Joie Chitwood III - President of Daytona International Speedway was on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio talking about NASCAR possibly breaking up the two car drafts @ Daytona. There's talk of setting up a test in January to modify the cars to prevent this style of racing. Audio Link

Guess they didn't like my solution of making them apply velcro to their bumpers, I always thought that would end the 2 car drafts as well as the 3 and 4 also,

I agree. Most of the drivers feel that the 2 car draft puts skill before luck, unlike the old 2 locomotives racing each other until they wreck style. I can't see team owners wanting to go back to bringing throw away cars to the super speedways, or drivers missing the days when a T-bone to their door was more likely.

Pemberton was on the Hub last night, and he said the 2 car draft will develop on it's own. I think it's more likely NASCAR will try something to make a 4 car draft work, rather than ending the 2 car draft.

At the start of the season, in another forum, I predicted we would start seeing new techniques to break up 2 cars, like the side draft or planting yourself in front of 2 hooked up cars. That's what we are seeing now, and I think it's great to watch all the strategy play out.

I'm still waiting for the first team to apply teflon strips on their bumpers. Perhaps Biffle in the 16 will get some Teflon love from 3M.

I don't think that fact escapes you. It's the whole reason behind the restrictor plate to begin with.

I thought these were ALL average speed for a lap, not TOP speed. I thought the 2 car draft TOP speed is hitting over 200mph on straights.

Thats top speed the one for Daytona is average speed, you might hit 205 at California but you don't keep it up at Daytona its constantly at that.

It is my opinion that they would want to stop it because of the sustained race speeds that they are now running on the restrictor plate tracks. I also think that it's because of the negative opinion by some fans. You don't agree and that's fine.

You will never see 200 plus pole speed again
But why is it that 200mph at plate tracks are more dangerous than 200mph at California

All I am saying is that IMO breaking up the two car pack is not about speeds

Maybe fan opinion does play a part but unlike the car of yesteryear the COT has a tendency to fly when turned. Regardless of the "no liability" clause printed on the ticket if a car ends up in the stands na$car is going to be on the hook for untold millions.

I have never liked plate races. They are exciting but it's not really racing, IMO.

I think that GoodYear should supply tires with bowling ball-hard rubber, and that NASCAR should reduce downforce on the cars, forcing drivers to lift off the throttle going into the turns. Then the driver with the best handling car or the biggest huevos would win. (sorry, Danica)

I wonder what will be done as NASCAR transitions to fuel injection for 2012. There will still be restrictors on the air intake, I am sure.
