this is crazy!

he might have been telling him that but in short track racing a person or flag men taps their back with either there flag or their hand and points at you
WELL NOW, where do they do that ???
I started stock car and midget races for several years. Of course this was on the east coast so it might be different where you live. And ya gotta understand, it was years ago. Most people find this hard to believe, but I mean I used to walk five miles one way to go to school, uphill, both ways, and my first job when I got home after school was to carry water from the neighbors well, two miles due west, then milk the cow.
But times have changed, and I understand that. Now they have school busses and indoor plumbing.
Just to give you a further insight, in my younger yeears, it used to be when a person met someone and extended a finger it meant "hello". Coke was a soda drink, pot was something you put flowers in, and the local bar was called a joint, (shades of Merle Haggard) a place to stop and have a beer on the way home from work. All of these things have different meanings now. And at my age it is hard to keep up with the changes.

In my time, (said the old timer) I've attended or participated in short track races in more than one-half of these United States, and never seen a starter use the signal you mention. NOW, this doesn't mean to imply you are wrong, just sayin' the way things change I have a hard time keeping up with them.

Funny, but at the local short track up the road from my home, two weeks ago the track official patted his butt after a racing incident. He was telling the offending driver to go to the rear.
BTW, I tried to pat myelf on the back to signal, and it ain't easy. There's a lota people who are quite adept at pattin' themselves on thier own back. For me, it's tough.

And before I forget, I'll tell'em at the track next Saturday night they are doin' it wrong. Thanks for pointing it out.

i go to the race track in florida where i live i have been all over florida and they do it everywhere, yeah im not sure how it was then but i was just a desoto super speedway saturday night my best friend drive limited late models and they did it. the flag men do it theres like a flag man standing at the track entrance from the pits and one in the infield, they use their flag and tap there shoulder as signaling the back of the field

It's a matter of semantics. Just admit it that both of you are trying to so the same thing.

Let it go or go away.

97 Busch fan, I have seen starters take a rolled flag and point to the offender then point to the rear of the field or a specific area in the restart grid.
The hand to butt signal, eloquently displayed by Kurt Busch at Indy, is usually performed by the on-track officials.

This is the first I have heard of the "go to the rear of the field" done in the manner you describe. Since this took place in Florida, are you sure the starter wasn't just brushing away mosquitos ??
JUST JOKING !!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, reckon different tracks might do it different.

I think the key to interpreting Kurt's sign language in the Indy incident is to watch the other arm. While he is indicating his rear end with one, the other arm is pointing quite obviously towards the back of the field. What on earth would that gesture have to with a KMA message?

When I was racing, which was some years back, we did on occasion see a flagman who would tap his shoulder blade with the rolled flag. We always took this to mean we were suppose to be behind the car we were just ahead of. ...........Dem, no wonder those guys were pizzed at us all the time.......LOL

I'm sorry 97buschfan, but Kurt was not telling Spencer to "kiss his a$$" as you put it. If you read Whizzer's post, he told you exactly what that expression meant. It meant that Spencer should have to go to the back of the field.

I do get the impression that you are fairly young and haven't been watching Nascar for a great many years. I will however, offer you this piece of advice. When Whizzer and Hardscrabble make a post, please read it. Both of these fine gentlemen combined have more knowledge, and combined in years, it is nearly as many, if not more, than Nascar has actually been in existence. You could definitely learn quite a lot from these two individuals alone!

Maj, I believe Kurt was telling Jimmy to 'KMA' at the Brickyard also. The 'go to the rear of the field' was what NBC told the TV audience he was referring too.

I think all the tracks up here in WI roll the flag up & point to the back of the field. Don't think I ever recall seeing an official 'patting' his rear. But I'm a novice too, only been going to the local tracks a little over 11 years.
