASO/index_us.html
you can track robby here when he is racing, its a horrible site that takes forever to reload, but if you click virtual ranking you can see whos in the lead and by how much. Robby's number is 320, other americans are chris blais, bike 009 and Mark Miller 305...Robby's MAN truck is 556. Tracking Mark Miller is usually helps judge where Robby should be.

dakar.com/2007/DAK/LIVE/us/600/r7_5-parcours.html
tells you what time the stage is starting and information about the stage so you can track it. GMT is 6 hours ahead of central time i believe.

eurosport.com/rallyraid/dakar/2007/
the best site that i know for current information... breaking news, videos and its own version of "tracking" by updates, no little cars to follow though. if you click under the results box and "today" you can see new information come up during the race... the page reloads itself when new information arrives, which is usually ever 10 minutes of the race atleast.

and of course robbygordon.com and youtube.com/rgm7[/url] for video and picture updates.

Update: No Penalties Given out

Robby Gordon (USA – Hummer – Winner)

"I really went flat out today. I’m delighted with my day. The car was perfect. A year ago, on the same special stage, we lost 20 minutes, but this year we won. I was a bit worried about the petrol level so I slowed down at the end… At one moment, we were battling with Schlesser in the dunes, but I let him go. He was driving faster than us. As regards the general rankings, we had problems with bad petrol in Morocco. On the Dakar, that can become costly in no time. As for yesterday, I got a warning for how I overtook. I was pushing the vehicles in front of me. Back home, that’s what we do in the Bajas, because we don’t have an overtaking warning system. But it’s true that when you set off in 71st position, like I did yesterday, you really see the difference between the professionals and amateurs. Whilst some people slow down, I throw it into sixth gear. Today, when I overtook, I was careful to take a wide berth on one side or the other."

Atleast it wasnt for throwing rollbar padding out in the dunes :p

No Penalties Given out

Ah well, there is always tomorrow! Looks like the real Robby is standing up.
Betsy:rolleyes:

Stage 7:
Finished 13th and now up to 16th overall...
Everyone had trouble today, including Robby. My Tracker showed him stopped for quite awhile and then he got off course for some reason. Massive sand storms and harsh weather caused the Stage to be shortened...

Neither Robby or Andy has ever done good in this stage, so Im pleased overall that they finished in the top 15 having dealt with problems throughout the course. Last year Andy was sent to the hospital during this stage for injuries after wrecking his bike.

Best update of the night.. or well most rediculous update of the night:

"Outburst of anger for Sousa..."
Nr 313 SOUSA/SCHULZ - VOLKSWAGEN, SUPER PRODUCTION
After losing long and precious minutes stuck in a sand dune, Portuguese driver Carlos Sousa, mad at his copilot Andreas Schulz, left without him. The German copilot has now been looking for his driver and car for 45 minutes."

I want to know what that penalty is going to look like! Hopefully Robby doesnt get any ideas from it and Andy just stays in the vehicle at all times.

Robby finished 8th in todays stage, and is now 10th overall!!
thDSC01774.jpg
Give em heck Robby!!

I was following tracker this morning, looks like Robby finished 9th today, and moves up to 8th Overall. Two of the front runners had trouble today. Hopefully Robby got his problems behind him, and the guys that haven't had trouble yet probably will, just a matter how serious will theirs be?

I'm having a lot of trouble getting the site to give up much. I did see that Robby is the only vehicle listed under "open".. So no matter what he has to win his class.
Doesn't it stand reasonably that his "open" car should be better than the "stock" classes? Just asking, because I am not so sure.
I have been watching the 30 minutes a day on versus.. There sure is a lot of sand on seemingly every leg of that race.
Betsy;)

you'd think so seeing he can have certain modifications but alot of the stock class vehicle teams, i.e. VW, has a Budget around 100 million, while RG is trying to build a team off of about 2 million. I still say the monster needs to go on a diet and loose some pounds so it can be more versitle.
He's now become the only American who has built his own race vehicle and actually won with it instead of just the first american to win multiple stages.

Here's to 8th place! his goal was a top 10 and now he's solidly locked into it as long as he has no more troubles. now its time to set eyes on more stage wins and 5th overall (which he will need an act of god or some serious bad luck for the front runners seeing its a 4 hour difference)

2:00 pm TV

I watched and watched and no Robby on the screen.. Lots of time spent on the bikes and on the small cars but no Robby.. :p It is understandable considering the primary audience is Europe and not the US. Eighth ain't so bad ... can we wish hard luck on the front runners so he can get a shot at the title?
Betsy:cool:

ya never know! i can see a 7 car pileup in the future :) usually 1 top person falls out every stage, today it was Sainz, he was in 4th overall.. he hasnt withdrawn yet but he's pretty much done in for. lets just keep our fingers crossed that Robby wont be one of those to withdrawl.

on a side note... Just informed by Andy Grider that Robby was given a letter from the rule makers saying that he can only run the Hummer for 3 years. They wanted to outlaw the Hummer from the begining but couldnt get it passed soon enough. So now he's having to start from scratch again next year.... so i wonder what's next for him to build.. since he's in a Ford now, will be be a ranger? F-150? I dont like the 'Rabbits' and rather him stay American Built but VW's have great backing.. and Mitzu's seem to be the ones to beat.

If you look back, the lead was over 6 hours the day before yesterday , but the 2 front runners had serious problems and Robby gained 2 hours. The guys up front now have not had their problems yet. If they do, Robby could move way up.

Had a top 5 going until the last 50k of the special. Something went wrong, not sure what it was, probably a puncture or maybe he rolled it, but for some reason he had to stop and then proceeded extremely slowly to the finish.
Still 8th overall, Sousa, the racer in 7th place had transmission problems and had to limp his car to the finish with only 2wd. Dont want to wish bad luck on anyone but maybe they wont be able to get it fixed and RG will move on up. ;)

I hope Robby will win another stage for Benny, he always respected and stuck up for Robby and followed him in all his adventures.

Reminder: No stage special tomorrow

The route of Dakar Rally has been changed because of security threats. Today's stage was supposed to be to Timbuktu and tomorrow's was supposed to go back but they decided just to make stage 10 a wrap around stage and now stage 11 has been scrapped after kidnapping threats from Algrerian rebel groups. French authorities were warned that racers were at risk of being kidknapped or worse by Algerian rebel groups if they crossed into Mali, and have now decided to eliminate the stages altogether.

I had a student from Mali once. Nice kid, kind of spoiled, of course, he wasn't a rebel, he was some rich guy's son.

Robby

was shown at length on the 6:00 versus. They said he only had a 2-wheel drive.. prolly meaning he had broken his front drive somehow. He got himself into some real soft sand...along with orher racecars. He was in there for what seemed like hours moving a few feet at a time and shoveling somemore..
It was a real mess out there today the wind was blowing sand everywhere.
Betsy:(

Stage 9 Report: Tichit to Nema

Without the benefit of assistance from his team, Robby Gordon began the ninth stage in the 2007 Dakar Rally from the 10th starting position. The ninth stage left the sand dunes and got onto the hard pack which is well suited for the Monster Hummer. By days ends Gordon arrived at the bivouac in 11th place in the car category - 33:09 back of eventual stage winner Jean-Louis Schlesser. The result allowed the Monster Hummer to move to eighth in the overall classification.

Robby Gordon’s quotes following stage nine
“We had a really good run going. We ran with the Mitsubishis for about 200 km when we lost the rear tire inflation system. It broke off the air nozzle which resulted in a flat rear tire. We lost about 10 minutes changing that tire and after about another 100 km we got another flat on the rear. Our second spare is a light weight tire which can only go on the front so essentially we had to put the front tire on the rear and the lighter spare on the front. That cost us some additional time. Unfortunately with the mini spare we can’t run wide open so that impeded us as well. “

“We were stretching the fuel window so again like stage eight we had to be conservative with the throttle. Overall we finished 11th which is a very good result considering the troubles we had. It also moved us up to eighth in the overall standings. That’s a result that I’m happy with. There are over 1100 km of racing left and obviously some of the other teams are having trouble. We have had our share of problems and we are still in this game – we just have to survive these upcoming stages. Tomorrow we are going to try win the special. I think the special is especially well suited to the Hummer so the 10th stage might be Hummer time.”

I gotta wonder ... if he's got 2 H1s as support ... why waste the effort with a H3. It's a pile of crap by comparison.

I agree... i hate the H3's... hummers are meant to be big right? but...

if you mean race an H1, its way too big. the H3 is actually too big IMHO for a race.... that baby needs to loose about 500 pounds... the H1 couldnt maneuver like it should to win a stage, especially stages 1-3, it would be a killer in the silt and powder, being destined to sink because of its weight and length. also the H1 would be a killer on gas milage, which is what cost robby 30 minutes on today stage... the H3 he drives now doesnt even fit the specs of what dakar wants, thats why hes classified as an "open" class.. it allows the car to have the specs of a baja raced truck/buggy.

I just want him to finish this thing and bring a top 10 home to the US... I wish his MAN truck faired the same as he's been doing. Glad they decided to opt out on tomorrows stage for the safety of the racers and teams. I have a feeling the Americans would be the ones theyd go after cause we arent like very much over there. Both Robby and his dad, Baja Bob, have both been shot at a few times while racing in other countries... so sad!

Something did make me laugh pretty hard today, someone on the speed tv message boards said that qualifying for a NASCAR race is probably harder than the whole Dakar race... woah, this person forgot their smart pill this morning.

Yes! That person should have seen Robby (the driver) out there today with a shovel in his hands throwing sand every whichaway.. getting his own ride unstuck.

Dakar Rally Officials Run Stage 10 Anyway * Different Course
The Dakar Rally organisers have decided to cancel the two Néma-Timbuktu and Timbuktu-Néma stages, scheduled for the 16th and 17th of January, after the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against running the 10th and 11th stages. In spite of the extensive surveillance and the guarantees provided by the Mali authorities, this precautionary measure is vital in safeguarding the security of the competitors. After the sporting teams of the rally considered an alternative solution, a loop stage from Néma to Néma, including a timed sector of 376 kilometres, will now be run on the 16th of January. The following day, the competitors will enjoy half a rest day, and will then take to the road for a liaison stage of approximately 280 km towards Ayoun-el-Atrous in Mauritania, from where the next start of the rally will start on 18 January, heading for Kayes in Mali. ...Daily Headlines
Yesterday it was announced that the 10th and 11th stage would be eliminated but Dakar Rally officials apparently have decided to run stage 10 in a big loop from Nema to Nema. Official did cancel the original route but ran a big circle (called a loop Stage) from where they started.

Stage 10 Report: Nema to Nema

The 366 km special loop from Nema to Nema was perfect terrain for the Monster Energy Hummer. The big bumps and single tack played perfectly to the Hummer’s impressive suspension package and that showed as the Hummer, which began the stage in the 11th starting position, cleared the first check point in the lead. A pinched fuel system breather hose ruined the day when the Hummer H3 was never completely fueled up due to a faulty reading. Gordon and navigator Andy Grider ran out of fuel towards the end of the stage and managed a 23rd place finish, yet managed to maintain their eight place ranking in the overall classification.

Robby Gordon’s quotes following stage 10
“We really had a great run going. The track was perfect for the Hummer and we really felt like we should have won the special. It seems like fuel issues have been the story of our Dakar. First we got bad fuel in the early stages and then yesterday a faulty reading on the fuel meter once again ruined a stage for us. It’s really a shame because we came to Dakar believing we could win this race and the way we have run I really think we could have. Overall our preparation has been really good and our team this year is gaining experience that I’m sure will pay off in the future. Our goal is going to be to try to finish this thing on as many high notes as possible. There are four stages left and we are going to try win them all."

Stage 12

I think a flat caused him some problems today...it better not be another gas problem! poor hummer only gets 3.5 mpg. wont find out for sure what happened until he reaches the bivouac. He was running 2nd at CP2, which means he lost around 15 minutes in the last 110km.

13th... still 8th overall.... 3 stages left, 1 win has to be for Robby and Andy.... last stage win the bet was that Andy had to shave his Gotee, wonder who has to shave what the next win? ;) he starts 13th tomorrow, he won from 15th last time. lets take one for the long road home! :beerbang:

theres a good interview to show the great camaradarie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMkEWuI5TKw

not looking forward to tomorrows stage... it goes into town, where Robby tends to get caught for speeding. if he looses 24 minutes, he'll end up falling to 9th to Sainz who won todays stage. unless something goes completely wrong and they loose an hour, they're bringing home a top 10! the last stage is just a parade stage, theres really not any real racing in it and only lasts around 20 minutes.
he sounds extremely tired on his last video update but he's still got it in him stating "If this is the toughest race in the world I want to win it"

I do not understand how the hummer which at times looks to be the best vehicle in the race can be that far away from the leaders. Just thinking about the hummer and the offroad experience that put her together one would think it MUST be the best ride in the dakkar..
But the hondas mitsus and other small cars are dominating the race. ? why?
Betsy

they have for the past few years./ If you're not so heavey, you don't sink as far or as quick, they also get great milage

Theres something about seeing Robby and Andy riding in one of these across the desert makes me laugh alittle! but no joke the bug class is one of the coolest class in baja racing, those boys are true racers.
resized_deerace.jpg.w300h200.jpg

Andy and robby finished 5th in todays stage, still holding onto the 8th place finish... looks like we are bringing home 8th place! Chris Blais from US is bringing home a podium on bikes for the US also. after tomorrows stage, what does one do at 4am... i think im going to need therapy for dakar rally withdrawls.

Another motorcyle rider died this morning, Eric Aubijoux who was in 19th place overall passed away from a cardiac arrest right after finishing this mornings special...
