Can you imagine the comments if this was today's qualifying speeds? ;)

Much slower but just imagine racing back then with the primitive tires and technology.

No Hans, no window nets, primitive seats with limited support for crashes. If they had the fire proof fuel cells they had to be in their infancy in terms of development at the time. I think they only started getting serious about the fuel cells after the Fireball Robert's tragedy in 1964.

Talented people but based on the resources there was probably a lot of home made shade tree engineering going on as well with a lot more safety compromises involved.
The high attrition and speed limitations probably prevented and caused some deaths as well.

Now imagine how long it took to run 500 miles at that speed.
.
Had to have some tough rugged pioneer fans.
Cause the man didn't even have a subway sandwhich back in the day.
All he had was his cans of Vienna sausage and maybe some crackers to hold it along with the afterbirth caked oils to go with the raw goods

The curiosity got the better of me

Time of race: 4:47:30
Average speed: 104.348 mph
Pole speed: 115.988 mph
Margin of Victory: 4 laps

Winner Fred Lorenzen led 320 laps and won $14, 550
Richard Petty led 180 laps before a blown engine and finished 28th
Between the two there were 20 lead changes.

I remember the pole speed for an Atlanta race in the late 70's was barely over 160 MPH.
