Nice piece from Kelly Crandall. Carson is obviously really talented - he's fast in everything and he's just going to have to work out the rest.

Two guys racing their butts off, Hocevar was blocking the hell out of Riggs like he should, Riggs lost the front end, Hocevar saved it and gave Riggs the nah nah I beat you finger. That's the way I saw it. Both of them are good young drivers.

Yeah, not too much to make of it - heat of the moment thing. The middle finger did seem in poor taste but not that big of a deal.

To the part about him "not needing to say the right thing", I think she's right but also it's okay if that's who he wants to be. He seems like a pretty likable guy off the track, he's already doing a lot of media and even in the booth. For a 22 year old, he's got a more public face than many of them and if he wants to say the right thing because that's his nature, that's fine too.

The most important thing, imo is that he has the speed and talent to be one of the best.
He is immature and will wreck competitors. He is going to keep pissing off a lot of people for a while.

But I believe he will overcome those flaws and truly become one of the best. There is so much to gain by just becoming more mature. Hopefully, it happens while he is still young with enough time to reap the rewards.

More Yada yada.... I think it is harder to find or teach someone the speed than it is to find or teach the maturity. That is why I think he will become one the best drivers of his generation.

I was sorely disappointed Legacy didn't bother to sign him when they had the chance. He is a bit rough. But I'd rather calm down a driver than try to fire one up that doesn't have that in him.

I don't know if Hocevar had any say on where he would go, but picking Spire over Legacy I think was a better choice. Spire is affiliated with Hendrick.

He's been fast at every level of motorsports I've seen him at and I've also seen him wrecking people at every level of motorsports I've seen him at. My general concern is that he's never had to learn how much tearing equipment up costs and for him to be in Cup or Xfinity long enough to learn and mature as a driver, he's likely to tear up a lot more stuff for many more years. He's unlikely then to ever make that transition since, well, he doesn't have to.

It seems to me that his situation to change dramatically would require him to be hired on at a top tier Chevy team (since Ford and Toyota have their own driver pipelines). That means Hendrick and arguably Trackhouse. I don't see either having a seat for Hocevar anytime soon. He'll have to hang on for a good 4-5-6 years IMO before he has a chance at a bigger break, and by then, I'm guessing other prospects will have arrived.

I did a lot of dumb stuff at 22 as well

Carson Hocevar has been relatively clean all season long. I actually think he's ahead of schedule when it comes to maturity. His aggressiveness is what makes him so interesting and almost won him a race early in the season. I think people confuse aggressiveness with maturity for some reason. I don't think Hocevar has done anything wrong, and you can see when he works as a pit reporter how smart he is.

Ernie Irvin crashed a lot when he came to Cup. That's how he got the nickname "Swervin' Irvin". He settled down and won a bunch of races. I don't think Hocevar is as bad as Irvin was. But I do think he will win races and start soon (see my bold prediction).

Clean all season? Are you watching a different season than everyone else?

I've watched all the Cup races, and Hocevar seems to stay out of trouble most of the time. He's obviously had a couple run-ins, but nothing out of the ordinary, in my opinion.

Had 2 for car trouble and one wreck. Seems pretty clean on paper anyway.

He had a "couple run-ins" in just one lap at Atlanta and probably at least a bakers dozen by the end of the day.
Got nothing against him, he just needs to settle down...a lot.

He finished 2nd that race his highest finish I believe. That was bound to ruffle a few feathers.

I like the kid as you can see he has speed but he just needs to put things together. Of course I thought the Gibbs boy would would have won by now so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
