The Daytona 500: no longer "The Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing"?

just wait until the season is over and no racing, then Feb rolls in and Daytona is grand again

In my opinion they spend way too much time in one place. Nearly 3 weeks.

By the end of speedweeks I get pretty bored.

A restrictor plate race should absolutely not be the finale.

Competition wise, yes. However, considering how much buzz Talladega has created over the past week in conjunction with it being the last race before the Eliminator Round, I don't really see it going anywhere. Brain France must be super moist reading and hearing all the buzz that last week post-race activity and Talladega must have created.

The biggest race of the year is Martinsville, with Darlington a close second.

That has nothing to do with the Chase, Homestead, Daytona, or Atlanta the former finale. I just like the character of my two favorite tracks best and that makes them the best and biggest deal to me.

Really hard to give a direct answer, the body of work is huge. It kind of like your local track were a big 200 lapper or something like it is expected to be best event of the year, but on some random summer night a regular weekend program produces the best actual race of the year. I am probably getting away from the topic.

The 600 is a big deal to me, just the whole deal, the 600, the 500, Monoco, overload that is biggest race day of the year imo.

Imo your stalker's self aggrandizing and self appointed arrogance doesn't deserve the attention or an answer.
I enjoy your posting and humor, it would be a shame imo for someone that routinely gets off on insulting others to slow you dow

I always look forward to reading your comments.
Thanks for the kind words Greg, I enjoy your posts as well.

I try not to take myself too awfully serious in here. :)

Maybe the season should begin and end with Daytona? Remove the second Talladega race, replace it with a short track or a dirt track and bob's your uncle.
I like the idea of daytona first and last. Don't remove a dega date, pull some of the snooze fest 1.5-2.0 mile tracks for more short tracks

tickets for tha homestead " game 7 " bandwagon still available !
ya'll better sign up ........afore they sell out ! ha!

I don't see it happening. The Firecracker 400 itself holds a special place in NASCAR lore.

Not sure some people realize the 500 is considered the super bowl of racing because so many people watch it, and because its the most prestigious race.. like how the super bowl is very prestigious .... not because its actually like the super bowl

Daytona is welcomed in February. Whatever Sprint calls their show. The qualifying races. The lower tier stuff prior to the cup race. It's all good to see after the lay off. But when one avoids the hype and boils the supporting and big event on the track down to basics, it's just plate racing.

You know what I miss? Races that doesn't have sponsors name in them. Like the Southern 500, or the Firecracker 400, now it's all LadyTampons 400 or the Diet Soda that won't really help you lose weight 500.
I made my NASCAR computer calendar with names based on the city and distance or a familiar name like the Brickyard 400. Every time I hear a race referenced by the sponsor name I have to figure out what track it is - the track name/location means something to me.

Id love to see a race at Bristol. Would like to see a race at every track. But Bristol would probably be the one id be looking forward to the most.

On the topic, I think Homestead (or just the last race wherever it may change to if it does) should be a much bigger thing than it is now. Especially now that there is a chase. Maybe in the past it just wasn't a big deal cause the champion was almost guaranteed before the race started (if they were far enough ahead). Now it is completely open and the last race will decide the champion

To me, the Daytona 500 is special because it's the first race after the off season. I probably get more excited for the Bud Shootout than the Daytona 500.

The Super Bowl's for all the marbles. Daytona in February is the first points paying race.
That, and about 100 million more people watched the Super Bowl than the Daytona 500.

The Daytona 500 is more like opening day than the Super Bowl, with the Shootout, Duels, etc. being like NASCAR preseason.

If you didn't C&P that then you have a helluva lot more time on your hands than I do. :D

Watkins Glen the new York city???? The Glen is about as country as you can get

Its in New York and things go fast you come up with 39 things lol:p

Yea I know. Whenever I tell people I am from NY, they automatically think the city (I live in Florida now). Watkins Glen is a tiny little old town though with a lot of corn fields all around and if your looking for a wine tour, Watkins Glen is a great place for it. A lot of waterfalls in the area also.

I've been to the area, just when I was small my great grandmother was from Rochester.

I once met someone who was vacationing in Niagara Falls and mentioned that they were hoping to stop by NYC while they were there. I didn't have the heart to tell them that they were quite a distance away.

wherever it is or what it is called, it's the last race of the season, and that sucks in my world. Long dry spell until February
The Super Bowl's for all the marbles. Daytona in February is the first points paying race.

super bowl is a football game, the pre-show half time and commercials are usually more interesting. Daytona is a car race to a non fan, but to a Nascar fan, the end of a long drought from racing. To some of us it is a second race after the Daytona 24, another big race, but it is for the Tudor series.

A restrictor plate race should absolutely not be the finale.
Heck, I don't think a plate race belongs in the Chase. Hell, I don't think they belong on the schedule at all.

As to 'The Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing', that was a creation of the CBS marketing department.

What else can I dump on this afternoon?

I like it better when it's called The Great American Race. Then again, the name alone stands for itself.

No they bought the name from the cross country antique car rally. :)

ta lotsa racers all over tha usa.........speedweek is 1st races of yr too......at smyrna / volusia tracks .

Yeah and that name has been changed from the Great American Race to just the Great Race now..nothing is sacred.

The event was known as the "Great American Race" up to the mid-1990s and for the 25th Anniversary race in 2007. Although the name "Great American Race" has been applied to the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500, the events are not affiliated. Both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Daytona International Speedway have served as the finish line of the Great Race.

The only reason they call it the Superbowl of Racing is to show the stick and ballers what an important race it is. The Daytona 500 will never lose its status. As far as the last race of the year, I was quite satisfied with Atlanta all those years.

I think the Indy 500 is the indycar superbowl , and it's not at the end of the season either .
