In 1971 RJ Reynolds became the series sponsor for NASCAR's top diviion. They established a point fund which has been in cintinuous existence since then. This year that guaranteed point fund is worth some 10 million dollars with the points leaders share a cool 3 mil.

How much ya reckon the total of that first points fund was?

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say $10000. Am I anywhere close HS?

I was gonna say half of that but I figured that would be a little too small even for 1971.

The original fund was $100,000 or 1% of todays total.

The winners share was around 15, 000 or one half a percent ot todays.

And that's on top of what ever the earnings were for the year for winning the individual races......not a bad "bonus" for a job well done.:) Even at 1971 dollars!!

I've often heard people say things like the total money for a champ in say the early sixtys didn't even amount to the winners pay for a single win nowadays.
