The Thermal Club 2025 IndyCar Grand Prix

I'm trying to remember the last time an IndyCar race was scheduled directly opposite a Cup race.

I'm also trying to figure out which booth crew is more likely to spoil the results of the other race.

But mostly I'm concerned that the local Fox affiliate has decided to show something else instead of IndyCar, rending my other issues moot.

NBC used to do that all the time, especially in the second half of the year.

Unless there's a long red flag IndyCar should be over earlier than Cup, so the cup crew will probably spoil the result.

Yeah, that's the theory I'm working on. I'll probably watch this one live (assuming the affiliates don't override it) and DVR the Cup race. I'll pay attention when I watch the Cup race to see if they do spoil it. Maybe they won't make a habit of it.

Long Beach/Bristol

Gateway/Mexico City

Road America/Pocono

Mid-Ohio/Chicago

Toronto/Dover

Laguna Seca/Brickyard

Portland/Watkins Glen

Will all have significant overlap if they run as scheduled.

I will always watch Indycar live and record Cup if they run at the same time. Indycar is my favorite and Cup will have way more wasted time running commercials, yellow flag laps and stages. I can probably speed through those things and watch the Cup race in the same time frame as the Indycar race.

btw, I really like this Thermal Club track. Don't know why but I do.

McLaren sweep the front row, with Pato getting his first pole since Mid-Ohio ‘22. All Penskes were eliminated in the first round for the first time since Portland ‘21.

Long Beach and Bristol are the only pair left that are both on Fox networks. After that, Cup races are on other networks. Hopefully those other sources won't be as prone to spoiling races that are on Fox.

What do you guys think of Buxton and the overall broadcast? I'm still trying to decide. It's very technical and serious, which is good, but it's lacking something. Maybe chemistry and polish, which could come later.

I didn't see last year's race here. So far this feels like an F1 race, and I don’t mean that in the nicest possible way.
It’s much better than last year’s event. I think it’s actually a pretty racey track, and the tire strategies are interesting. The top three just seem to be that much better than everyone else.

I think it’s pretty positive so far, although it does seem to be lacking a little something. Buxton hasn't done PxP in maybe a decade or so since his GP2 commentating days, and has mostly worked the pits and paddock presenter roles since. I think he has a lot of ability to grow into it though. And I’m very glad they kept T-Bell and Hinch together. Bell seems a bit more composed so far this year while still being able to keep things fun.

It got better after I said something, so maybe they got worried?

Regardless, it's moot now. I've switched to something else for the moment so I won't have my Cup recording spoiled. I guess I decide whether to check back occasionally or just start the Cup recording.

Now that we're back......I want to know how Indycar makes any money at this race. There aren't a bunch of grandstands full of fans. I think I saw one small one.

Thermal is a private club. It has minimal facilities for spectators. I assume the club compensates IndyCar somehow.

IndyCar already got the sanctioning fee from the Club. The Club opened up 5,000 general admission passes for this event, a lot more than for last year’s edition. Enough to cover the fee and all associated expenses? Not my business, but something tells me they’ll be okay either way.

Lundgaard is probably gonna have to settle for the bottom step on the podium, but McLaren should be very happy they finally seem to have found an equal to Pato for the 7 car.
