Joie Chitwood III - President of Daytona International Speedway was on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio talking about NASCAR possibly breaking up the two car drafts @ Daytona. There's talk of setting up a test in January to modify the cars to prevent this style of racing. Audio Link

this would be great if they don't make things worse in the process.

I wonder if the change is due to the speeds that they're now obtaining in these two-car drafts or is it some of the outcry from fans?

Whatever the outcome, there will still be people complaining about it.

Guess they didn't like my solution of making them apply velcro to their bumpers, I always thought that would end the 2 car drafts as well as the 3 and 4 also,:owquitit::sarcasm:

I agree. Most of the drivers feel that the 2 car draft puts skill before luck, unlike the old 2 locomotives racing each other until they wreck style. I can't see team owners wanting to go back to bringing throw away cars to the super speedways, or drivers missing the days when a T-bone to their door was more likely.

Pemberton was on the Hub last night, and he said the 2 car draft will develop on it's own. I think it's more likely NASCAR will try something to make a 4 car draft work, rather than ending the 2 car draft.

At the start of the season, in another forum, I predicted we would start seeing new techniques to break up 2 cars, like the side draft or planting yourself in front of 2 hooked up cars. That's what we are seeing now, and I think it's great to watch all the strategy play out.

I'm still waiting for the first team to apply teflon strips on their bumpers. Perhaps Biffle in the 16 will get some Teflon love from 3M.

Good are these speeds ran anywhere else? If so and I think they do then I would say it is NOT SPEED

Find race speeds ATLANTA and Chorlette lets say

Atlanta practice speeds were below 190 this year. link

Charlotte's were in the mid 180's. link

You can look up the rest for yourself if you find it that important. The thread is about the 2-car draft, not the speeds at other tracks. Daytona/Talladega are notorious for their sustained speed. I don't think that fact escapes you. It's the whole reason behind the restrictor plate to begin with.

ATL
September 2010 Pole Sitter: #11-Denny Hamlin, 187.380mph, finished 43rd

March 2010 Pole Sitter: #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr., 192.761, finished 15th
So Race Speeds Must Be Close To 199 that tells me this is NOT ABOUT SPEED
If so why not have plates at ATL my only point And there are several others at 199 race speed

I thought these were ALL average speed for a lap, not TOP speed. I thought the 2 car draft TOP speed is hitting over 200mph on straights.

Thats top speed the one for Daytona is average speed, you might hit 205 at California but you don't keep it up at Daytona its constantly at that.

I'm guessing that we could go round and round on this all day. Race speeds, not pole speeds. They're two completely different things. Besides, we are talking about my opinion and your opinion. It is my opinion that they would want to stop it because of the sustained race speeds that they are now running on the restrictor plate tracks. I also think that it's because of the negative opinion by some fans. You don't agree and that's fine.

You will never see 200 plus pole speed again
But why is it that 200mph at plate tracks are more dangerous than 200mph at California

All I am saying is that IMO breaking up the two car pack is not about speeds

Maybe fan opinion does play a part but unlike the car of yesteryear the COT has a tendency to fly when turned. Regardless of the "no liability" clause printed on the ticket if a car ends up in the stands na$car is going to be on the hook for untold millions.

It's not uncommon for driver to hit over 200 before going into turn 1 at California and other long intermediate tracks.

210+ mph at the end of the Long Pond Straightaway...

I have never liked plate races. They are exciting but it's not really racing, IMO.

I think that GoodYear should supply tires with bowling ball-hard rubber, and that NASCAR should reduce downforce on the cars, forcing drivers to lift off the throttle going into the turns. Then the driver with the best handling car or the biggest huevos would win. (sorry, Danica)

I wonder what will be done as NASCAR transitions to fuel injection for 2012. There will still be restrictors on the air intake, I am sure.

Yes they already came out and said that there will still be restrictor plates.

Since huevos is Spanish for eggs, not sure why you're apologizing to Danica. I mean, after all, she would be the only one with the potential to actually have some. :D:D

NA$CAR want to stop the 2 car draft, well use the actually body style of the cars.

There would be no way to have a 2 car draft with these cars rear bumpers.

I can't believe that the paste on body style had me thinking Carl was actually driving a Fusion.

“The 1 just drove into the side of me and turned me into the apron,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “And I had it saved and he came on and got him another shot. He brought the KO punch the second time and spun us around.”

The end result was Earnhardt having another tough race in the two-car restrictor-plate drafting phenomenon, one he’s made it clear he’s not been a fan of since its inception.

“It was a foolish freakin’ race,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “I don’t know what to tell you. … We had a caution at the end and we’re all plate racing.

“We’re just going to all run into each other. That’s how it’s going to go. The guy in front, he’s just trying to get on out there and the rest of us are going to crash into each other.”

With one more restrictor-plate race left on the schedule when the Sprint Cup Series visits Talladega in October, it’s a safe bet Earnhardt won’t change his view of the two-car drafting.

I don’t like this kind of racing,” said Earnhardt Jr. to the assembled media after Saturday night’s race. "You guys need to get your own freakin’ opinions and write what y’all think about it because I think it’s pretty damn close to mine. I’m going to stop putting my damn foot in my mouth with y’all and getting my ass in trouble. Y’all write what y’all think."

Make National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing racecars at least LOOK LIKE the stock model cars? What are you smokin', bro? Why should NASCAR to a thing like that?
